Dorila A. Marting

Dorila A. Marting gives us a riveting portrait of a land and a culture very unlike our own. At the same time, her universal themes—the eternal struggle between the generations, the ties that bind—make for an astonishing debut novel filled with colorful characters and intriguing situations anyone can relate to. Coming to the United States as an immigrant, Dorila A. Marting is proud to be a naturalized American citizen. From 1959 to 1968, the author was a correspondent for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix and the Arizona Daily Sun of Flagstaff. A member of Arizona Press Women and the National Association of Press Women, she has received ten State Press awards and one national award for her journalism. Following graduate work at the University of Arizona, she became a Spanish language and ESL teacher. Now in her golden years at age eighty-seven, Marting is in perfect health and continues to write creatively from her home in Tucson.

    Alma Mater

    Alma Mater

    (English)

Like the swallow that lifts its wings

I could hardly wait to graduate.

How I wanted to leave quickly

In search of new routes and go.

Now in your arms I am a prisoner

Like a culprit that awaits the sentence.

    Goodbye beloved classrooms, goodbye.

    In your beloved, fecund classrooms

How the fruits of wisdom and knowledge

at the beat of time, whispers and illusions

My mind assimilated like in Eden.

The hours were short and delightful

In the middle of jasmines and roses.

    Goodbye beloved classrooms, goodbye.

With afflicted soul, I watch your yards,

Today, in a fresh and white morning.

Like a precious jewel, I admire you

With clouded eyes from my window.

When I am far, very far away from you,

You will live close, very close to me.

    Goodbye beloved classrooms, goodbye.

    An Invitation To Relaxation

Come with me for a full relaxation

To my cozy place for an inspiration.

The ground is laid of color emerald green

From tender soft grass, you have ever seen.

The blue little pool is very, very inviting,

With whispering fresh, clear water empting.

It runs down from the tall, mountain top,

And travels to the lovely pool nonstop.

Relax, serenaded by most colorful birds

In soothing voices that you have ever heard.

Float as gently as the passing sweet wind,

    Your tensed, tired nerves will
