The Chronicles of Kryptic Volume 2 - David Dossous

    CHAPTER 1

    Prison Angel

D AVID WAS INSIDE the limousine dressed in a tailor made suit wearing dark shades and a platinum diamond watch on his wrist. He had a huge smile on his face, drinking champagne with beautiful women sitting next to him. As the limousine arrived at the club, the chauffeur got out and opened David’s side of the limousine. David was welcomed to a roaring crowd and screaming women as he planted both feet on the red carpet. He fixed his suit and started waving at everyone. I WANNA HAVE YOUR BABY!!!! one girl screamed as David made his way to the front entrance of the club. The two doormen opened the front doors to let David in. The doors opened and a gang of thugs holding guns were standing in front of David. BLAST THIS FOOL!!!! the leader yelled. The gang started shooting at David as he fell to the ground. David woke up from his sleep and sat up immediately gasping for air. Damn. he said to himself. His cell phone vibrated. He received two text messages from Denise. She sent him pictures of herself. David presses the open button on his phone. The first message read good morning with a picture of Denise all wet with a towel wrapped around her body. The second one read I’m feelin’ sexy this morning with a picture of her in pink leggings that hugged her butt and thighs just right and a pink tube top with her long hair flowing down her back. David could do nothing but smile. Then he texted her back saying Bring ya sexy ass over so I can show u how sexy u really r. He grabbed the remote, turns the TV on and puts it on CNN. As usual, the primary focus is on the mysterious vigilante known as Kryptic. The lady on CNN was explaining how police officers have been flooding the streets of Fort Lauderdale in hot pursuit of Kryptic. David looked at the TV shaking his head and laughing a little. As he was doing that, he felt a migraine pain in his head as he continued to have visions. This vision focused on the day he was nearly killed. One of the guys stood and watched as David was on the ground not moving at all. Then he got inside the car and they drove off. David got up and went to the bathroom. He looked at himself in the mirror. His eyes began to change colors again. He took the pills and drunk some water with it. Moments later his phone rang. It’s his big brother Lionel calling. Hello. David said answering the phone. Hey little brother. Lionel replied. What’s up? David asked. I got some bad news, but promise me you won’t get mad. Lionel said. What? You won’t be able to make it here to take me to Atlanta and see Jerome? David asked. Yeah, how’d you know? Lionel asked. Just a lucky guess. But why would I be mad about that? David asked. Because…you know…every time I say I’m coming to get you, something always comes up. Lionel replied. So where are you headed this time around? David asked. I gotta go back to Tokyo, and then I gotta go to Russia. I might be gone for another month and a half. Lionel replied. Okay, so go handle your business bro. I’ll be right here. David said. Okay little brother. Once I get back, I’m comin’ to get you. Lionel said. Talk to you later man. David said hanging up the phone. David continued to get ready for work.

David showed up an hour early for work to put down chairs and tables. When he was done, he sat down at his table looking over the list of kids in his group. Denise shows up moments later. David just glanced at her but doesn’t say a word. The supervisor Ms. Coleman walked towards David. Hey Mr. David. How are you? she asked. Fine. David replied. You have a new kid in your group. Her name is Christina Harden. You’ll be picking her up today with the rest of the kids. Ms. Coleman said. Okay no problem. David responded. And this came in the mail for you. Ms. Coleman hands David a letter and walks back to her office. David looked at the address of the letter with a confused look on his face. The letter came from the PineField Prison. The name on the letter read Corey Harden. David was trying to replay the vision he had earlier. You gotta be kidding me. he said to himself. Denise walked up behind David and hugs his neck, then kisses him on his cheek. David was so focused on the letter, he didn’t even notice Denise who was trying to get his attention. Hellooo?? Denise said sarcastically. David drops the letter on the table. Wassup? he said to Denise. You tell me. You’re the one feelin’ kinda freaky this morning. Denise said raising an eyebrow. She then looks at the letter on the table. What’s that? she asked. Somebody from prison sent me a letter. And I think it’s one of the guys who tried to kill me. David responded. So are you going to open it and see what he has to say? Denise asked. David gets up from his chair and looks at Denise. Hell no, I’m not openin’ this damn letter. As far as I’m concerned, neither one of them ain’t got nothin’ to say to me. he said. David grabs the letter and goes to the trash can. He tears the letter up into pieces and drops them in the garbage. Denise walks up to David and puts her hands on his shoulders. David, he might be sending a letter of apology. she said. David backs up from Denise Oh yeah…Dear David: I’m sorry for almost killing you in a hail of bullets. David says in a sarcastic mocking voice. I think he’s the one who turned himself in. Denise said. Yeah…and snitched on everyone else who was part of it. Now he’s labeled a snitch. The last thing he needs to be doing is asking for my forgiveness and sympathy. He just better hope and pray he doesn’t get murked in there. David said. Denise walks up to David again and kisses him on his lips. Forgiving someone who’s done you wrong is hard sometimes, but you have to dig deep inside yourself to find it in your heart to do it." she said as she walked to the rest room holding her uniform shirt. David leans against the wall and takes a deep breath.

