CHAPTER 1
Why Am I Doing This?
Y ou are probably wondering, Is this book really worth buying? And how is it different from other diet books and programs?
In the past, I too looked at so many diet books and had doubts about them. Most of the diet plans may promote fluctuating weight. Once you take a break from a diet, you may have gained back your original weight or more. I was intimidated by their complicated routines and recipes. Some diet plans require you to purchase food items, fat-burning belly-off pills, or other forms of substances. After a while, it gets boring; and then when you stop the diet, you may have gained all your weight back. Does this sound familiar to you? You are not alone.
It is hard to believe that billions of dollars are spent toward research alone, then several years are spent creating a weight loss program. The reality is that majority of these diet programs do not work. One is more difficult than the other, often requiring you to follow strict recipes; and of course, no deviation is allowed. Honestly, I did not spend billions of dollars; nor did I spend years creating a weight-loss program. This diet plan is very simple and easy to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. The development of this program was based on my personal life experiences. I achieved great results, and I now live a healthier life. Therefore, I would like to share with you the way to a healthier life.
Let me tell you why this book is truly distinct from the other diet plans out there. Before I begin talking about this plan, I would like to share with you my personal experiences that led me to a healthier way of life. I am an emergency medicine and family practice physician, and I must confess that I too have made unhealthy lifestyle choices in the past. Since I performed on an incredible number of hours each week, I did not have the time to exercise, and I ate unhealthy hospital foods. Typically, I drank loads of coffee, sodas, and practically indulged anything in sight. One morning in 2010, my life completely changed. I usually wake up at five o’clock in the morning to get ready for work. During my shower, I began to feel very ill. I felt sweaty and nauseated; something did not feel right. I turned the shower knob to cold water in hopes I might feel better. As I was trying to call to my wife, I had several projectile vomiting episodes, like the scene from the Exorcist movie. As I looked down in disbelief at what just happened, I noticed all the undigested food was coming out of me in an unbelievably violent manner. My wife walked in and was horrified by the amount of vomit in the shower. I kept thinking, My goodness, why has this happened, and how am I going to get to work? Do I have appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix)? Nonetheless, I struggled and cleaned myself as best as I could. Then I asked my wife to take me to the emergency room (ER) as a patient.
During the car ride, I was sort of drifting in and out of consciousness, and I felt a burning sensation in my abdomen, my back, and pretty much all over. We arrived at the ER, and my colleagues and the hospital staff looked at me with apprehensive expressions. I saw myself in the mirror, and I looked like a ghost, very pale with sunken eyes. My colleague performed an abdominal exam, and I felt tenderness in the right side of my abdomen. At this point, I felt that my belly was swollen and firm. I felt nauseated again, and the belly pain was unbearable. I had never experienced this pain before. A few weeks prior, my wife stated my stomach looked like the belly of a pregnant woman who was about to go into labor. Of course, I did not pay any attention to the comment she made and vaguely responded with I just need to exercise more.
Meanwhile, I was waiting for my CT scan of the abdomen—a detailed X-ray to see the structures inside the body. I felt a bit better with the medications that were given to me. I felt a bit weird being a patient at the hospital where I work. During the CT scan, I kept thinking, Who is going to take my work shift? Who is going to take care of my patients? What is going to happen to me? Do I need surgery?
After the CT scan, I immediately received a call from the radiologist who read the CT scan results. I instantly thought, Oh my god, I have cancer! The radiologist said, Cornell, what have you been eating?
And it took me a few seconds to comprehend what he had asked me. I felt relieved that it was not cancer. I responded, Well, the same hospital food that I eat every day.
Then he tells me, Cornell, you have the worst case of gastroparesis that I have ever seen in my entire career!
Gastroparesis means the stomach is not able to completely empty the contents inside, and this condition is sometimes seen in diabetics. Therefore, I thought this diagnosis was odd because I know for a fact I do not have
