An Irish Love Story

Chapter 1
Cruise
The nightmare, the darkness which was constant, the cool breeze blowing on her body drenched with sweat, Jenna sat up suddenly. She took a deep breath, letting the air out slowly. Then she took a second deep breath. The breathing helped calm her nerves. ‘Just a nightmare, not real, let the terror go.’ The voice in her head, tried to help. She grabbed the sheet that was piled on the bed next to her and wiped her face. Her body was trembling; her hair and body were soaked with sweat. Jenna took a shower and dressed for a run. She headed down to the deck to wait for her friend Karen. It was early but time for a run. There was a gentle breeze and the smell of the ocean.
Jenna, a lovely young successful business women, her long black hair wrapped up in a bun on top of her head. Her flashing blue eyes were hidden behind expensive large round sun glasses. She sat at a table on the deck of the Cruise liner drinking her morning coffee. The cruise ship traveled along in the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The sun was bright and the breeze was cool and fresh. The Caribbean Windy Moon was on its return trip to Florida. The Luxury liner with its triangle sails carried about 900 guests for a 14 day cruise. Sandy beaches and lush mountains were behind them. Six days more at sea would bring them back to land.
An Irish singing group was preforming for entertainment in the lounge and theater on the Main deck. They were called The Celtic Theory, playing violins, keyboard, pipes, drums, guitars and singing brought their audiences to their feet nightly. The other decks had restaurants, gaming rooms, stores and suites.
The weather was perfect for the pools and sun bathing. The trip had already been fantastic. Many of the guests relaxed around the pools and decks with their giant bright colored hats and sun glasses. Laughing and enjoying food and drink, during the sunny afternoons and early evenings on their return trip. In the early morning it was quiet, almost deserted.
Jenna had spent most of her life growing up and managing a large resort. It was one of the largest private resort and lodgings in the area. They catered to the rich and well known. The accommodations were very discreet, no cameras, no news media, just privacy. The resort was called The Mountain. It was tucked back at the end of a green valley at the base of several mountains. Naturally breath taking scenery wrapped it in a fantasy mountain vista. The main building and entrance were situated behind a large stone wall, covered with ivy and climbing roses. A large iron gate greeted the guests.
A dark-haired man came out behind Jenna, he ran at that same early time in the morning. He enjoyed the quiet before his busy day of entertaining the passengers of the cruise. His name is Rian Mactire. He had a soft Irish accent and a quiet personality.
Jenna was dressed in green and black jogging outfit with running shoes to match.
Hello, you’re up early.
Rian stated.
Jenna turns to face the direction of the sound. Your right, my name is Jenna, how about you?
Rian.
Are you with Celtic musicians?
Aye, are you enjoying the cruise?
Jenna’s friend who she was waiting for dropped into the chair next to her.
This is my friend Karen.
The sleepy eyed, half-awake blond nodded to Rian.
Do you run? Rian.
Yes a wee bit.
The accent made a slight smile come across Jenna’s lips.
Would you like to join us?
I’d love to.
Jenna stood up and waited for Karen to step to her side, placing her hand on Karen’s elbow. Jenna was ready for her run. In her left hand she carries a walking stick.
Ready?
Rian was suddenly surprised. Jenna was blind. He hadn’t notices the cane next to her chair. He cleared his throat.
Yes, I am blind Rian, does that bother you?
Jenna questioned.
Ah, well, no.
Rian stuttered.
He watched as Jenna and Karen got in position to run. Karen kept Jenna to her left to keep her from going over the side and guided her in the general direction of the run. The walking stick stopped Jenna from bumping into the deck chairs neatly lined along the inner wall.
I always run early because there are fewer people on deck. It is easier for me to avoid them and a few less stares. Are you ready?
Sure
Rian ran behind the two women and marveled at the speed increase. At the start, the run began at a fairly slow even pace, gradually increasing to a speed that raised the pounding of his heart. ‘Good cardiac run’ Rian thought. Twice around the deck and then, slowing to a walk.
As they slowed down to a walk, Jenna signals Rian to come up alongside. Hard to keep up?
Good run.
was Rian’s answer. How about again tomorrow?
Sounds good to me, same time, and same place?
Ok.
Jenna listened as he walked away.
The next day, Jenna was sitting quietly waiting for Rian to arrive. The breeze had increased. The sounds of the sea gulls screeching in the sky above and the flapping of the sails caught her attention. ‘How many people notice the feeling of the air and sounds of the birds?’ She took a deep breath to relax her nerves. ‘Was her new Irish friend going to show or would she still be sitting here when Karen returned? Why did this person interests her so much?’
"Are you ready?’ Rian’s voice caused her to jump.’ Where had her senses been? She did not hear him approach.’
Yes.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you jump.
