Often I have been asked what prompted me to write a novel. My answer has always been that the Holy Spirit gave me the assignment, and inspired me to write it. When I first received the assignment to “write a book,” I had a good belly laugh, because I was a very unlikely candidate to write a book. Even today, when people see my handwriting, they ask, “What country are you from?” I could just imagine the adversary was also laughing, because he would never believe that I would accept, or be capable of writing a book. As I thought upon the possibility of writing a novel, it brought back many memories of my first few years of grade school. My teacher told my mother, “Your son is retarded, and he does not belong in a public school.” This statement, by my teacher, was made in front of me and lowered my self-esteem for many years. However, a subsequent test revealed that I had an IQ of 138. The knowledge that I was not retarded helped me to overcome my past, and accept my shortcomings. I then began to deal with the issues that dyslexia had caused in my life. I first received my assignment to “write a book,” during one of my daily prayer sessions. At first, I was hesitant to believe this statement was from the Holy Spirit. So, I specifically addressed this issue with God, and he assured me it was indeed the Holy Spirit speaking to me. But I said to the Lord, “You know that I have dyslexia, so why me Lord?” The Lord answered me, “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” I said, “Lord if I take this assignment the Holy Ghost will have to be the author.” The Lord assured me that he would be with me every step of the way. For many years of my life, I worked in the private sector as a successful motivational speaker. In many cases, I was teaching biblical principles but never realized it until later in life. After I had given my life to Jesus Christ, my life changed. I was no longer interested in things of the world, but in Christ’s word. For years, I have studied God’s Word and strive to live passionately a life that would be pleasing to our Lord. As I went about writing the novel I encountered many problems, but the Lord was faithful every step of the way. My typing skills are very poor, and the Lord gave me voice activation software. Also, God brought a person to me who was willing to read and edit my manuscript. I give all glory to God for providing me the tools to make my dream come true. So, I can tell you that I was able to finish the novel because I did it “God’s Way.” I am now working on my second book, and I can assure you that I am also doing it “God’s Way.” I am often reminded of Psalm 35:5, “Commit thy way unto the Lord, and trust in him, and he shall bring it to pass.” (Geneva 1599) If you do it “God’s Way;” you too can be an author, or be whatever you choose to be. At Peace - Warren Nieblas MacKenzie

    CHAPTER 1

    A DREAM COME TRUE

T he crisp cold air of early morning was coming down from the high peaks of the mountain, and a slight ray of light was coming up over the lowest peak. In a burst of a luminous golden flare, the Sun introduced its self. As the sun shown brighter on this day, it cast its rays across the waters on the other side of the fiord, as it revealed a very tall individual. The year was 1670, the place was in an obscure village in Norway, and this individual was a supreme Norseman of dynamic proportions. Standing erect at six foot six inches was a Viking, whose name was Larsno tsen.

The life of a Viking was not an easy one, even for a great man like Captain Larsnotsen. All too often the elements of this harsh and brutal life of the North would come suddenly, without warning, and take its toll. The life of the Norsemen, in the winter, took great resolve just to get by. Only the unyielding and alert would survive. Larsnotsen was just this kind of man. He was big, strong, and alert, and he was also a great Viking warrior, and he was indeed a survivor. He was the personification of a true overcomer.

The sun spotlighted the brilliant red locks that cascaded down over his massive shoulders. Larsnotsen wore clothes made from reindeer skins. His blazing blue eyes showed that he was a man of single-minded purpose. He had deep inner spirit, in conjunction with strong desire, and that is what controlled his every thought.

Larsnotsen was not an emotional person, as he always said, let your emotions rule you, and eventually they would destroy you.

His facial features appeared to be chiseled out like by a master sculptor. Jetting out from his chin was a red and meticulously trimmed beard.

He was a man of perfection and detail, so nothing was out of place. Draped across his shoulders was a reindeer skin hanging just above his waistline, revealing an unusually slender waist. Around his waist was a wide and intricate, hand-woven leather girdle. Hanging from the girdle was a most impressive twelve-inch long knife. The knife handle was hand crafted and carved from an ornate bone. No doubt, the hand that used this knife had to be a person skilled in the art of cutlery. As the sun heated up, Lars removed his reindeer skins, revealing an arm, equally massive to match his shoulders.

The skin on Larsnotsen’s arms was so taut that they displayed steel-like muscles. Not many people ever challenged Larsnotsen and lived to tell about it. Standing tall in smooth black knee-high leather boots, one would assume, and rightly so, that Larsnotsen was a man of authority. No one ever dared too questioned his commands. All who knew Larsnotsen, friends and foes alike, considered him a sea captain’s, captain.

Soon, Lars, which was the name his friends gave him, would be launching his new ship. For two years, the builders had been working on this new craft, which was designed by the captain. The ship was almost twice the length of the average Viking vessel, and was about one-third wider, with a deep draft. Lars’ plan was to sail to places unknown to anyone. His goal was to bring back a ship with more cargo than he had ever brought back before. Lars could be described as an explorer and adventurer personified. He was not a boastful person, nor did he talk about what he was going to do. Lars was a man of action, and he was always going about his business.

Lars would say on numerous occasions:

Many people fantasize about it, but do not do it.

Many people dream about it, but do not do it.

Many people talk about doing it, but do not do it.

"There are some people, oh so rare, who say nothing at all,

    They already did it."

Many of Lars’ contemporaries, talked behind his back saying, The ship will never have any speed, being that big.

They would say, The sails would have to be so big that the weight would slow down the vessel.