Over at PineField Prison, Corey was being escorted back to his cell after working out in the yard for an hour. He is serving a 20-year sentence on attempted murder charges last year. He’s been in prison for a year in a half and he’s only 19. Corey walked into his cell and sits down on the bottom bunk, looking up at the ceiling breathing heavily.

    (One year earlier…….)

Corey sat in the prison bus chained to another soon-to-be inmate. As the bus arrived at PineField Prison, inmates from the prison yard ran to the fence to greet the new inmates. The new inmates got off the bus and were immediately heckled by the inmates from the yard. Corey watched in fear. YEAH BUDDY!!!! one of the inmates yelled. THAT’S MY NEXT WIFE RIGHT THERE!!!! another inmate yelled pointing to the young white boy chained to Corey. The new inmates walk into the facility and the corrections officers wasted no time processing them. After all their belongings were confiscated, they put on their white prison jumpsuits and were escorted to their cell blocks. The CO escorted Corey to his cell. There, he saw a semi-muscular and older inmate. I don’t want any trouble in here. The CO said as he walked off. Corey stood in the same spot for nearly thirty seconds looking to see where he could put his things. The older inmate was on the top bunk reading a book. He looked over at Corey. So you just gon’ stand there lookin’ dumb? he asked. I ain’t dumb. You don’t know me. Corey said talking back. Just then, the older inmate got off the top bunk and stood in front of Corey. Corey drops his stuff on the ground and approaches the older inmate. What? Corey said in a challenging voice. The older inmate started to smile. Congrats youngblood, you passed the test. the older inmate said. The hell is you talkin’ bout? Corey asked. I know who you are youngblood. The older inmate said. Corey looks at him in disgust. Corey Harden. Known in the streets as Hard-Core. Doin’ twenty years for attempted murder on an afterschool care counselor. Snitched on the whole crew for a lesser sentence. the older inmate replied. Corey looked down. I knew you was comin’ here. Word on the yard is, there are dudes in here puttin’ out a hit on you for snitchin’ on Big-Van and his crew. the older inmate said. How you know that? Corey asked. Because Big-Van’s uncle runs this joint. And he been preparin’ your death for a good little minute. Your best bet while you in here is to keep your mouth closed and don’t look nobody in the eye. That’s all I can say to you. the older inmate said. Corey shakes his head in disbelief. He hadn’t been in prison for more than an hour and he’s already a marked man with a deathwish. If I die, then I die. I guess I’m just gonna be lookin over my shoulder, but it’s whatever. Corey said shrugging his shoulders. Bye the way, they call me Ghost. the older inmate said shaking Corey’s hand. Why they call you Ghost? Corey asked. Because I see and hear everything without anybody even knowin’. I’ve never been in a fight with anotha’ inmate, I ain’t never made another guy my wife, and I’m not in a gang. Ghost answered. I just mind my own business and do my time. I been here 16 years and I got five more to go. So ain’t nothin’ gon’ stand between me gettin’ my freedom back. he added. Why you in here? Corey asked. Armed robbery. Ghost answered. Moments later, Corey and Ghost could hear other inmates coming inside. They both walked out of the cell and looked down on the first floor. See…there he is. Ghost said looking down at an extremely muscular, tall black man with gray dreads walking into the prison. That’s Big-Van’s uncle. They call him Sweet Daddy. Ghost said. Why they call him Sweet Daddy? Corey asked in a whispering voice. You see that girl next to him holding the inside-out of his pants pocket? Ghost asked. Yeah. Corey answered. That’s his wife." Ghost said looking at Corey. Corey looked down at the guy holding on to Sweet Daddy’s pocket. He had extensions in his hair, eyeliner, lipstick, and his shirt was tied in a knot above his stomach exposing a belly button ring. He also has a tattoo on his lower back that reads Property Of Sweet Daddy. He likes to prey on young inmates. His wife’s name used to be Antwan Ferguson. Now..Her name is Twanna. Ghost said. Corey and Ghost went back into their cell as Corey sat down on the bottom bunk. And one more thing. I’m lettin’ you know right now, I’m not gettin’ involved in anything you dealin’ with. Only thing I can do is tell you what I know. But when your time comes, it’s a wrap. I’ve seen a lot of youngbloods come and go over the years and you won’t be no different. Ghost said as he hopped on the top bunk. Corey stayed silent pondering how long he had left before his time comes.

