    PROLOGUE

    This is the life I am condemned to live, a life of abuse, street harassment, bullying, neglect, and practically anything a girl suffers in a deranged society. I am a twelve-year-old girl who suffers in her own home. My dad relentlessly beats me and drops me at his friends’ houses to be taught a lesson, which always leaves me bleeding profusely. You might be wondering what my name is, but that is the problem. I have no name. On my christening day, my dad, my mum and I were kidnapped. My mum was killed in the kidnapper’s car. My dad was confused and angry, so our relatives advised him not to name me yet. According to our culture, it is believed that, he who angrily names a child will happily kill them both. (Eni to ba fomo loruko pelu ibinu, a pa oun ati omo re ni).

    MISERY

    My back ached and twisted as my father whipped me for supposedly being the reason he lost his money while gambling. He whipped and whipped me ceaselessly.

    You child born of ill-luck. See what you have caused me? I lost my wife because of you, and now I have lost my money! he shouted.