I guess I was in my own world. It is unusual that a person can approach me without me hearing them coming. My senses have elevated because of my sight lose. Ready?
What about Karen?
Running is not her favorite sport.
Jenna stood up and took 2 steps forward and waited for Rian to step beside her. He placed her hand on his elbow.
Tell me what to do; I don’t want to cause any problems.
Rian was a bit nervous.
The first run together was rather eventful. After the first trip around the deck, the two were laughing so hard they stopped to catch their breath. I think I need some more training.
Rian chocked. Are you alright?
Oh yes, just a little bruised.
Jenna answered. She had bumped into a table, fell over a chair which was out of place, Rian had tried to stop the fall, the two of them landed on the deck. They sat there laughing. "Shell
We try again tomorrow?"
Rian looked up at her from his position leaning on a chair, trying to catch his breath. Are you sure it’s safe?
All you need is some practice.
Jenna giggled.
Her smile was incredible, Rian wanted to hear her laugh and see that smile. I will try.
As the days passed they enjoyed associating with each other and made a date for a morning run.
Sometimes after their run, they would go and have tea or juice. The cruise didn’t seem to last long enough. Rian and Jenna became good friends.
Rian, how bout dinner?
Jenna asked.
"When, tonight?
Jenna nodded, as they walk to the door.
Sure, sounds good to me.
Rian loved the idea.
Rian opened the door and let Jenna enter the main deck. She stopped and turned to face him. Where and what time?
The Show goes on at 8pm, How about having an early meal about 5:30pm on the Lido deck?
Jenna nodded, I’ll be there.
The time passed quickly, and Jenna was waiting at a table in the corner. Rian spotted her. She was different; her hair was hanging on her shoulders and instead of a tee shirt she was in a brilliant blue dress. A silver amulet hung around her neck and a matching silver band on her wrists made her sparkle.
He nodded at Ben the young waiter who had taken care of them when they were at the buffet. Rian walked to the table. Want a drink?
She lifted the glass in her hand, Bourbon and ginger.
It was the first time he had seen her drink hard liquor.
Ben came to the table caring bourbon and a beer. He handed the beer to Rian. Right?
Rian nodded and sat in the chair next to Jenna.
What’s for dinner?
Let’s let Ben decides.
Jenna smiled.
The Special, for my two favorite customers.
Ben’s voice was deep and he had a very strong English accent.
Ben brought 2 bowls of chilled mixed berry soup. Placing one in front of Rian putting the spoon and napkin next to the dish, the other he place carefully in front of Jenna. He touched her right hand and places the spoon in it. She moved her hand towards the bowl, the spoon touched it. It’s cold.
Ben instructed and walked away.
Rian watched her take a spoon full of soup without a drip.
How do you do that?
A lot of practice and a lot of messes.
Jenna smiled
The dinner continued with light conversation. The broiled New York tips, Ben precut and placed in a certain order on the dinner plate with the mashed potatoes and carrots.
Ben returned again and cleared the dishes from the table. He left and returned with bowls of rum raisin ice cream with orange liqueur poured over the top. This was Jenna’s favorite.
Ben likes to spoil me, would you like something else?
No this is great!
Rian replied. That dinner was delicious.
Jenna finished her drink and cleared her throat. I would like to introduce myself.
She raised her hand to stop Rian from speaking.
My name is Jenna Hawk. I own and run ‘The Mountain,’ which is the resort that the Celtic Theory and its crew will be preforming and staying at for 2 weeks. I did not mean not to tell you. It just didn’t come up. Tomorrow night, the captain will be introducing me at the dinner. I wanted you to know ahead of time, no surprises.
Silence
Say something, please Rian.
Rian looks surprised; he didn’t exactly know what to say. Finally he said. I guess it’s my turn. My name is Rian Mactire. I am one of the tenors in the Celtic group. I know you just thought I worked with them.
Jenna couldn’t believe that Rian was one of the principal singers.
It’s nice to meet you Rian Mactire.
Rian smiled, the same Jenna Hawk.
Now I have to introduce you to someone else
Jenna made a slight signal with her right hand.
A man at the bar, dressed in black, six foot or so tall easily slid off the bar stool. He picked up his drink and walked to stand beside Jenna.
John
Jenna.
Rian, I would like you to meet John Reed. He is a very dear friend and while I am not at home, He is my bodyguard.
John reached his hand out to shake hands. Nice to meet you Mr. Mactire.
Rian took his hand. Same, Mr. Reed, bodyguard?
Jenna had a half smile on her face, she knew he would question the bodyguard. Rian, I am a rather wealthy woman, owning the ‘Mountain’ and running it as a business. I hope you also noticed that I am blind. John trained me to protect myself and I hired him to take care of me.
Rian was quiet again.
"I don’t know what