They would also contend that the boat would never have enough wind to move it through the North Sea waters. In other words, it would just be a barge, at best. However, Lars was always several steps ahead of everybody else. On his last trip out, he acquired a large quantity of pell, which is the Viking word for a type of strong silk, from an English trader. This new material was remarkably firm and light. He had already made sails for a smaller craft, which proved to be seaworthy. To Lars delight, he proved his theory to be valid. The new light weight material picked up the wind fast and provided a considerable increase in speed to the vessel.

As Lars stood there, looking off into the distance at his ship, a tall, slender woman, with long reddish blonde hair, came up behind him. Her name was Julianne.

Putting her long arms around Lars’ waist, she said, Oh Daddy, did I scare you?

Just how many times she had done this to her father was uncountable. As a little girl, she would wait behind a chair, or behind a tree, until he passed by. Then she would grab onto him, at belt level, and hang on for dear life. It was a game she never stopped playing, and Lars loved to play it as well. With her arms still tucked tightly around his waist, she gave him an even bigger hug.

Speaking softly in his ear, she said, Mommy would be so proud of you Daddy. I am so sad that she is no longer with us.

In this moment of tender endearment, the great Viking warrior melted.

With these words from his daughter, he turned into a soft, gentle lamb, turned around, and gave her one big bear hug, and said, Yes, daughter, I also miss her, very much. Just three short years ago your mother was taken from us, and I will forever remember the day May 1st, 1667. I will always remember that day as if it were yesterday.

Julianne was now standing next to her father, and one could see that the top of her head was just a tad above his shoulders. This young woman, of twenty years of age, reached out, grabbed her father’s large hand with her long fingers, and wrapped his hands firmly around hers. While pulling on his arm, Julianne moved her foot around in the snow, playfully, like grooves in the snow from a plow.

Racing was another game that Julianne loved to play with her daddy. But of course, Lars would take short steps so that it would always end in a tie. Lars never humbled anyone, as he was an encourager, at the very least.

Julianne said to her father teasingly, Bet I could race you and beat you back to our home, and with a great smile, she said, I am sure you will like the big yummy breakfast that I fixed for you.

    Alright, girl, let’s get going!

One of the things that Lars relished most about his daughter was her inquisitive nature. She always wanted to know why. She would say, Why does it do this way daddy, or why does it not do it this way?

Lars would always take the time to answer questions in detail, or at least to the point of her satisfaction. He realized that there was so much to learn in this life. Lars knew that he had to take time, to teach his children as much as he could, so they would have the tools to achieve more in their life than he ever could.

One of the hallmarks of Lars’ teaching of his children included some of his Viking wisdom, and he would remind them often of these truths:

"Son, if you know how to do it, you had better do it!

Because, if I know you know how to do it, I will not.

So, young man get to doing it yourself, now!"

Being self-sufficient is one thing, but being on the team was another. Being a crew member, on Lars’ ship, meant that everyone had to work with and maintain, a high level of efficiency, because, the crew’s survival was dependent upon it. The alternative could be a great disaster.

As Julianne came out of the kitchen, she said with a commanding melodic voice, Daddy your breakfast is on the table. Come and get it, was the cry of this charming nightingale beauty.

Lars’ response was in military fashion, Yes ma’am, here I come, as ordered.

It was obvious that these two played off each other, but in a highly respectful way. It was also obvious that they had a deep love for one another, and that they could achieve, and share a magnificent relationship. As Julianne came out of the kitchen, it appeared as if she was walking on air while balancing plates in one hand, and carrying one man’s eating utensils in the other.

She gently placed her father’s plate in front of him and at the same time leaned over to kiss him on the cheek and said, Enjoy! I love you, Daddy.

You are just like your mother. How any man can be so blessed, is beyond me.

You know Daddy that I worry about you when you go to sea. I know that I have those two older brothers that I can depend on, but they live on the other side of the valley and are very busy being husbands, farmers, and herders. They have set up a very good life for themselves.

Julianne was now solemn, which was clear by her using the word father, as she said, Father, I pray for you all a time! I pray that you would become a farmer!

    What?

Daddy, every time you went out to sea, Mommy and I always feared that we would never see you again.

Well, here I am, and I will always return.

Could you guarantee me of that Daddy?

My dear daughter, there is no guarantee in this life.

I know Father, but you can minimize the dangers.

    Julianne this is going nowhere.

Julianne was quite concerned about her father’s upcoming voyage, so she was not about to drop this issue.

So, she replied, I propose this Daddy. I am as good as any of your crew, including your first mate, as you have said that yourself. I know the sea, and I know how to sail. I would be willing to bet that I could command your new ship.

Lars had a good hearty laugh over that one.

Daddy, you are aware that I know how to sail. You also know that I am the one that made those sails for you. Also, please remember that I am the one that went with you to sail the test vessel. Therefore, what makes you think that just because it is a bigger ship, that I cannot do it? I proved it to you, over and over again, didn’t I? Daddy, the matter is finished. So, can I assume that I am official, as of right now, a crew member on your vessel?

Well my dear Julianne, you have given me a very persuasive argument, but you convince me not. What could we possibly say to the men, that a woman was going to be a crew member? Never has a woman been a crew member before.

Well, Daddy what you did with the sails, and the building of this magnificent vessel, has never been done before either. Think about what I have to say. I can swing a battle-ax, I have my weapons, and you know that no man of your crew would ever try anything with me. Remember two years ago, when your third mate did, or I should say, attempted to do, to me?

Yes, I do remember. Julianne continued,

Also, I am sure you remember what happened to him.

Yes I do, I had to replace him.