    (End Flashback)

Corey got up from his bunk. He looked at himself in the mirror breathing heavily. He took the rubber band from his wrist and tied his dreads in a ponytail. After he wiped the sweat from his forehead, he got down on the floor and started doing push-ups. Corey had put on some muscle since being incarcerated because he knows that in order to survive, he has to develop strength both physically and mentally.

The afterschool care staff took the kids outside to the playground after homework time was up. David stood at his usual spot, the very top of the playground where he can see everything. He looked over at the pavilion and noticed that the new girl Christina Harden was sitting all by herself. David got down off the playground and went over to Christina. Hey Christina. David said. Christina just waves at David. What’s wrong? Is everything okay? David asked. Christina shakes her head no. So what’s wrong? David asked. I miss my big brother. Christina answered. Oh..I’m sorry. What happened to him? David asked. He went to jail. Christina answered. What’s your brother’s name? David asked in a concerned voice. Corey. Christina answered. David eyes widened as he realized that Christina’s brother was one of his would-be killers and the one who sent him that letter. Corey Harden….Christina Harden. I should’ve known. David said to himself. I’m sure everything is going to be okay. he said trying to make Christina feel better. Two tears fell from her eyes. They’re gonna kill my brother. she said wiping her face. David had a concerned look on his face as he sat next to Christina. What do you mean they’re going to kill him? David asked. Me and my mom got a letter from him saying that he’s going to die soon. Some guys in jail are gonna kill him." Christina answered. She continued to cry a little leaning on David’s shoulder. David takes a deep breath.

Corey was in his cell continuing to work out his body, doing sit-ups and pull-ups. Just then a prison guard comes to his cell. Harden….HARDEN!!!!! he yelled interrupting Corey’s workout. What man? Corey asked in aggravation. Warden wants to see you. the guard replied. For what? Corey asked. Don’t know….don’t care. Now let’s go. the guard replied grabbing Corey by his arm. As Corey was being escorted out by the guard, he looked around as other inmates stared at him. Another prison guard was escorting Sweet Daddy back to his cell. Corey looked him dead in the eye and Sweet Daddy made a cut-throat sign signaling that the end was near for Corey.

