The Ca’ens built an advanced civilization eight thousand years after surfacing from underground. Yet some questions about their past still remain unanswered. Kla-minilokion, one of the council leaders and a historian, was himself plagued by the unknown years of the past or the years that was called the lost time. When an observatory and astronomy group reported a small star they discovered that was eleven million years old, he asked the group to further investigate. They brought back pictures that not only showed a world orbiting a star but also showed on one monument their Ca’an’s writing.

Believing the existence of an eleven-million-year-old star, their writing, and the forcing of his race to live underground could not be coincidental, he decided to commission a unit to go to the planet in order to obtain any information that might reveal some historical truth about the past. He believed it would dismiss and discount all the myth from the truth.

Hilion-milinkinal, Tolin-niliminil, and Silion-nikimoloinil were the military and scientific groups tasked with the job of uncovering the mystery about the planet and the eleven-million-year-old woven sun. However, to uncover the mysteries, they would have to survive the guardian of the sun and face an unknown past.

We thought we could bring time to us and we could bring time to us and that would solve the light problem, the Advanced Robotic Being started. But our calculations were … all wrong. We were terribly … wrong.

Professor Mary Ann Smith glanced at what she now calculated must not be a human. I don’t understand how can you bring time to you? What exactly are you talking about?

The robotic being gave no answer at first. His blank stare was unbroken as if he was unable to continue. His hair looked so natural, his eyes strong blue, and his face, smooth. Yet the ability to walk above the ground and the massive armor he wore seemed formidable.

Marcus stood next to Professor Smith and asked, Sir, are you okay?

Professor Smith took two steps to the mysterious being. You said something about bringing time to—

Yes, we thought we could solve the problem behind this universe which was eighty billion years old, the being said.

I thought the universe as we know it was 13.7 billion years old, and who are you? the professor said in a puzzled tone.

My name is … Achilles, and I am … an ARB, Advanced Robotic Being, Achilles replied. We did at one time thought it was 13.7 billion years old. But then came Fireborn, and it taught us that the universe was eighty billion years old and created by God.

    Fireborn, the hand of Achilles

    Chapter 1

    Kla-minilokion’s Decision

Kla-minilokion stared longingly at the electrical schematic of the alien motherboard. The machine, although eleven million years old, was of particular interest to him. It resembled a schematic used by a race that once was rumored to exist on Qwinc-Lin eleven million years ago. Everything from the color of the board to the way the circuitry was arranged suggested this ship discovered no more than two days ago was far too similar to an ancient race to be ignored. Moreover, the need to find a detail of events that happened more than eleven million years ago demanded that he bypass nothing.

He sat in the chair and glanced at another picture produced by the hologram device. It showed a city on the planet Qwinc-Lin world one thousand five hundred light-years away. The vast wreckage and fallen monuments that littered the two cities, the absence of vegetation and trees, made it known that no one has lived there for years. More so, on several occasions, the insufferable heat made it plainly obvious no living creature, small or large, could ever live in that certain region. He could see the heat simmering from the streets, the ground, the broken and abandoned buildings, and the steel pillars. In some cases, steel seemed to be fused together.

Slowly, Kla-minilokion moved a small square device, and the hologram image of the city began to show a broader view of the city. He moved it until he got to a place that looked to be an open space where someone would gather to sit down on a bench or walk gingerly. He was certain he saw letters here similar to the one that was barely visible on the craft they discovered. He focused the picture on the broken concrete, which lay in ruins next to a small chair. He increased the magnification on the broken monument. But the letters were too vague to be completely identified.

On a smaller monument, next to the larger one, a metal barely more than two inches seemed to spark, almost like a beacon light in the dark. He brought his focus to the speaking metal. Beneath it were letters, a circle, a small dot, and two dots that touched a circle. They seemed all too similar to their letters to be coincidental. This meant his race had once lived there or at least journeyed there.