Captain Larsnotsen, you are at that same juncture now, with the exception that there are three replacement crew members that you need, this time. Well then, it is settled, replied Julianne in a confident tone, and she added, so you only need two more crew members."

Oh my, oh my, your mother gave you a big portion of tenacity.

This is not stubbornness Daddy, this is the truth, and you know that deep down in your heart that I can measure up to anything the sea has to offer.

Young lady, if I, I repeat, if I do say that you can come along, as a crew member, then you will not leave the ship for any battles.

Then it is settled, as of today, as of right now, I am one of your crew members.

Julianne mischievously thought; we will settle this matter later, about whether I will be going into battle or not. Thanks Almighty God for the decision that Daddy and I made today.

The habit of giving thanks to God is something she started doing a few months before her mother lost her life in the avalanche.

About a year before the tragic avalanche took place, a man by the name of father Fearcur, came to their remote village, preaching the gospel according to Jesus Christ. Lars could not accept the idea of one God, one Spirit, and a Son, who was a God also. Lars just could not understand how there can be three Gods, but still be only one God. Julianne and Lars would have many conversations about the numerous gods of the Vikings.

But, how can you say three gods are one? Lars thought the whole idea was ridiculous, and it just did not make any sense to him at all. This new religion, that Lars’ late wife, and now his daughter had adopted, taught that you must forgive your enemies.

Blazes, Lars would say under his breath.

He would also say, How in the world can a Viking do well, loving and praying for his enemies.

Lars’ deep devotion and love for his wife were so great that he came into agreement with her, that she would practice her new religion without restriction. Julianne eventually accepted this new way of life, just as her mother did. Thus, he put up with the thanksgiving and prayers of his former wife, and now he was tolerating the same from his daughter.

So often, he would tell his wife, There is no way a seafaring Viking can accept this new found religion’s precepts. Lars concluded that since she did not accompany him on any of his voyages, that this new life would never get in his way.

Lars sternly told his wife, My father, my grandfather, and as a matter-of-fact, all of my ancestors were Vikings, and that is what I am, and that is what I will remain.

This was one of the few times Lars ever took a firm stand of finality with his wife. Her devotional love for Lars, along with the understanding of his ways, gave his wife hope that Lars would eventually come to Christ. She knew deep in her heart that Lars would eventually become a disciple of Christ Jesus.

After the tragic event of the avalanche: the loss of his beloved mate, Lars looked to the sky, and said, God Almighty are you not the provider, are you not the healer and protector, are you not the God who takes and forgives all sin? So why God, did you not protect my wife?

Lars waited a long time and then said, That’s what I thought, I will get no answer from this so called God.

In the process of raising his head, and with his long locks of red hair hanging out like a waterfall, he screamed into the heavens, Thor, Odin I am here; I am still the Viking you made me, and I will see you one day in Valhalla.

As Julianne said amen to her prayer of Thanksgiving the front door opened, and her two older brothers entered. These two young men were spitting images of each other, and as a matter of fact, of their father, Lars. Julianne’s brothers were identical twins and were eight years older than her. Julianne was quite startled at their entry, and she showed great excitement as they entered.

Immediately Julianne arose, ran to her brothers, and gave them both a great big hug and said, You both are bad boys because you have stayed away far too long. So, what brings you here today?

Both of them began to speak at the same time.

Lars looked firmly at the two sons and said, This is not like you two, calm down, sit down, and take some deep breaths.

Looking to Julianne, he said, Please get something hot to drink for these two.

Lars, looked intently at his sons, and he could see that there was a concern on their faces, he said, I know something is wrong, so tell me what is concerning you. Now, Johann you tell me what I need to know in a calm fashion, and give me just the relevant facts only, got it?

Johann proceeded to tell his father about the incident that occurred at the tavern, and said, "Father, as Odin is my witness, this is the truth! Eric and I are walking down the village street. We had just come from tending the sheep, and thought we would stop at the tavern, and have some breakfast. There were some people in the place, and just to the right of them was the infamous group of five. These five men are the sons of the gang leader, who has always and forever, been challenging you for the leadership of our village. Personally Father, I believe that they are just plain jealous of you. His sons are just like their father, and they are always ready to start an argument or a fight. I just do not think that these men have the ability to discuss anything with a civil tone.

You’re right son; I know that family well.

As I was saying, we passed their table, one of them said, ‘Your daddy is a big stupid idiot.’ Knowing who was speaking, and what these men were like, we felt it was prudent to keep walking. Again he said, ‘Your daddy is an idiot.’ The boat your father is building is useless, and it will never get out of this fjord. My brother just had to open his big mouth, and he just had to say, ‘And you think that your father is not an idiot.’ All five of them stood up and said in unison, ‘Those are fighting words, you cowards.’ Bosthell, you know the owner, ordered all of us outside, and said, ‘I will not have any trouble taking place in my place.’ I looked at him and said, ‘We’re not making any trouble sir. We came in here to eat, and that is all. Bosthell cried out, ‘Now get out, I do not care what this is all about, just get out, all of you!’ What else could we do father? When we left the tavern, the five of them followed us out to the street.

I think you did the right thing son to try and get away from those troublemakers.

