INSURGENTS HQ
Mogadishu - Hotel
The Staccato blasts of C4 detonated explosions followed the Navy Seals beyond the rusted iron gates, blowing them off their hinges, as the blast pressured sand scoured the faces and clothing of the running Seals laden with weapons, bagged laptops, Satphones and encrypted intelligence paperwork, some scattered and shredded by the blast from a dropped bag.
The basement walls fractured sporadically along the wall, blowing bricks, reinforcing rods, concrete and stored incendiary munitions, gunpowder, barrels of pitch, and phosphorous flares into the tunnel between the brick pillars. Projectiles embedding in barrels and broken timber posts supporting the tunnel complex.
Abu Shekau’s round dark wet face rose from the shallow well, his thick lips spitting and coughing water, sand, dust and fumes, from where the explosive pressure had flung him. He reached the smoking body of Omar Kareem, screaming with pain from pitch and phosphor burns. Shekau threw a bucket of sandy water from the well, over Kareem, washing and dislodging the burning pitch, and phosphorous with a reinforcing rod, pulled from a nearby barrel.
Abu Shekau, in his wet dusty camouflage uniform, grunted with the exersion as he raised the semi clad uniformed, unconscious smoking form across his massive shoulders, staggered and called to his escort of body guards, and medic to help man handle Kareem to the motorized rail trolley in the tunnel, used to transport equipment, and food supplies from the port of Mogadishu, on the underground rail to the hotel that Shekau and his men had arrived on, after securing the stolen trucks at the port.
Abu Shekau’s Sikorski chopper pilot responded at the sight of the fighters and the still, bandaged form on the stretcher, by starting the chopper turbines, whining the Sikorski to full power as Abu Shekau arrived with the rest of his disparate team of raggedy fighters in the stolen trucks.
The pressganged ilclad boy fighters from a variety of African backgrounds, and villages, run the stretchered form of a barely recognisable Omar Kareem to the Sikorski, securing the stretchered twitching bandaged form with straps over the silver insulating cover. The first aid kit of saline fluids, bandages, cannulas and syringes, laid out by the failed medical student, boy fighter who expertly applied cannulas for the fluids drip, hung above on the chair frame of the ascending Sikorski Chopper.
The trucks would follow by road to the Ethiopian border, eventually to Cameroun.
The stolen trucks splashed noisily into the enclosed Hospital compound forming a protective circle around the Hospital perimeter. The Kalashnikov armed fighters had finally arrived to support Abu Shekau at the Hospital, the older experienced fighters scrambled down from the trucks taking up strategic positions around the hospital compound in the steamy Monsoon rain.
The sweating, alarmed dark face, of the white dust coated Cameroun Doctor refocused his eyes behind thick lenses, suffering from the Monsoon humidity, and motioned to the formidable Abu Shekau with his stethescope. He will need great care, the pitch cauterized his knife inflicted wounds, stopping the loss of blood. That saved his life. But the knife wounds severed his manhood, his right leg will have muscle wastage, from a cut femoral artery. Pitch sealed that wound, but damaged the tissue. He will sit to pee, like a woman. I am sorry he needs reconstructive surgery, we have poor hospital equipment here. He will need European specialist doctors.
Explained the pale sweating dark faced Cameroun Doctor, peering through his thick lensed glasses, and gripping his stethoscope for comfort like a Catholic would a rosary. When can he be moved to a new hospital Doc, with your medical supplies of course?
Demanded the short haired, dark round faced Shekau for his mutilated friend. Tomorrow will be OK.
Smiled the doctor tentatively, hoping they would leave sooner. Fighters, we leave with Kareem tomorrow, prepare the trucks, and my Chopper to fly Kareem to Libya and later Turkey.
Boomed Abu Shekau, happy to be on the move, a plan forming in his mind. Two fighters had already removed the surprised Doctors head with their long bush knives, his slumped form still clutching his stethoscope as he slipped none to gracefully to the floor.
No one must know or suspect there new destination intentions, important lives depended on the utmost secrecy. Abu Shekau did not bother to wipe the blood spatter from his camouflage uniform as he left the room to marshal his fighters to strip the Hospital of medical equipment, drugs, bandages and field dressing first aid kits for future use. Screams were coming from the nurse’s quarters, as Abu marched along the green painted corridor towards the noise. He shouldered his way into the room to see several half clad nurses, weeping holding onto torn clothing, to cover naked breasts and exposed flesh. The screaming was from another semi clad nurse being held face down by two fighters laughing at her distress, as another fighter was pumping her vigorously from behind in a drug fuelled frenzy, as he slapped at her broken leg, hanging off the bed. They had broken her legs for resisting, her screams were from the inflicted pain upon her broken legs.