The day was almost over at work. Most of the kids were gone. Christina and three other boys were waiting to be picked up. David and Denise sat next to each other talking. What’s wrong David? Denise asked. I’m dealing with a lot right now. David responded. When do you never deal with a lot? Denise asked. David stares at Denise not saying a word. I’m sorry. Denise said. You see that girl over there? David asked pointing to the far end where Christina was. Yeah. That’s the new girl isn’t it? Denise answered. The letter I received today……. was from her brother. David said. Denise’s eyes widened. What? Are you serious? Denise asked in shock. Yeah. I saw her sitting by herself at the playground and I asked what’s wrong. So she told me that her brother Corey….is in prison and a prison gang is going to kill him pretty soon. David said. That’s what I’m telling you David. Maybe he sent you a letter so he can try to make things right by you. He knows that his days are numbered. I guess he’s using the time that he has left to make it right with everyone he hurt. Denise said. You should’ve seen her. She was leaning on my shoulder crying. I don’t even think she knows that her brother tried to kill me. But now that she’s here, I gotta be responsible for her. David said.

Corey sat down in front of the warden waiting to hear what he had to say. Mr. Harden, how are you sir? the warden asked. I’m alright I guess. Corey answered. How are you adjusting to prison life here? the warden asked. I’m just tryin’ to stay alive. Corey responded. I’ve heard through the prison grapevine that there’s a hit out on you. the warden said. Do you know anything about this? the warden asked. Corey shakes his head no. You don’t know anyone here that might have a personal vendetta towards you? Possibly seeking revenge? the warden asked. Corey again shakes his head no. Look son, I’m trying the best I can to help you out. Not a lot of wardens would do that. I have some options for you. I can assign you to PC, Protective Custody. the warden said. Look here man, I don’t need you or anybody else. If I die, then I just die. Corey said with aggression. Don’t you have a little baby girl? the warden asked. Corey looked to his left and didn’t say a word. How old is she? the warden asked. Corey looks at the warden. She six months. he answered. Do you love her? the warden asked. What this gotta do with anything? Corey answered with a question. Don’t you wanna stick around and be in your daughter’s life? the warden asked. She better off without me. Ain’t nothin’ I could teach her. Corey answered. That’s not true. You can teach her a lot. But you have to keep faith. the warden said. Are you done? Can I get back to my cell? Corey asked. Alright but you’re digging your own grave. the warden said. The prison guard escorts Corey back to his cell.

David and Denise waited as Christina was the last kid to get picked up. Moments later a woman with short burgundy hair came in and Christina got up and walked up to her and gave her a hug. David looks at Denise. I have to go tell her. he said to her. Do what you have to do. Denise replied. David gets up and walks up to the lady. Hello ma’am. David said. Hi, how are you? the lady asked. I’m fine thanks. David replied. Let me just say that I’m so sorry for what my son did to you. the lady said. That’s who I wanted to talk to you about. He sent me a letter but I threw it in the trash out of anger. But I had no idea at first that his sister was in my group. And she expressed to me that she misses her brother. David said. My son was like her dad. Ever since they dad left, he’s been like her father figure. But now his girlfriend had a baby six months ago, so it’s been really hard on all of us. I don’t even know if he’s gonna survive in there. He sent me a letter sayin that he gon’ get killed. I understand how you feel about my son, but regardless of what he’s done, he’s my son and I’ll always love him even though he was wrong for what he did. Christina’s mother said. David takes a deep breath. I know this might sound weird but, I truly believe that he’s sorry for what he did. He knows that he might not live long enough so he’s trying to find some closure in his life. I think you should go see him. Christina’s mother said. I don’t know about all of that. David replied. Just think about it. It might help you find happiness and closure for you as well. Christina’s mother said. I’ll consider it. What’s your name by the way? David asked. Vallery Hill. the lady said. Nice to meet you Ms. Hill. David said shaking her hand. Christina’s mother left. Seconds later, David got another vision in his head. He saw Corey leaning against the wall in the prison as prison gang members stared at him from a distance. David rubs his forehead. Denise comes out and approaches David. You okay? she asked. Yeah, I had a talk with Christina’s mom. David said. What’d she say? Denise asked. She thinks I should go visit her son in prison. David answered. Are you? Denise asked. I don’t know. I might or might not. David said. Well you know I’ll support any decision you make. Denise said. You ready to go? David asked. Yeah, you wanna spend a couple nights at my house? I know you get lonely sleeping by yourself. Denise said smiling. You already know what time it is. And I’m full of energy right now. David said. I’ll go get my stuff inside." Denise said.