Well Father we did try to avoid trouble, but that is when the real trouble started. That loggerhead renegade started cursing and said things against you. Both of us were still keeping our cool, and we continued to walk away. Then we heard someone say, ‘Your ugly mother is better off dead than to be around you lop heads.’ About that time, one of the five men took his knife out of his sheath He stepped forward, and said, ‘One of you, maybe both of you, are going to plead before you get home.’ ‘Plead what,’ I said, and he replied, ‘for your life you stupid sheepherder.’ He lunged forward with his knife aimed straight at Eric. Without thinking I took my ax, which was already in my hand, and swung it at him to protect myself. As I swung my ax, it collided with his hand, which held the knife. As a result, part of his hand went flying off. The man began screaming obscenities, followed by a sound of agony. About that time, the other four men rushed by, and Eric had his ax up and out. The man looked at me and said, ‘We will get even with you for this.’ The next thing I saw, and heard, was this scoundrel rogue turning and yelling, ‘Let’s get out of here.’ He was the one who called us cowards. As they were leaving, they ran up the street with their friend still on the ground.

What did you boys do then?

We both knelt down and helped him, even though he was our enemy. We wrapped his hand with his scarf. We both felt sorry about this and told him to go home. But before he left, I added, ‘You have just received your just reward.’ The last we saw of him he was muttering obscenities and crying like a baby, saying something to the effect, ‘I will get even with you.’ I said, ‘all right; I guess it will be just you, based on how your buddies stayed around to help you.’ By then Bosthell, the tavern owner, and some of the other people were standing around. Bosthell then said, Boys you did not deserve this, come inside and let me fix you something hot to drink and eat.’ He continued by saying, ‘I should have taken steps to keep you guys separated from that five useless donkeys, especially that tall one who is just like his father. That man and son are just alike, they cannot stand it when somebody has something that they do not have, and they are not willing to work for it. Those guys are just a bunch of have-nots. People like that will never be achievers because they are useless.’ Bosthell looked at us and said, ‘You boys are like your father, you are hard workers, you have always minded, and you tend to your own business.’ He also included some other good words about you father, and about us. He went on and on, like that preacher who came here. Then Bosthell looked at the crowd and said, ‘Those men are just, jealous. They do not want to do what it takes to get what they want. As for me, I didn’t do what I should have done in the first place. I hope that all of you will forgive me, for not doing what I should, and could have done. It does not help this particular matter any, but we do know that we cannot allow this type of thing to happen again.’ Eric and I then thanked him, but frankly I am a little embarrassed about what he had to say about us. Nonetheless, I did appreciate the accolades. After all, this happened we came straight here."

After a brief pause, Lars said, Sons, from what you have described to me, I believe that you did the right thing. I have said for a long time, that eventually the hatred and jealousy, of the boy’s father, would cross over the line of civility. You know boys someone always has to pay a price, far more than they would ever want to pay, for something like this. You two kept your emotions in check and reacted quite admirably considering the conditions at hand. I am sure that we have not heard the end of this from these men. They will try again, and they will want to strike a final blow because this is their style. However, be assured that the next time, they will not come to you face-to-face. So be prepared, as there’s no reasoning to what these rogues will do next. Because there is no wisdom in their actions, you will have an edge, and will win. However, in my book, you boys are already winners. So trust me, keep calm heads, and you will prevail over this situation.

At that, Julianne said, The best fight to win dear brothers, and this goes for you also Father, is the fight that you never fight. I know you still think Thor and Odin are on your side. However, please bear with me and let me ask God Almighty to intervene for you, and for all of us.

The men became silent, for something in them brought all to a realization, that just maybe Julianne had something, they needed.

Julianne Marie lowered her head, raised her two hands as high as she could, and prayed aloud. I pray to you, God Almighty, creator of the universe, and I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. I pray that your wisdom, Father God, will fill our minds, our souls, and our hearts to make the right decisions, decisions Lord that will glorify you. I pray your love will fill the hearts of my brothers as they think on and reflect on this incident today. Most of all Father, I pray your joy into their hearts, as well. For sure Lord, I pray for your forgiveness for this awful day. Lord, I pray for the injured man, that his hand, his mind, and his heart are healed. And I pray Lord that the other four men are convicted of their sins. I pray Lord for your loving arms to wrap around all of five of these rogues, and also around all of us, in the same way, you wrapped your loving arms around your son Jesus. For it is your love Lord, that washes us clean, and heals us of our sins. The blood of your son Jesus Christ was shed for our sins, and we are all healed because of the stripes that he had to suffer, to make us whole. We glorify you Lord, and we praise you for the deliverance of our wayward ways, and iniquities. Also, we thank you for forgiving our sins, and from the penalty of eternal judgment. I also ask, dear Father in heaven, that you give us wisdom and revelation, to do your will. I plead this in the precious blood of your blessed son Jesus, and for your glory. Going forward, we are under your protection and your provision. Father, we look to you for your help Lord God Almighty. I pray for all of us that we have eyes to see, and ears to hear what you have to say. Above all, I pray that you would help us to be obedient, and then, and only then, are we blessed. I thank you, Lord, for protecting my two brothers from harm. I pray that you know what my brother’s needs are. I pray you anoint my father, myself, and my two brothers, that we know your will for us, and most importantly do it. I pray Lord that you God Almighty, will continually protect all of us from the many dangers that we are aware of and the ones that we are unaware. I am thankful Lord, for I know you hear my prayers, and I know that I believe, by my faith, that you have given me my salvation. Thank you for hearing this prayer Lord, and thank you for the prayers that you have already answered. I pray these things in the precious name of Christ Jesus. Amen.

Eric came over to his sister, put his massive arms around her, and said, I am overwhelmed. I have never heard a more powerful prayer. I must tell you how much it means to me. Oh, how I love you, my dear sister.

Johann and Lars answered simultaneously, Yes! I feel it to Julianne.

With a great smile and holy laughter, Julianne ran her fingers up through her long blonde hair as she was swishing around like a ballerina.

