    INTRODUCTION

    The Boys

    Pete

Pete is a young tyrannosaurus rex. He has nice, rich green skin that is lighter on his belly. He also has a handsome blue accent running along his back. Pete isn’t all that tall; in fact, for a T. rex, he’s kind of short. Even though he’s a bit on the small side, he has a great personality and loves to have fun with his best friend, Charley. The truth is, Pete would call Charley his best friend in the whole world, and that’s a fact. They have lived near each other for a while and have had many exciting adventures along the way. But we’ll have to save those for another time.

If you asked him where his favorite place to be was, he would answer with an excited smile and say, Under the Great Willow at Uncle Frank’s old-time Sundae Shoppe! The more you get to know him, the more you’ll know how true that is. If he’s eating a hot fudge sundae at the same time, you can be sure he’ll have an even bigger smile.

    Charley

Now it’s time for you to meet Charley. He’s about the same age as Pete, and he’s a triceratops. He’s a great guy who really enjoys having fun. His skin is orange, brown, and yellow. The three small horns on his head make him look very handsome. Charley is about as tall as Pete, which, for a triceratops, is a pretty good size. He’s the youngest in his family. If you asked him, he would proudly say he loves his mom, dad, and older twin sisters too. As far as I’m concerned, that makes him a pretty cool little kid.

Charley really enjoys riding bikes, skateboards, and scooters, as well as swimming in the local lake. He and Pete have been pals for as long as either of them can remember. I’m sure it’s not hard to imagine, but his favorite place to be is wherever Pete is.

    CHAPTER 1

    The Old West

I t was nearly noon on a nice summer Saturday. All around town, folks were enjoying themselves. Young dino kids played with one another in the warm sunlight. Some ran through sprinklers, some raced around their yards playing tag, and some dressed up pretending to be on adventures. Down the street, Mr. Jenkins was weed-whacking in front of the pretty little church. He worked hard and soon had the lawn looking very nice.

Mrs. Tanner carried a large jar of water with tea bags in it. She walked carefully across her front porch. After walking down into her yard, she placed it out in the daylight on a small round table near the front of her house.

The sun got higher and higher in the sky. It was shining brighter than ever. For all intents and purposes, this should have been a great day! But …

Pete and Charley sat on the front porch of Pete’s house. They were bored. When Charley had first come over, the two of them had played for a while, but then something happened. The next thing they knew, they were arguing. And it wasn’t a quiet argument—it got loud! This really wasn’t normal for the two boys. Pete got angry and said things he shouldn’t have, and so did Charley. Neither apologized. They just sat down on the porch and stared out into the street. They had huge frowns on their faces. That’s when the boredom set in. They didn’t just get sort of bored; they got really bored.

Moments turned into minutes, and before they knew it, they had been sitting there on the front steps, watching cars drive by Pete’s house, for a half an hour. Thirty minutes with nothing to do is a long time for two young dinos. Frustration almost always had that effect on them.

"I’m so bored," bellowed Pete as he threw his small hands up in the air and flopped back on the porch loudly. His tail thumped up and down on the wooden steps. He sighed.

Charley looked at the street and curled his small brow. There has to be something we can do. With one hand, he fidgeted with the center horn on his head. He watched as Uncle Frank drove by in his pickup. When Frank waved and smiled, Charley just lifted his other arm a little and sighed.

The green truck faded down the road and quickly lost the boys’ interest. Charley looked at Pete and said, I know! We could go to the park.

Naw, we’ve been to the park a bunch already, Pete said, still watching his arms as he wiggled them in the air over his head. I wanna do something more fun than that.

Charley leaned forward, put his chin in his hand, and sighed again. He watched as two oviraptors rode by on their bikes. They waved at him, and he smiled back. Hey, we could ride our bikes. He looked over at his friend.

Pete was still lying on his back. He squinted. Not today—just not in the mood. Sorry, Charley.

Charley looked back out to the street. Suddenly, Pete sat back up, smiling. We could go to the lake!

Charley’s smile turned back to a frown. Doesn’t sound fun today. Sorry.

It’s okay, Pete said. This is just not good. Now Pete was frowning too.

Charley perked up. We could eat! He looked at Pete with excitement, waiting to see what he thought.

Pete smiled. My dad’s home. Let’s see if he’ll fix us something.

The two boys jumped up from the porch and ran inside the house. The tall screen door nearly clipped Charley’s tail as it smacked shut behind them. They raced across the dining room with food on their mind.

Pete’s dad stuck his head out of the swinging door that led into the kitchen. Smiling, he asked, Can I help you boys?

The two young dinosaurs shouted at the same time, Food! They were smiling too.

Shh, Pete’s dad said, putting his finger to his mouth. He was still grinning. "Your mama’s resting. Your baby sister didn’t finally fall asleep till this morning, so she took an early nap. And I
