Simon and the Magic Marble - Charles C. Heisenberg

    CHAPTER 1

    First Day Of School

Ring, ring, ring. It was the third time I’d had to turn off my alarm clock. It was lucky that I didn’t destroy it.

I woke up feeling sluggish. I took a quick scan of my room—action figures of Upper Grounds, the characters Century, Lily, and Cosmic, a guitar, a jar of marbles, and comics.

I finally got out of my bed and hit the showers, brushing my teeth and singing—no judging, okay? I decided to wear a casual button-down with a hoodie on my first day of ninth grade.

After I came downstairs, my mom and dad were waiting to eat with me. My sister, as usual, was on a business trip for GigaEco Corps. She’s growing up and becoming like Dad, a workaholic, but it felt good that Dad was eating with us. Sis left a present for all of us.

After a good breakfast, my dad went to work, and my mom drove me to school. My mom parked the car in front of the school. The sign said Garfield High School, Home of the Garfield Knights.

I walked into the school. I looked at my watch—oh, shoot, seven thirty. I was late! I rushed to homeroom 3A57, and I soon heard a voice:

Welcome to room 3A57. I am your homeroom teacher, Mr. Franklin.

I quickly ran into the room. Everyone in class was staring at me, even Mr. Franklin. I thought, Phew, give me a minute. I regained my breath and sat down.

Mr. Franklin said, Well, that was an unexpected entrance. Excuse me, student, what is your name?

I told him my name, Simon, Simon Bridgham. He then told me that he was my homeroom teacher. Mr. Franklin was a middle-aged dude who wore round glasses. He must have been in his thirties or forties. Mr. Franklin gave all of us class schedules. I looked around. Something was giving me a strange vibe—the room had marbles as decoration all over the room. I looked to C block on my schedule. I had Mr. Franklin for honors history.

    Pssst, Simon.

    I ignored the voice.

    Yo, Simon. Behind you.

I turned and I saw my best friend, Kenny. Hey, Kenny, I haven’t seen you in three years!

He chuckled and said, I haven’t see you in a long time either. Did you move here this summer?

I said yeah. We did our secret handshake. It was quick and sweet. Kenny said, Turn back to face the board. He’s going to talk.

Mr. Franklin said in a stern voice, Does anyone have any questions for me? I couldn’t help it. I raised my hand.

    Yes, Simon?

    Are you a marble collector?

He laughed. Yes, I am. You’re the first to ask in two years. Kids usually don’t notice that, but yes. He paused. "Why do you ask,