Julianne said, Do you see how the three of you reacted, or I should say acted? The three of you responded in the same way. Yes, in the same way, and that tells me that my spirit, through the Holy Ghost, was talking to your spirits! Because we know that God is truth and Spirit. He is one Spirit, dwelling in all of us, praise the Lord.

    CHAPTER 2

    FINNIS REVEALS HIS GENUINE COLORS

H ey you two, I suppose you want something to eat since you were rudely thrown out of the tavern today, Julianne said mischievo usly.

A big hearty Yes, was the reply back from Eric.

Then Johann jumped into the conversation and said, I’m so hungry that I could eat that whole stag that you have hanging outside in the back.

What, came the surprised reply from Julianne, then she added, Daddy did you bag a deer and put it outside?

I have not been hunting for quite some time Julianne. So, this just can’t be, so you two must have been seeing things.

No Father Julianne interrupted, I saw the stag, and a large one, I might add. There was some hunting gear lying beside the stag. It was hanging, skinned, and it appeared to have been bled out.

I saw it too, said Eric.

Now their curiosity had reached its peak, so they simultaneously rushed toward the back door. As the door opened, they quickly peered to the backside of the place, where the slaughtering of the stag had taken place. Hanging there was a massive buck, and it was in the process of being cut up. The antlers were to the left of the table, and they were obviously from a large size stag, indeed.

Lars thought; these antlers must have at least ten points. There is going to be much meat that will need to be cured.

As they stood there examining the stag, they were startled to see Julianne’s husband, Finnis. He was was wasting no time in slaughtering the stag. Finnis was a craftsman at this trade, and he was also a master hunter. He would spend many days hunting, but in the process he neglected his commitment as a husband to Julianne. It was a major concern to Lars that his son-in-law was not the husband he should be to Julianne. Lars showed a rare posturing of emotion when it came to dealing with Finnis.

Lars never admitted it, but from the very beginning he was opposed to Finnis being in the family. Finnis was just not a good fit. Lars would often make the point that Finnis was like a puzzle piece that did not fit into the picture.

Here he was again, just returning from a hunting trip, and he couldn’t even bother to go in and tell the family he was back. Finnis tended to be somewhat of a loner, and he seldom spoke much.

His way of going about things was unusual, and he would say, Whatever I do is my business, and furthermore, how I do it is certainly none of your business.

How Finnis managed to be a crew member on Lars’ vessels was a dichotomy in itself, as he was an outstanding sailor. Finnis could take a command and complete it with total obedience. Lars could always count on Finnis to complete the assigned task to a very high standard. But things were quite different at home, as he would maintain a low profile, ignoring Julianne, and making her feel like he didn’t even exist. Lars was especially disturbed by the way Finnis went about ignoring his wife. The discussion on why Julianne never bore a child was certainly speculative to say the very least.

When Finnis was on board Lars’ ship, he was all Viking, but on land his manhood was certainly a controversial subject. So, on one hand his manhood could be questioned. But on the other hand, his ability to hunt and bring back a stag, or some other wild animal, almost every time was indeed remarkable. Finnis could be counted on to provide a stag and other animal skins. However, these things were just about all that he did provide.

Lars, looking very stern, but in a most controlled way began to speak. Finnis, for three years now, you have been a member of this family. Oh yes, I do have to give you credit, as you do provide a considerable amount of meat and skins for our family. Finnis, I know that you like to hunt, but as far as I’m concerned it is because you have refused to do anything else of value. You forget you are a member of this family, and with that honor come additional responsibility. There’s more to do Finnis, than what you just like to do, and we all have to work together for the greater good of this family. As far as I’m concerned, you are not willing to do anything other than what pleases you, and that Finnis is just not very much.

Julianne thought; well this is the first time that Daddy has ever spoke like that to Finnis. I would say that Daddy got the best of him on this one! Finnis, you may want to start being an attentive husband.

It appeared that Lars was about to say something else, but instead he took one big deep breath and he blurted out, This discussion is useless, so let’s go inside and be a family. Julianne will fix something for the boys and you also Finnis and we will break bread with a family. Come on Finnis, I accepted you in this family three years ago, unconditionally, so I would like for you to join us.

As Lars turned to go into the house, Finnis said, with just a hint of sarcasm in his voice, Thank you, but you all go ahead. I had breakfast early this morning at the village tavern.

Julianne was clearly upset by Finnis’ reply. Without hesitation, she turned back with an angry look and said to her husband, with a very scolding tone in her voice, Were you at the tavern when my brothers were attacked?

Oh sure, but I figured that they could handle the problem themselves. I was finishing my meal and about to leave the tavern when the five men goaded your brothers into a fight. I didn’t want to get involved in your brother’s problems.

One day my dear husband you will meet your match, and there will be no one, including myself, who will be there to help you, in your time of need. You, my dear husband, will be standing alone.

I do not need anyone to help me, Julianne. It is just me with my bow and battle ax, and my shield. I am a Viking warrior so I can stand alone against anyone, at anyplace, and anytime.

Lars had been listening to Finnis’ conversation with Julianne, and he was becoming angrier by the moment. Now, he was disgusted, as he had never heard Finnis talk like this before.

Lars thought; I need to take on three more crew members, including Finnis, but I don’t know how I can trust him to be a part of my crew. Maybe I need Julianne on the team, along with three more men.

With these thoughts, Lars prayed to his god, Thor! If you can hear me, please help me now, as this is becoming quite troublesome. My family means everything to me, and so does my crew. This whole ordeal, Thor, has to be stopped.