But if that was the case, then that planet may hold some answers to what happened on his world a little short of eleven million years ago. It could reveal why his race was forced to go underground and the cause for the destruction on his world.

He decided to send the pictures in the hope that in five minutes the council will decide whether to send another group to Qwinc-Lin again. The satellite pictures that the first group came back with a little over two months ago showed the world as barren.

The day, which was slightly longer than their days, consisted of twenty-six hours. By night, the temperature dropped a few degrees. It was a world that was inhospitable and devoid of life of almost any kind.

Their satellites also indicated that there was a complex nearly eight thousand feet beneath the surface, quite possibly powered by a different source of energy. More interesting were the short radio waves that were coming from the complex and going to the two small mechanical satellites orbiting that world. One of their craft tried to stop the satellites but could not. The satellites proved too fast for them. At times, they seemed to jump time, traveling enormous distances in less than one thousandth of a second. And at other times, they seemed to jump back in the past; it was almost as if the satellites had complete command time or could even create time.

When he spoke to the pilots two months ago, they told him the satellites moved in ways that defied almost every law of physics they knew. The videos of it gave many of their physicists and mathematicians (physicists and mathematicians were set as one profession) a reason to rethink how they viewed time and moving objects. The two satellites did not interfere with the pilot; they simply avoided the Ca’an spacecraft or their one satellite.

The small star that the planet orbited was just as much a mystery as the barren and desolate world. It, from all the records they had about the vast numbers of stars in the region, did not exist twelve million years ago. He knew without a doubt that stars don’t just appear suddenly. They were formed either from the beginning of the universe when the explosion sent the stable and enormously dense matter flying apart or from ionic gas coming together.

There was a good chance, he believed, that it may hold the answers to what happened to his world and give a point in time where he could start piecing together the missing years or the lost time, as it had become so commonly named.

Kla-minilokion knew there were some who believed the past was best left alone and undisturbed. It was better to forget what happened, especially when it was eleven million years ago. However, as a historian, he felt an obligation to know the truth; and as a member of the council and a father, he felt a strong desire to find out what happened to his world eleven million years ago. Also, his son and daughter once asked him if there was a difference between myth and truth. The question was pertaining to a story often told about the reason they used to live underground and why there were three massive explosions that forever changed their world. Kla-minilokion and an older Ca’an who was also a historian discussed the issue; and the decision was made, mostly on Kla-minilokion’s part, to continue the research and find the truth or something close to the truth.

He looked at the writing and knew what the council would do once they see it.

    Chapter 2

    Dreamers of Tomorrow

Kla-minilokion sat gingerly on his chair, his four fingers holding a metallic object two inches in length and three inches in width. The writing on the object was in the Ca’en language, dating back to nearly eleven million years ago. The duplication of the letters he saw was alarming.

Hello, Kla-minilokion, Ulinon-kamlinalio said as she and Silion-nikimoloinil walked in.

The senior member of the council said, You are ready for the journey.

    Yes, Silion-nikimoloinil replied.

Kla-minilokion stared at the two. The female looked to be about fifteen years old, a middle age for Ca’ens. The armor she wore appeared new and well capable of providing protection. The green and gray metal covered her entire body, making her look just as bulky as Silion-nikimoloinil.

The journey may not be longer than two likynil (two months), she said quietly. Her eyes focused on him. He hoped it would take no more than two likynil. She had promised her sister that. And as much as she had become comfortable with traveling vast distances, her family was still uneasy. Before she was chosen for the mission, she was doing her studies in history. Her younger sister, aged four, was her best friend. The two spent most of their free time together.

Space was too vast and uncertain, she thought. It had too many variables, and at times, it was completely impersonal. To journey to other worlds was always intriguing, fascinating, and humbling. But it always entails risks and dangers. She had to accept knowledge sometimes comes with a great price.

I know there are many relying on the information, Ulinon-kamlinalio said in a calm tone.

There are no reasons why you four should not make it back, the historian declared.

