Introduction To This Book

What is it about Quiz nights or just trivia in general that brings out the genius in us all!?

The mere mention of the words gets people thinking they can answer any question at all, or at least have a fair idea of what the answer is. People enjoy the challenge of testing their knowledge and history on a variety of topics, especially when pitted against others that they are trying to beat.

The beauty of Quiz nights is that it brings out the competitiveness in all of us that participate in them, and the chance to prove that our team is better than the rest.

The first part is to give your team a name, something witty, something with sexual overtones or just something for the sake of it because no-one can think of anything clever. Be careful that you don’t name yourselves after a team member e.g. Trev’s Team. That defeats the purpose of having a team in the first place. In that case, just let Trev play by himself.

It is also the classic team sport in the true sense of the word, because at some stage EVERYONE will contribute an answer that will be correct, and if your team wins by a slim margin, then you can feel proud that your answer(s) contributed greatly to the win. Even the quieter members in the team feel satisfied that they knew the answer, it’s only because the know it all scribe wrote it down before anyone else could contribute. And isn’t being the scribe for that round such a powerful thing to have? Although not that great if no-one on your team has any idea, and the pressure is on you to write anything down for the sake of it.

And then of course is the healthy debate as to what answer to write down, yours, which you feel is the correct one, or someone else’s you know (in your heart, if not necessarily in your head) is definitely wrong. We then have the feeling of pride when yours was the correct answer, and you want everyone to tell you how knowledgeable you are; or the feeling of knowing you were wrong, and having to admit it to your team. There’s a term for all of this-take the good with the bad!!

For people who love that adrenalin feeling of a quiz night then this book is for you. Questions that are really easy, questions that you will work out after a bit of thought, questions where you think there may be more than one answer (even though there isn’t) or questions you have no idea about and will take a very random guess at; or you will try and provide a witty/smart arse answer to, knowing that’s it’s nowhere near being correct.

The format of the book follows the typical Pub Quiz Night format. Two rounds of questions-in this case 25 questions for each round, and then a Bonus Round of three more obscure questions, which in a Pub Quiz night are generally worth more money/prizes because of their difficulty, providing you get all three correct. Depending on which format you follow, if no-one gets all three correct then you can jackpot the prize next time; keep the prize the same, or, as some establishments do to encourage people to come week after week, set a goal for those teams to reach if they don’t get the three correct in one go. One establishment gave the big prize to any team that could get 12 bonus questions correct over time-this encouraged them to come back week after week.