It was time for lights out. Inmates were heading back to their cells. Corey leaned against the wall looking around. He noticed at the far right that Big-Van’s uncle Sweet Daddy and a group of other inmates staring at him. Corey looked away trying not to make full eye contact. Keep your mouth closed and don’t look nobody in the eye. The advice Ghost gave him replayed in his head. HEY….lights out. yelled a prison guard as Corey walked back upstairs to his cell. He sat down on the bottom bunk with his hands folded looking down for a few seconds. Amen. he said to himself. Then he laid down on his bed with one knee up. The buzzer sounded as all the cell doors began to close.

David and Denise were getting ready for bed. David was on his stomach watching TV. Denise stands between him and the TV wearing purple short-shorts blocking David’s whole view. Really? Like, for real? David asked smiling. You like this view better? Denise asked turning around. Your butt is like right in my face. David said. I know. Denise said. She climbs on David’s back. I feel your thighs vibrating. David said. That’s because I’m twerking on your back. Denise said laughing. Really? David asked. Yup. Denise answered. So did you talk to your brother? she asked. He called me this morning actually. David responded. I have to wait for two months before I go to Atlanta to see my other brother. he added. David flips over on his back while Denise sat right on top of him. Why is he taking you to Atlanta to see your other brother. Denise asked. He said there’s some people that he wants me to meet. David answered. You didn’t answer my question today. What was up with you this morning sending me that text? Denise asked. I don’t know, you tell me. You’re the one who sent me those pictures and got me all fired up. You’re the one twerking on my back and sitting on me right now. David answered smiling. You do have a point. Denise replied. She adjusted her body and leaned closer to David. Denise kisses him on his lips as David grabbed her waist.

Corey was asleep in his cell. A loud noise woke him up instantly. A man in another cell from a distance was yelling and screaming in agony like he was being violated. Corey laid flat on his back breathing heavily.

The next morning, Denise woke up and noticed that David wasn’t in bed. She had a confused look on her face. She got out of bed and adjusted her shorts. As she made her way through the hallway, she looked to see David in the living room sitting down with breakfast on the table. Oh my God. I can’t believe you did this. she said with a smile. David smiles back. Where did you find the time to do this? Denise asked. I was up early thinking about some stuff, so I decided to make breakfast. David replied. Denise gives David a big hug. David hugs and taps her on the butt. OWW!! I’m still hurt from last night. Denise said. David smiles at her and laughs a little. For a second I thought you left. Denise said sitting on David’s lap. How long have we been messin’ around with each other? Have I once ever left the next morning only for you to wake up and not find me? David asked looking at Denise. No, but soon you will. Denise replied. What do you mean? David asked seeming confused. You’re gonna be working with your brothers making a lot of money. And with a lot of money comes different women popping in and out. So I have to be ready for that. Denise said looking down at the floor. David holds her chin up. Don’t think like that okay. I’ll be able to handle myself when the time arrives. David said hugging her tightly. I gotta couple more months before I have to deal with all of that. Let’s just focus on now. David said. Okay. Denise replied with a little smile. I think I’m gonna go see Corey. Not because I want to, but for his family. David said. That’s great. Denise said.

Corey was doing his morning workout routines. He did push-ups, sit-ups, and lifted some weights. Just then his former cellmate Ghost approached him. Corey puts the weights down and dusts off his hands. Wassup Ghost? Corey said. Listen, I just came from the hallway. Sweet Daddy and his boys, they comin’ after you tomorrow night. Ghost said to Corey. Corey takes a deep breath. Alright cool. Corey said shrugging his shoulders. That’s it? No Oh My God? Ghost asked. Nah. I’ve been preparin’ for this since last year. At least now I know when it’s gonna happen. Corey said. Ghost looks at Corey for a while. You brave. I give you that much youngblood. You got heart. he said to Corey. Everybody gotta pay the price someday. Corey responded. But this one is beyond personal. he added.