Abu Shekau bellowed like a wounded Caribou, as he dragged the offending fighter from the screaming nurse. Load the the medical supplies on the trucks with the others. Bring a nurse for later medical assistance for the medic Assam, pick a beautiful one for entertainment also?
Commanded Abu Shekau to his cowering fighters, caught out like naughty children.
SUNSHINE COAST - AUSTRALIA
I had just had my staple porridge breakfast when my mobile rang. Erik’s German accented voice asked. How I was?
Burkenfeld have contacted FCS, we have a containerized Water Treatment Plant to install and Commission at Mazar airport. Can you assist with installation and Commissioning?
Asked Erik, not one to waste words. How many people do we have Erik?
Just us two, maybe Mario for electrical, we need your CV also to submit to Burkenfeld for approval.
Erik finished hurriedly. OK, I can submit my documents today, how soon to liftoff?
I enquired. Once approved Mr. Leyh will send your e-tickets as usual next week, probably about 7 days, there could be some equipment training in Germany also, OK?
Thought Erik aloud. I will run it by the wife, but it should be OK I think.
Sounding more positive than I felt, after the last traumatic stint in Afghanistan. I felt I had got over the events relatively unscathed. We needed the cash to pay the mortgage, nothing is cheap in this so called lucky country Erik, you are better off living with your girlfriend in the Philippines.
With that Erik rang off, with a promise to meet me at Mazar airport, Northern Afghanistan next week.
The e-tickets and standard contract in German arrived Friday night, with departure Tuesday the following week. I got the e-mailed contract translated using Microsoft’s programme, changed the rate and arranged leave for a flying visit to my already booked dentist, in the Philippines. Sent it back with my CV for approval. Not many Aussie contractors with Afghanistan on their CVs’? Looks like I would miss celebrating another Aussie Christmas and New Year with our friends? Such is the life of a FI/FO Aussie contractor.
Luckily we traversed the Bruce Highway without the usual crash holdups to the Brisbane International Airport, for my flight to Afghanistan via Chengdu, China, Dubai, and Istanbul’s Attaturk Airport, to Mazar E. Sharif, in Northern Afghanistan. Home to NATOs’ Camp Marmal Air Base.
The nightmare began at the China Southern Airlines check-in counter, Brisbane Airport, after I submitted my passport and e-ticket documents. I had no visa for Afghanistan. After ringing my boss Erik, I handed the phone to the check-in supervisor, for them to argue the toss. Terrorist attacks in Aussie (Man Monis, at the Lindt Café siege) last year had changed the security checks and travel rules for ever for travellers to hotspots. I always get my visa from Kabul after I arrive. With my intractable Boss and the Check-in supervisor wrangling through the details to allow me to fly, my family and myself had to wait for a compromise.
My NATO pass had expired last visit. My boss faxed that with my picture through, showing I was a legit NATO contractor. My wife and son did not need this wrinkle at 3.20 am Tuesday morning on a school day, still having an hour and a half’s drive back up the Bruce to the wonderful Sunny Coast. I was able to say an emotional goodbye at 4.30 am with my China Southern Airlines boarding pass in hand. I had also missed breakfast at the Qantas Club Lounge, fortunately customs were more forgiving. I had no problems heading for the departure Gate to join the boarding queue. My Military backpack was my carry-on baggage. Next stop Chengdu Airport, Mainland China.
As Qantas is allied to China Southern Airlines, my Qantas Club Card gave me an empty seat next to me for my 13 hr flight. With luck this flight will not be like my Qantas, Red eye Jedhi flights I used to take to Perth, when working for BHP Iron Ore years ago in Port Hedland. I could lay down and sleep later after checking out the latest movies. I always found it difficult to sleep on long haul flights.
CHINA
Chengdu Airport
I managed a couple of hours sleep, before Chengdu. The uniformed English speaking, female Chinese terminal staff helpfully guided us to disembark, efficiently to the transfer lounge, passport control was a formality as I was waiting for my flight to Dubai. Habit has got me checking the arrivals board, as gate changes happen regularly. We had three changes, plus a three hour wait as the Emirates flight was delayed. I was worried about making my connection to Istanbuls Attaturk Airport, Turkey as I had to normally change Terminals in Dubai. As DXB to Bagram airbase always leaves from Terminal 3. I was a seasoned traveller to Afghanistan and knew the ropes Expats were put through, with Queues and baggage weights. At Bagram ground crews split the passengers into groups, going to Kandahar, Mazar and Kabul. Then board Beechcraft 1900 flights. This had been my life, my third year in Afghanistan.