Julianne, along with her two brothers, and Lars went back to the house. In the meantime, Finnis turned his knife in his hand, as he violently cut into the hanging dear, ripping at its flesh in the process. As his blade penetrated, it came to a sudden halt against one of the stag’s bones. The force was so great that Finnis’ hand continued its motion downward, with his arm jutting into his backside.

As Lars watched Finnis from the window he thought; this is a display of the most vitriolic hatred that I ever witnessed, and I have seen a lot of hatred in past battles as a Viking warrior. But this act of pure anger, strongly suggests that Finnis is a troubled man indeed.

As Lars stepped back into the kitchen, he could not get the anger, demonstrated by Finnis, out of his mind.

Lars thought; I would be extremely lax to place Finnis in a leadership role since he can’t seem to control his emotions. A person in leadership must take control of his emotions if he expects to make decisions that will benefit the entire crew.

Lars realized that it was paramount that a leader takes control of his emotions and that it is especially important while at sea. He also realized that sooner or later it was going to be necessary for Finnis to be replaced.

Lars continued his thought process, I cannot justify leaving Finnis behind because he is a man of vengeance. Therefore, I will take him on this last trip.

Lars reasoned that since he had made the decision to bring Julianne along on the voyage, that this just might be the counterbalance needed to resolve the three troubling situations, with Julianne, her brothers, and now Finnis. At this point, everyone in the room was totally silent. No one wanted to respond to this most unbecoming behavior by Finnis.

Julianne, breaking the silence, spoke first by saying, Father I believe we need to saddle up the horses and ride down to take a look at how the ship is coming along.

Julianne was hoping that she would get a positive response to her suggestion. She just felt that it was time to change the subject and what better way than to do something that was dear to her father’s heart.

Lars’ love for ship building was far more than just the pleasure of designing and building a great ship, but it had become his outlet for the tremendous loss that he had endured with the passing of his dear wife. Since her passing, Lars had put his heart and soul into the designing and building of this ship. This endeavor had become a shift in his lifestyle.

Lars was beginning to perk up with Julianne’s suggestion, and he said to her, This is the best idea that I’ve heard for quite some time. Let’s go out to the barn to get the two Palominos ready, and we’ll get out of here.

So, off to the barn the two of them went. Lars and Julianne were leaving with a great sense of urgency. At this point, they just wanted to get out of the house, saddle up the horses, and put all the anger behind them.

As they entered the barn, they could see four stalls on the right. There were two beautiful palominos occupying the first two stalls. It appeared to them that they would need a ladder to get into the saddle. The horses had to be at least seventeen hands high. Their heads were raised high, and the breath of their nostrils was clearly visible, as it was still quite cold. Their eyes showed great anticipation, their chests were bulging out, and the muscles in these horses showed that they were lean, firm and that they had super strength.

Lars took the horse out of the first stall, and Julianne went to the second stall. In the last two stalls were two other horses that were lifting their feet up and down, and whinnying as if to say, We want to go also.

Each of them grabbed bridles and proceeded to bring the horses out of the stalls. They tied them to one of the posts and proceeded to saddle up. These were well-groomed horses, and they were always well inspected before they were put in their respective stalls each day.

Lars went about looking them over closely. He wanted to make sure there was nothing to hinder them as they rode. Everything Lars did was in order, and he never left anything undone or to chance. To Lars, there was no such thing as a shortcut.

He would always say, Shortcuts are a one-way street to disaster.

Throughout the years, Lars had taught this to his daughter, and she was a diligent student of the master teacher.

As they brought the horses out of the barn, Julianne said, I’m going to go back and tell Finnis what we’re about to do, and invite him to come along with us.

If you feel this is the right thing to do, then by all means do it.

Handing the reins over to her father, she ran into the house and headed straight for the kitchen.

As Julianne entered the kitchen, she found Finnis standing at the window, with his back turned to her.

Finnis, not realizing that Julianne had entered the room was angrily speaking to himself out loud, and said, Wouldn’t you know it, they all left me behind, with no food on the table, and didn’t even tell me where they were going, or what they were going to do. This family totally ignores me! I was cursed the day I married you, Julianne.

In hearing all this, Julianne stepped back into the front room, walked over to the door, opened it silently, and then slammed it hard.

Then she proceeded to call out to Finnis, Are you in here honey?

    Yes, I’m here.

Oh good, I want to invite you to join us. Father and I are going to ride down to the ship to see how things are going. We, and she emphasized we, would like for you to join us, and make it a threesome.

Finnis, now a bit calmed down replied without thinking, which is something he rarely did, Nah.

Then, in a tone of a discontented growl he replied, I’ve got better things to do with my time, and besides, who wants to watch a bunch of puppets cut wood for the ship?

Finnis, those are the men that you will be saving with your leadership and knowledge, so how can you call them puppets? Those men experienced sailors, and you know it. If they didn’t do this work, there would be no ship, and you would be stuck here chasing stag. Is that what you want, to just be out there, all by yourself, chasing, chasing, and always chasing?

Finnis responded after an awkward silence by saying, I know that I will be sailing with your father, and I know that I will be one of the crew. Therefore, I will leave everything up to those who choose to work on the ship, but please leave me out of it! I have nothing more to say, Julianne!

    Well then, good.

This was the first time that Julianne had ever responded disrespectfully to her husband. She immediately repented from the depths of her heart and mind. Then she immediately asked God to forgive her for not obeying His commandments. Julianne was repenting of being disrespectful to her husband, who was the head of the household.

She said to God, I need to be respectful Lord, to Finnis, no matter what the circumstances are.

This was a very disturbing situation, and Julianne had responded with negative emotion.

She thought; I am so happy that daddy didn’t see me being disrespectful to Finnis.