    Dreams of tomorrow

data said nothing alive is there. On logic alone, there should not be anyone there since the average temperature does fluctuate in some regions. There is no water, and the atmosphere is overwhelmed with radiations."

And the underground cities? Silion-nikimoloinil asked. Nothing more than buildings, Kla-minilokion returned.

We’ve looked over the report, Ulinon-kamlinalio confessed. It was quite impressive. I am assuming if all of this is true, it may help to piece together our past.

It may offer us an unprecedented chance to see what happened that caused us to move underground, stated the historian. You are studying history, right?

    Yes, Ulinon-kamlinalio replied.

So this is giving you the opportunity not only to record history but also to make it, Kla-minilokion said before he got off the chair. Your family will be glad.

My sister is already talking of how great a leader I be.

    How old is she?

    She is four.

    Good.

I have only one child, the historian admitted with a pinch of regret.

And it seems like you would want to have more, Silion-nikimoloinil said mildly. He judged from the way Kla-minilokion answered the question that he was not completely satisfied with one child. But the Ca’an was old, and so was his wife. He seemed more dedicated to finding what happened during the lost time than extending his family. Silion-nikimoloinil supposed it was easier to handle artifacts.

    Not really, Kla-minilokion replied.

Silion-nikimoloinil walked to the small table in the corner of the room and picked up a small rectangular object. A young Ca’en was on the front. This is your son?

    Yes.

A nice infant, Silion-nikimoloinil professed. Looking at the child, a part of him thought about having one himself. How wonderful it would be to hold the little child in his hand and to see the child grow. The female he was courting was eleven years old, while he was twelve.

    Dreamers of Tomorrow

about having children and expanding her studies in science. He knew they could only do this after he came back from his journey to Qwinc-Lin.

Is there any new information on the two satellites that orbited the planet? Silion-nikimoloinil asked after he turned around to face the historian.

Kla-minilokion looked quietly at the military officer. The four-foot-five-inch tall Ca’en was calm. His solid black eyes were on him, and the few brownish hair were pulled back to allow the helmet to fit comfortably. Silion-nikimoloinil was not extremely stocky, but he was slightly more built than the average Ca’an. He was also trained in the military and to handle special weapons.

I am hopeful that we will find answers, Kla-minilokion said. The other two who will join you will be Hilion-milinkinal and Tolin-niliminil. Hilion-milinkinal is a colleague of mine and a fellow historian. Tolin-niliminil, I am certain you know by now, is a scientist. He did work on the new spacecraft we used to go to Qwinc- Lin. If there is a situation that arises pertaining to science, I am sure he could help to explain it.

Kla-minilokion looked at the time on the desk just right of the window. In a few minutes you will be gone. I don’t have to remind you to be very conscious of the time. The planet and the woven sun are fifty hundred light-years away. We are seeing it now as it looked one thousand five hundred years ago. The new ships will compress time and allow you to travel the distance of one thousand five hundred light-years in four months.

Ulinon-kamlinalio shot the historian a thin smile and said, We will leave now. If we are to obtain some knowledge of the past, I suppose we have to be on our way. Tomorrow will bring some answers.

Dreamers of tomorrow, Kla-minilokion addressed her. I am old and you are the future. You are the dreamers of tomorrow. You have a strong belief to do what you have to do. You have dreams, dreams you believe in.

We are all dreamers of tomorrow.

Yes, I guess we all are, Ulinon-kamlinalio agreed.

    Chapter 3

    The Lost Time

Diol-niliminil looked at her young son. He was four years old, and already he was interested in astronomy. When he was not in school, he was at home often looking through his mother’s telescope. And what he didn’t learn in school he tried learning in the kil-molinnal, a small computer that gave information. Unlike his sister Gia-Milil’nanni who loved math, he was more interested in nebulas, planets’ origins, and black holes. They were what ultimately decided the course and the fate of life he believed.

As he looked at his mother, he smiled briefly and said, I know Father wants to see you once you are finished.

"He always wants to see me after
