The day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night
1 Thessalonians 5:2 (TLB)
-Central Arkansas-
Roaring engines echoed through the silence. Small animals scattered as the motorcycles tore their way up the mountian. Dust enveloped them as they skid to a stop. The trail ended.
What’s out past those trees?
asked Mark, pointing towards the end of the trail.
I don’t know. I heard there were caves higher up the mountian.
Chris replied. You want to see if we can find them?
Not today, I promised my sister I’d take her to the mall this afternoon.
Mark, listen.
Listen to what? I don’t hear anything.
Exactly, it’s too quiet. Even the birds stopped chirping.
Then came a rumble beneath them. The ground vibrated. The shaking increased, causing trees to snap in half. The earth shifted so quickly that Chris and Mark fell to their knees. Moments later, it stopped.
Mark, are you okay?
I’m okay. Let’s get out of here.
They rode as fast as they could down the mountian. A half mile from town, a man, waving his arms frantically, stood in the middle of the road. Both men slid their bikes to a stop.
Please help me! I can’t find my wife!
he screamed.
What happened?
asked Chris.
The earthquake.
he gasped. I lost control of my truck. My wife is gone. Please help me find her. She just vanished.
Chris searched the ditches. Mark looked under and around the truck. Then he glanced inside.
Chris, come here.
What’s wrong?
Chris asked as he jogged toward the passenger side of the truck.
Look, the seat belt is still buckled.
Mister,
Chris said as he turned toward the old man. We’ll go into town and send the police out to help you.
Just inside town, they were met with more shocking surprises. Cars were wrecked everywhere. People wandering in a dazed state. Jumping from their bikes, they ran from car to car.
What’s going on?
Mark yelled, with panic in his voice.
Look,
Chris motioned. Most of the seatbelts are still buckled. Just like in the old man’s truck.
A woman ran down the sidewalk, screaming.
Where’s my baby! I can’t find my baby!
Chris, my house is the closest. Let’s go!
Mark fired his bike up and sped off. Chris followed.
Nobody was home at Mark’s house. Chris tried to phone his parents. No answer.
Chris, where is everyone? What’s going on?
I don’t know. Turn on the television.
All of the network stations were