David had his group of kids at the table playing board games. It was early release day and the kids left school at 1:00. David noticed Christina was sitting by herself again at the very end of the table. David takes a deep breath. He realizes that even though he’s angry with Corey, he still has the responsibility to look after his sister while she’s at the park under his watch. He walks over to Christina. Hey Christina. he said to her. Hi Coach David. she replied. What’s wrong? David asked. I don’t have anyone to play with. I don’t think anyone wants to play with me. she answered. That’s not true. You’re just a little shy and that’s perfectly normal. You know how to play UNO? David asked grabbing the UNO cards. Christina shakes her head no. I’ll teach you. David said shuffling the cards.

Corey continued to lift weights as part of his afternoon routine. His tank top was soaked with sweat. He puts the weights back on the rack and takes a breather. Moments later, a prison guard was approaching Corey. He already knew what this was about. Harden? Warden wants to see you now. he said. Corey got up and sized the guard as he started to walk back inside.

David and Christina were playing UNO. Christina was starting to get the hang of playing. You beat me again. David said laughing. Christina starts to smile. Did you have fun? David asked. Yeah I guess that was pretty fun. Christina replied. Just then, a girl who looked to be in her teens walks in the door holding a baby. Christina looks over and immediately recognized the girl. I’m leaving Coach David. she said. Who’s that? David asked. That’s my brother’s girlfriend. And that’s his daughter. My niece. Christina answered. Oh okay. Get your stuff. David responded. He walks up to the girl holding the baby. Hello I’m Coach David. he said. Nice to meet you. I’m Rashonda. the girl replied shaking David’s hand. I was teaching Christina how to play UNO. She’s a little shy but I’m helping her work through it. David said. Her mom told me to pick her up because we goin’ to go see my daughter’s dad in prison. So that’s why I’m here. Rashonda said. Corey? David asked. Rashonda shakes her head yes. The baby was looking at David smiling with a pacifier in her mouth. I think she likes you. Rashonda said. David smiles as the baby waves at him. You wanna hold her? Rashonda asked. David is a little reluctant because he knows who her father is. The baby reached over to David as Rashonda handed her over to him. What’s her name? David asked. Coryna. Rashonda replied. The baby hugged David laying her head on his shoulder. Wow, she must really like me. David said. The doctor said that some babies can sense good and evil in people. She won’t just come to anybody. I showed her a picture of her daddy and she started crying. Rashonda said. David puts his hand up and baby Coryna hits his hand consecutively. Christina comes over with her book bag ready to go. Okay see you tomorrow. David said handing Coryna back to Rashonda. Bye Coach David. Christina said giving him a hug. Okay, take care now." David said as they left.

Corey sat down across from the warden who needed to speak to him. Are you excited about today? Your family is coming to see you. the warden said. Corey shrugs his shoulders. You should be ecstatic. Many of the other inmates don’t even get any visits. the warden said. I’m just gonna say what I have to say and that’s that. Corey said folding his arms. You’re a very selfish individual. Your family wants to see you because they care and worry about you and you don’t even care. the warden said. Why you even care how I feel? I’m just another inmate in your prison. I ain’t nothin’ in here. Corey said. When I look at you son, I don’t just see another inmate. I see a young man who had all the potential in the world. But you let it go to waste and ended up in here for the choices you made. the warden said. Corey just stares at the warden angrily without saying a word. I’m giving you one more chance to make the right choice. Your life is in danger and you know that. I know it as well. Away from the General Population, you won’t have to worry about these situations. the warden said. Corey unfolds his arms and looks directly at the warden. No. he said to the warden. I’m done. You can leave now. But I’m not responsible for anything that happens to you. the warden said. Whatever." Corey said getting up and leaving the office.

The work day was almost over. David fixed the registration papers and puts it in the folder. He came across Christina’s paper. She lived on the same street in 30th avenue where David was shot. Denise walks in the office and sits across from David. Long day? Denise asked. Yeah. David replied. I saw you talking to that girl that picked up Christina. Was that her sister? Denise asked. "Not exactly. That’s her brother’s girlfriend and his daughter. They’re going to visit him today.
