    Love Triangle - Steven Scott

    Chapter 1

    The Beginning

Relationships are difficult at times. In this day and age, there are different types of relationships. You have marriage, a relationship built on trust and faithfulness, a relationship that everyone knows you’re in. You have friends with benefits—a relationship with a person involved with you only for what you can do for them (basically, financing them). You have sex partners, or as it’s known in street slang, fuck buddies. That’s a relationship based solely on sex, and nine times out of ten it doesn’t matter where you go to have sex. And finally, you have a working relationship, when two people are around each other because of work.

With all these various types of relationships, it’s hard to find the right one for you without a lot of game playing.

It’s just as hard for men as it is for women to find a significant other. There are all types of people in this world. Some people want a family lifestyle, and others want to be free to see other people and have purely sexual relationships. Men who just want sex are called players or man whores. People often say that opposites attract, or that you have to train and mold your significant other in the way you want them to be. But how can you do that if you don’t have the same mind-set as your mate?

Reginald Browning and Marcus Simpson are friends and roommates. Reginald is a six-foot-three, twenty-five-year-old African American who is a successful corporate attorney. He dates often but is having trouble finding that special someone, a woman who is willing to love him for him and not for what he can do for them. Reggie wouldn’t say he’s the shy type; he just wants to take things slow. He’s the type of man who feels that a man shouldn’t be chased by a woman, but that the man should do the chasing. Reggie had only one serious relationship during his college years. It went as far as engagement, but it didn’t work out. They had two separate plans for their lives, and neither bothered to include the other.

Marcus is five foot nine with an athletic build. He’s a twenty-four-year-old African American, an ex–pro football player who ended his career before it ever got started. His problem? Drugs, booze, and women. Marcus consistently failed his drug tests, and the league finally had enough and kicked him out. He comes from a wealthy family. His great-great-grandfather invented the drinking straw, and now Marcus lives off his family invention. He dates quite often but never gets in a relationship. He’s a spoiled black man with no respect for women.

Marcus and Reggie met each other in college, where they became good friends. Now they’re roommates living in a loft downtown on Park Avenue in Queens, New York. Reggie didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth, as Marcus did. Their friendship is so tight that they call each other brother, since neither of them has any siblings. And that’s not the only thing they have in common. They’re both from Connecticut: Marcus from West Hartford, and Reggie from East Hartford.

These two men have different ideas of what a relationship should be like and different goals in going about developing them. Marcus is lazy with a childish mentality, and Reggie is the responsible type.

One weekend afternoon, Reggie and Marcus woke up and decided to hang out on Times Square. Later that night, they spent time at the bar, where they got into a deep conversation about love and relationships. Reggie asked Marcus, Do you think we will find the right women?

Marcus replied, I know I’m not looking for Mrs. Right. I’m looking for Mrs. Right Now.

Well, I’m looking for a woman to build a life and raise a family with one day, said Reggie.

As they continued to converse, they spotted two gorgeous women sitting a couple of tables down from them.

Marcus said to Reggie, Hey, let’s go holler at those broads over there.

"Don’t you mean ladies?" suggested Reggie.

    Man, whatever. Let’s go.

Marcus and Reginald made their way over to the ladies, and Reggie said, Hello, ladies. Are you here alone?

Yes, replied one lady, we are.

May we join you? Reggie asked.

The same lady said, Sure, why not?

The guys sat down and introduced themselves.

My name is Latasha Green, said the first lady, and she shook Reggie’s hand.

The second lady introduced herself and shook Marcus’s hand. Hi! My name is Tameka Jackson.

The four of them sat at the table, and the guys offered to buy drinks as they got to know one another. The women described themselves as single, unemployed actors and models, which everyone knows means broke. They conversed for a while, having a lot of fun and enjoying one another’s company. Hours went by, and when the guys were ready to leave, Marcus had a good idea. He invited the girls to come over for a nightcap, so the four headed for Marcus and Reggie’s place.

Back at the loft, they sat around drinking and laughing, having a good time. Eventually Marcus and Tameka got up and went into Marcus’s bedroom. Reggie and Latasha were still in the living room, talking and laughing. After about thirty minutes, they decided to go for a walk before he took her home. They walked around for a while, just talking and laughing. In Latasha’s mind, this was unusual, as she normally went back to the guy’s house and had sex.

First Corinthians 5:10 says, Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortionist, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

Most women need to learn to respect themselves as much as Reginald does. He wants a woman for her mind first, and her body can come along later. Reggie walked Latasha to her door, kissed her hand, and said good night.

Marcus and Tameka had been steadily drinking and started to kiss each other heavily in the bedroom. She pushed him down on the bed and started to put on a show, stripping off her clothes layer by layer.

When she took off her top, there was a big green mole the size of an apple between her breasts. The mark was hideous, and it made her whole body look ugly. Marcus’s eyes opened wide, and his face showed his disgust. Then Tameka took off her pants and Marcus noticed her hairy legs. Her body might have looked bad naked, but he was still going to have sex with her. Tameka was such a good dancer that it turned him on, despite her physical imperfections. He just hoped that she didn’t expect him to go down on her.

Tameka danced closer, and as she did, she started to unbutton Marcus’s pants. But after she removed his pants and boxers, her face couldn’t conceal her disappointment. Tameka didn’t know how to respond. Here comes two inches of love joy, she thought. It was disappointing to the point of being painful to have become so aroused and wet. Marcus had turned her on so much that she couldn’t even laugh at his little friend. He talked a good game, so she had figured he would sex a good game. The bedroom festivities began, but fifteen minutes of pleasure was all Tameka got out of the one-night-stand playboy.

The next morning Reggie woke up and started getting ready for work, while Marcus woke up Tameka and sent her on her way with bus fare. An hour later, both gentlemen left to go to work, and as they walked to the subway, they talked about the previous night.

Marcus asked, Did you get some last night?

No, that’s not what I was looking for, Reggie replied. I think that’s what she wanted, though.

Well, I had a good time, Marcus told Reggie. She danced for me before we had sex, but she had the hairiest legs I’ve ever seen on a woman. Kept on pricking me all night.

Reggie and Marcus conversed during the whole trip to work. Reggie got off the train at his stop and walked to his building. In the lobby he saw a beautiful, long-haired woman with cocoa-brown skin standing by the elevator. He walked over and introduced himself, extending his hand.

Excuse me. My name is Reginald, and I wanted to let you know that you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on.

The woman shook his hand and smiled. Well, thank you. My name is Angela. Angela James.

Nice to meet you, Angela. Are you a client?

No, I’m a lawyer and I just started today.

They got into the elevator. Well, Ms. James, Reggie said, I would like to be the first to welcome you to the firm.

She smiled and said, Thanks. Then she got off the elevator and went in one direction as Reggie went in the other.

Angela was the kind of woman who got what she wanted by any means necessary; she cared only about herself. She was thirty-four years old, had no kids, and never wanted any. Rumor had it that she had slept her way to where she was now. Angela didn’t believe in relationships and had never been in one. She was an opportunist, and she’d use anybody to get ahead.

Reggie sat in his office going through some audit paperwork with his assistant, Veronica Samuels. Veronica was a twenty-four-year-old paralegal who’d been Reggie’s assistant for two years, working side by side with him on many cases. She