But this time I was to transfer to Emirates to Istanbul. I always text my boss, about delays, and my whereabouts on new routes, so he knew what plane to meet. If I was to be up all night, so should he be. Although I had my Balkh Airport pass, I was cautious. I also had a multiple entry visa for Istanbul Airport, as this was becoming the travel hub to Mazar E. Sharif in Northern Afghanistan. As a contractor FCS provided flights, quickest and cheapest route, accommodation, and mess facilities at the NATO base camp.
I was hoping to catch up with my work mates, and German officers I had previously worked for. Most of them were on rotating rosters after completing their German Military Service, it was back to Deutschland, for decommissioning, or signing on for more service. Some were career soldiers.
We had a crack team of German Special Forces soldiers in a separate compound at Camp Marmal. These guys trained regularly in the German Gym. Some tough looking characters, bearded, big strong units prepared for combat 24/7.
They would also take out the Osh Kosh troop carriers with 50 calibre machine gun, mean looking Fuchs (Fox), fast armoured patrol vehicle with 50 calibre machine gun on board, and quad bikes. They would be joined by the CH53 Helicopters and Apache attack choppers in the mountains and foothills of the Marmal Mountains, for Military exercises on a regular basis.
INSURGENCEY MEETING
Cairo – Hotel Sevastopol – Nile
Salaam my friends, greets the black bearded Muhammed Haqiri, Taliban Commander and Representative, welcome to our ISIS and Al Qa’ ida brothers, please refresh yourselves from your secret journeys, with dates, and our lamb delicacies. As most of you already know each other, I will begin, our usual host Kolonel Omar Kareem has suffered major injuries, in a fire fight at his Head Quarters, and will not be with you brothers.
Abu Shekau contacted the ISIL Council, Kareem has been badly wounded, and is just barely alive, having survived an American raid in Mogadishu
intoned the Pakul hatted Taliban commander Haqiri. Allahu Akbah!
cried the assembled dissident throng.
You will remember the Americans have the playing cards with high ranking ISIL targets, for capture or kill, as in the assaults on Saddam in Desert Storm. We must be careful of the great Satan, and US desperation to look competent on the world stage of Warfare. We are fortunate that the Elections are a distraction for the next few months in America.
Commented Haqiri.
I am your temporary host, welcome to the turmoil of the Middle East my friends, as he removed his brown Pakul hat.
We have lost several high profile comrades, I have a proposal which will consolidate our interests, which have the potential for better results. If we could work together, and save our traditional arguing for factional supremacy till later my friends, we are after all equal partners here, are we not?" Smiled Haqiri deferentially, pleased Kareem was indisposed and warming to his subject matter.
Who are you to make these decisions for Omar kareem?
asked the dark haired, hook nosed, Al Qa’ida spokesman angrily, always against the status quo.
The ISIL Council are aware of developments?
Came the questioning ISIL Commander in qmis (shortened shirt) and shalwar pants (baggy trousers), abrupt response.
Before I proceed I would welcome our friends from Qatar and the funds they bring, I and Al Hamza as always, need your joint approval on more funding, for arms and ammunition, and the usual utmost secrecy, the Council acknowledge a possible reorganisation at this time.
Murmured Haqiri, ignoring the ISIL Commander.
I will not reveal the strategy yet, but you have all witnessed the results of funding approvals on our achievements, in Syria, the capture of Palmyra, strife in Egypt, insurgency in Iraq, Afghanistan, in Puntland, and Somalia with kidnappings in Nigeria and Cameroun, Mali and adjoining countries?
Allahu Akbah!" cried the assembled Councillors with passion.
"Our plans to take this further, are all working well, but working together, we can do better than in any of our local skirmishes with NATO in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mali and the CIA in Somalia, damage to Palmyra in Syria, or Kenyan shopping mall assaults.
The western powers need reminding of our power not just here, but beyond, to strike fear wherever we choose, and with devastating effect, as New York 9/11. I have some plans which will raise money from Muslims world-wide, many have joined us already from Europe, America, Asia, Australia and UK. Many have redeployed using the Refugee crisis as cover.
