    Acknowledgments

    We would like to express our appreciation to all of the volunteers who labored to make the First and Ten Mentoring Program a reality of hope for children. A special thanks to the first teams that assisted with launching of this initiative—to name a few, the initial students and staff in the Office of Student Affairs at Paul Quinn College, where Dr. Spencer served as Vice President, and the former administrators, teachers, and students of the Dallas Independent School District at DA Hulcy Middle School, whose enthusiasm and excitement gave us additional motivation to implement and continue the program. There were several former Dallas Cowboy and Buffalo Bill football team members, to whom we are appreciative for their support in mentoring students. Special thanks to Thomas Smith, a former Buffalo Bills team member, for hosting the first golf tournament.

    Sincere appreciation to the many students, parents, teachers, administrators, and service learning departments, and to the university/college, professional, business/entrepreneur/corporate, community, civic, and professional athletes that served as mentors, who were committed to serving youth. I would also like to thank the Kansas City, Kansas, School District #500, Newport News Public Schools, Isle of Wight and Brunswick County Public Schools in Virginia, Saint Paul Public Schools in Minnesota, and the partnership with Communities In Schools/ Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Inc., for the support of this program.

    Throughout the twenty-eight years, Center of the Future (formerly Believers Center of the Future Academy, Inc.) had many dedicated board members, volunteer staff, and mentors. We salute each of them.

    We also remember those who are deceased, including Mrs. Nerline McNeil Faber, an esteemed educator and civic leader; Mrs. Edith Neal, a renowned media center specialist; Mr. Joe C. Meriwether, former NBA basketball player;

    Mr. Jethro Pugh, former Dallas Cowboy; Mr. Joseph Parker, renowned college coach, Mr. Joseph Samuel, former college athlete, Mr. David Crocker, a distinguished golfer, businessman and Mr. Raymond Prince, a former college professor.

    To the present board of directors, who continue to be encouragers and enhancers for students, we thank you for your support: Mrs. Karen G. Barrett, Mr. Ben Barrett, Mr. George Spencer, Mrs. Shawanda