As Julianne reflected on this incident, she realized that these are the times when you have to take every thought captive, and control your emotions. It is during these times that one must rely on the Holy Ghost to do the talking.

As she was preparing to leave, she said to Finnis, I will probably be away from home all day. In the cupboard are some covered dishes full of food that I have prepared for you. I’m sure there is enough to hold you until I return.

As Julianne went out the front door, she did say, in a very respectful way, I will see you Finnis. More than likely it will be after dark when I return. When I get back, I will do anything. What I am saying is that I can to take care of you, and I will fix you food, or whatever it is you need.

Finnis, with a very sharp tone in his voice, replied Yeah, yeah.

Lars was already in the saddle and holding the reins for Julianne he said, He refused your invitation didn’t he?

Yes, he did refuse to come along.

Some things just never seem to change. Oh well, let’s get going. We have so many more things that we can be doing instead of talking about this.

They both dug their heels into the side of the horses, and they responded with a quick step, and off they went. There were tall alpine’s scattered throughout the area. As they were winding around them, they came upon some impressive boulders. At this point, they both let loose of their reins, for these horses knew the way, and were surefooted, as all the horses were in these parts.

They continued until they came to an area that was strangely open. This area did not have a tree nor a bush, but just short grass. As they came into this area, which was more than one hundred yards in length, they sped up to a gallop. As they came to the other side of this area, they pulled back on their reins, and their horses slowed to a walk. The pathway, in front of them, became quite narrow. Looking off directly to the right, they could see nothing but space as they came upon a precipice, which was, at least, three hundred feet deep. As they continued along, they came upon a very narrow trail, which appeared to have washed away, presumably with the winter snows. At this point, the trail had become so narrow that it was about the width of the horses.

Lars, for the first time, spoke and said, When we have another storm we may not have this trail anymore. I’m not sure I look forward to that since it cuts three or maybe four miles off of our trip to the boat.

Daddy, I’m not sure we need to concern ourselves about this path because we may never have to use it again.

That bit of wisdom got Lars’ attention because he knew she was a wise lady, as well as a visionary. Julianne had this ability to see things that did not exist, and it wasn’t just her imagination.

Lars said, Are you saying that this path is going to wash away, and we will always have to take a long way down?

Yes, this just might be the last time we’ll ever come down this way, and I will leave it at that.

About that time the trail tripled in size, which was comforting, even though they both had confidence in the abilities of their horses. At this point in their journey, Lars and Julianne were enjoying the magnificence of the fjord, and the mountains that were way back in the background. As the sun peeked over the cliffs of the fjord, it revealed the lakes with their jagged cliffs. In the distance, they could see the tops of the cliffs. They were covered with snow, and they could see a major avalanche being born on the other side of the lake. It was a long way across the fjord, but by now they could hear the thunderous roar of a massive snow movement. As the snow traveled across the water, it was echoing a sound that told this Norsemen that the ice breakup would be coming soon. This was like sweet music to their ears.

The open sea was calling them home, so they were quite anxious to get to the ship, and to prepare it for its maiden launch. The anticipation of getting to the boat was an adrenaline rush to the two of them. The horses apparently felt the adrenaline rush as well and instinctively went right into a gallop. Within fifteen minutes, they were at their destination. As a two of them rode up to the mooring dock, they observed several men working to get the ship ready to sail.

Lars would frequently say, This is the ship of the future, and we are already in it.

Then he would reflectively add, One man sees the future, and before anyone realizes it, he is in it and then everyone says, ‘how did you do that?’

With this question would come a natural response from Lars, Well, you have to look far beyond the mountain ranges if you want to know the answer to that question.

    CHAPTER 3

    RUBY EYES – THE FUTURE

T he ship looked as if it was ready to be launched, and what a magnificent piece of workmanship it was. Each man was as proud of the vessel as Lars was.

When Lars was able to get all of their attention he said to them, You men are my crew, and I couldn’t be prouder of you. Of course, I still need to hire on two more men, plus Finnis.

When Lars said Finnis, it was completely obvious that he was less than complimentary, from the tone of his voice.

Julianne, breaking up the conversation, said, Come on Daddy, I want to feel what it’s like to walk the deck of the ship where I’m going to be a crew member.

Please, Julianne this is not the time for anybody to know that you will be aboard this ship, as one of my crew members. You must leave it to me to tell the men. So, please Julianne, do not forget what I ask of you.

Father, please accept my apology. I know that I am allowing my excitement to show too much.

That’s my Julianne, no harm done.

About that time, John, his foreman of the project, came forth with an exuberant cry, Captain, give me two more days of fitting and we will have the masthead on by the third day. I expect the masthead to be brought here by cart anytime now.

The masthead was an important part of any Viking vessel.

Julianne inquired about the masthead, and Lars began to explain. This masthead is not going to be the typical dragon head that is on so many of the vessels. The eyes of the dragon are being constructed from large jewels.

One of the crew members interrupted and asked Lars, Why are you using rubies for their eyes?

Well, because these Jewels are huge, and they are crafted in a unique way so that they will shine and sparkle like the stars in the night sky. I want this ship to have a special masthead, which is something that no one has ever done before. It is my desire for this boat to shine and sparkle as she glides through the waters.

At this point Julianne said, "Father is it too late to have something different than a dragon? I still think a dragon seems evil. I would think a great eagle’s head would give such prestige to the vessel. We all know what the eagle stands for greatness. Eagles are the masters of the skies."

Well, my dear daughter that’s a brilliant idea. When we get back I just might do that, but, for now, I have already commissioned it to be done as a dragon’s head. You know that John said it more than likely is going to show up today.