I am assured through intermediaries of financial support, from some of the Moscow Magicians within the Duma, who continue to confound the west, but each cell will only know so much, to maintain our very high security. Here are Al Hamza’s details for each of you. As usual discuss and give me your answer tomorrow brothers. Allah guide you my friends."
Muhammed my brother, we will meet at 11am tomorrow, from what I have seen, I will have no questions. Salaam, Allah be with you.
Acknowledged the Al Qa’ida Commander, donning his pakul hat and nodding to other representatives, as Haqiri and his friend Ali Al Hamza left the room. The Commander Haqiri felt strange taking the lead role so easily, on Omar Kareem’s absence, having earlier been planning for such an opportunity, but dismissing it as politically dangerous to his continued good health, he was not comfortable with Kareem, and ISIL had informers willing to sacrifice anyone for the Kaliphate.
RUSSIA
Kremlin -Moscow
Good morning, Kolonel Viktor Fyodorov, what is the meeting about this morning?
Queried the portly General Arkady Popovich approaching in his full dress military uniform, his grey military cut hair neat above a Yeltzin like face. "The Duma has approved an additional $100 million of spending for North Korea on the Trans-Siberian Railway network to North Korea through to South Korea, alongside the gas pipeline. To allow exports of gas and electricity to South Korea, and increase trade. Gazprom Gas negotiations have stalled with Ukraine, turning instead to Europe, and Australi for coal, Crimea is now ours but will need support, but the Sevastopol Black Sea port is now secure enough to modify the port. Our militia are still hindering stability in northern and Eastern Ukraine. Finance has been approved for increased trade with China, ‘Petrov’s Pivot’ away from the EU to the eastern nations improves daily, to counter American initiatives in south East Asia, and the Philippines. Said the tall elegant Kolonel Fyodorov, resplendent with campaign medals and gold braid, over his smartly pressed uniform, his speckled brownish grey hair short above his strong angular face and deep set sharp grey eyes.
This also has focused America’s attention in the east and away from Bashar al Assad and the Al Qa’ida, ISIL, ISIS insurgency in the Middle East, Assad has also been allocated new funding by the Duma through the Agricultural Company run by the Arms Dealer Markus Diamond, and new Arms commitments to Assad are to be discussed. Explained General Arkady Popovich, smoothing his uniform jacket.
I have encrypted a message to Markus to stretch his talents for supply and transport of more heavy armaments, he will syphon money from the Assad funding to the Insurgency as usual. No rest for the Rodina’s Military then?" Sighed Viktor Fyodorov mentally reviewing his note to the Arms Dealer Markus Diamond.
Viktor Fyodorov took a deep breath stretching his snug uniform jacket. Must be putting on weight he thought absently.
Inside President Petrov’s office, a tall, greying solidly built professor of Thermic Sciences, degree qualified from Moscow University 45 years previously was being congratulated by President Petrov as his aide gave him the Russian Achievement Medal for Sciences, to pin to his heavy winter coat. Konstantin Balkin your Thermic Sciences work is secret, which is why this presentation is private, the Hyperglide Vehicles, and Barguzin Project must remain so in case of aggression, you understand?
Smiled the broad shouldered President Petrov.
They shook hands, and the Aide ushered Konstantin Balkin, Scientist out of the Palacial Room, past the grey haired Uniformed General, and Kolonel, who nodded approvingly at the be-medalled Konstantin Balkin, known to them for his security clearance on highly classified Military Projects.
The wait in the Kremlin, outside President Petrov’s Office was then interrupted by the slim blue suited male secretary Aide, as he ushered Konstantin out, and the uniform clad General and the Kolonel, back into the grand Baroque Palacial office, to the two chairs in front of President Petrov’s large neat Baroque desk. "Sit General Popovich, and Kolonel Fyodorov, the western news agencies are saying it will be a Clinton win, as Trump is creating outrageous headlines, because he is saying nice comments about myself and the Rodina. We can but hope it continues, smiled Petrov. Petrovs thining fair hair framed a strong face, as he adjusted his suit jacket sleeves, leaning across the desk to address the Officers before him.
His penetrating blue eyes taking in the two Russian Officers he had come to rely on of recent years, through a long standing military and business association, managing multiple company alliances, that have benefitted Oligachs, selected Duma officials and security personel.
