Story of the Bear Walker
Many moons ago, there was a Shoshoni named Laughing Horse. He was a great warrior among the tribe. However, soon he became corrupt with power, wanting more and more fighting skills. He looked to nature to give him this power, and he knew the perfect animal to get it from. The most powerful animal of all – the grizzly bear. He went after this king of the bears, the Great Bear. The battle between the two was gruesome. Laughing Horse got the upper hand at first by stabbing his knife several times into the bear’s shoulder. The bear then flipped the weary Indian across his back and onto the ground. Laughing Horse however grabbed a great stick and swiped the bear off his feet. The fight continued for hours and hours and hours until both fighters were too worn out to fight. Days later, a medicine man came across the two and took pity on them. To fix their unstitchable wounds, he combined them together through a series of ceremonies, forming a half-man, half-bear. Thus, the Bear Walker.