Julianne, taking deep breaths, resigned herself to sharing the ship with what she would consider a demonic force.

As Julianne pondered these things, she immediately prayed from the depths of her heart, God Almighty would you please dispel any evil spirits off of the ship, that this dragon head will represent. I also ask Lord for you to cast all the spirits of evil into the pit, bind it there, and in some way make it so that no one would take notice of this masthead.

Lars, sensing that something was going on in Julianne’s head, said, Young lady let me remind you, one more time, that when you are aboard this ship, that I am not your father. I am the Captain, and what the Captain says has to be followed. You cannot approach me, anytime you please, or for any reason, as you would your father. Julianne, you must adhere to this condition without question. You must promise me Julianne, that you will not approach me in this manner from now on. If you can’t follow this rule, then you will not set one foot on board this ship when we set sail.

Father, I completely understand what you have said, and I will obey your wishes.

    Well then, good,

About that time, coming from the opposite direction down the road, came two reindeer harnessed to a rather large cart. Reindeer pulling carts was not an unusual sight because they were often used to pull carts.

As they headed into the dock, the driver who was well known as a woodcarver of exquisite artistic skill, shouted, Lars you’re going to see one of the best pieces of work, if not the very best that I’ve ever done. This masthead is a beauty and what you asked me to do turned out magnificently. You’re going to love it!

Having said this, the driver jumped out of the seat and said, Come over here quickly, because I can’t wait to show this to you.

In the back of the cart was a large mound, which was covered by a top cloth.

The driver yelled to one of the men, Get over here.

He grabbed the other side and said, On my command, pull up and back.

With that said the task was completed, and there staring straight up was the dragon that the artist had created. One could not help but to notice the eyes immediately.

The eyes were made of large red gemstones that were more beautiful than anyone could have possibly imagined, especially in this godforsaken masthead; thought Julianne.

Lars stood there in awe, as he placed his hands on the nose of the dragon’s head, and gently caressed it down its muzzle, up onto its head, and then grabbed one of the ears. Lars began shaking the artist’s hand, and every word that came out of his mouth was nothing but complimentary.

Lars said with a great deal of passion in his voice, Yes you’re right, this is one of the finest pieces of woodworking artwork that I have ever seen in these parts. Once we have it set up there, on the bow of the ship, this vessel will be ready to launch.

The head of the dragon was quite a colorful sight, with its reds, greens, and yellows brightly shining. The dragon head glistened from the multitude of colors, as the sun was shining directly upon it. But at this point it was still just a dragon head without a body. But soon this magnificent Viking ship, designed and built by Lars and his crew, would be the new body of this dragon head.

From the neck down the dragon had several square pieces of wood that looked like pieces that would fit into a puzzle.

Lars saw the large pieces of wood and was curious as to why the dragon would be mounted on the ship in such a fashion, so he asked the artist, Why did you design it this way? Wouldn’t it be just as easy to cut it off and tie it in, like we’ve done it in the past?

The artist was quick to respond to Lars observation and replied, No sir, this dragon is so big that I had to bring special cut wood pieces to secure it properly. Once the wood pieces are fitted in, we can glue and tie them in place. This dragon head is very weighty, so by doing it this way I can be sure that this monster of a dragon head will be securely attached to your ship. I would venture to say that if we did it in the traditional way, it would require ribs all the way around, and you would lose the sleekness of the dragon’s neck. Now, I know this wasn’t part of our agreement, but I will do the fitting and cutting where necessary. Just consider it a part of what I’m doing for you. Sir, I believe you are going to go to some exotic places, and as you said, ‘places that no one has ever been before.’ When people see this masthead, on this magnificent ship that you built, the whole world is going to know who Captain Larsnotsen is.

My notoriety is not my intent. I built this ship to fulfill a purpose, and I prayed to Thor that other people would use my model as a forerunner for their shipbuilding.

But Sir, this is your idea, it’s your vision, and you are the one who had this ship designed and built. Shouldn’t you be rewarded by people who copy from your ideas?

Definitely not! I was given these ideas from someone greater than myself, and I make no claim to them. Yes, I did envision the ship that you see before you. And yes, I believed in the idea, and yes I did design and build the vessel.

Lars, with finality in his voice, continued, That Sir Artist is what we should all do.

    Sir that sounds real good.

That was the end of that conversation.

The artist wanted to make sure that he and Lars were on the same page, so he asked him, Our agreement is that you are going to pay me, correct?

Yes, that is the way it works!

You know, giving it away for free, is not a reward for me.

You’re right, when you’re done securing the dragon head to the bow, then you will be paid in full.

Julianne thought; yes it will get paid. I am sure that daddy will give him even more than they agreed upon because that is what he always does. Being generous has done more good for daddy than anybody will ever know. He has always known what seed time and harvest meant. Daddy has been scriptural in so many ways, and he is completely unaware that he is doing it. I am so happy that he does what is right, even if he doesn’t realize that he is doing it God’s Way.

Julianne prayed out loud, Lord God Almighty, I pray you move upon my father. I pray that soon that he will be set free from all of these insane notions. I pray that you, and you alone Father God, would be the light of his path and the source of his strength and wisdom. I pray Father God that he sees you in your true light, as a Savior, provider, and master teacher. Yes, Lord, I pray that my father, who is of this earth, receives your Son, who is in the heavens above, as his personal Savior.

After this had taken place, they began to unharness the reindeer from the cart. Four burly men took hold of the cart and began to pull it to the end of the dock. The block and tackle was already set in place on the forward yard arm. One of the crewmen was straddled across the arm, and he proceeded to lower