"Our secret programmes progress well, the Barguzin programme is operational, the HGV missile programme will get more finance and input from Professor Balkins team, stimulated by the General, through you Viktor Fyodorovich which must continue, now with the Generals permission I would expect you Kolonel Fyodorov, to continue Projects to manage the Arms Dealer Diamond, supplying arms and ammunition and financial demands from Bashar al Assad in Syria. I understand the US coalition had success on recent raids against ISIL, killing the Oil accountant, and capturing his wife, Umm Sayyaf, and damaging Kareem’s network in Mogadishu.
The Middle Eastern Al Qa’ida, ISIL and the Taliban will be impacted for the next 6 months, till they recover. Also carefully monitor and evaluate the other insurgency groups such as ISIS in Syria, affecting Assad and Russian intervention bombing, and ISIL in Levant, Kolonel your bombing campaigns condemned by the west, are devastating ISIS in Damascus, and Syria in general. Bashar al Assad wants Damascus in his control and ISIS defeated before the new US President has time to settle in office. Finance will be approved by Duma to raze ISIS controlled Damascus." Noted Petrov.
Bashar al Assad has requested a meeting, make preparations for extra Air and Naval assistance in the Mediterranean. The Syrian Port of Titus will be a nice warm base for the Rodina armed forces in the Middle East along with the Al Shirat, and Khmeimim Air Bases for our Airforce, financed with Syrian Oil which Rosneft will extract, I think Kolonel Fyodorov.
Mused Petrov expansively.
"President Petrov, the young university professor Leon Volkov has run several competitions for entry to Deep Hack, Cyber Sciences Group, later the best of these will join Dark Hack to increase our ability to conduct subversive misinformation Hacks to Fox and CNN news outlets. Stellar progress has been made in the coming American election processes, we can activate in coming months.
Kolonel Fyodorov, report progress before the election, we can better judge the final result. Next it would be helpful if the Arms dealer has another associate, to replace Kareem who went through your insurgency and militia development programme? Yes? Well I propose you deploy your GRU operatives to check progress on Kareem’s whereabouts. We need to know who is running operations in his absence. Cutting funds will assist, and bring someone out with the begging bowl?
Promised President Petrov thoughtfully.
The Kolonel has my complete support President Petrov.
Confirmed General Popovich firmly, still wondering about a new POTUS rumours circulating, and Petrov’s supposed friendship with the possible new American Commander in Chief, also the American Oil man and what to do with Snowden’s asylum request.
Please report to the General, Kolonel, we have many critical operations that will further Russia’s future interests worldwide, especially Syria, with Assad, so the utmost security is required. No one is to know outside of this room about the Rodina’s high security tactical Operations!
Emphasised ex KGB Lieutenant-Kolonel Dmitri Petrov to the Officers, who nodded vehemently, in ascent to their ex KGB business Kommerad.
As the General and the Kolonel left Petrov’s office. Viktor Fyodorov, who have you got available for this?
Asked Arkady Popovich of his friend the Kolonel. I have GRU Major Anatoly Zhugarov still in Dubai but on his way to Qatar as we speak.
Said the Kolonel.
He is keeping in touch with progress on the upcoming Qatar Royal hunting party going to Saudi and Iraq, and Haqiri who had melted away from Dubai, to parts unknown?
Confirmed Fyodorov, with his usual aplomb, of having his finger on the pulse of his espionage assignments. However the west is going to be playing catchup over Damascus. The US is too engrossed in coming election stalemates to know of our high Security Projects, while they take many months of Election lobbying.
Confirmed Fyodorovich to the General, as they left the Kremlin.
The President was meanwhile leaving instructions as to his coming engagements with the Soviet Navy. With his zipped leather folder of flights and accommodation documents enclosed, he left the office for his armoured Mercedes, at the garage foyer with his security detail. His long time driver had been killed earlier that year. His security detail now accompanied Petrov even to his Mercedes, with the new FSB driver. Sheremetyevo Airport
commanded the fair haired Petrov immaculately clad in grey suit and red tie, with his favourite gold hammer and sickle tie pin, stretching out on the leather seats with a satisfied sigh. His driver’s death he suspected was a warning from the Americans, maybe the elections would deliver a friendlier Commander in Chief in coming months, he thought smiling. His security detail followed in close pursuit.
Scientist Konstantin Balkin was escorted down the stairs to the waiting White Mercedes, which would take him to Moscow Station for his train back to the remote Perm Research facility he was currently working at.
Konstantin had travelled widely in the Rodina because of his Thermic Sciences work. He was privileged enough to have a first class rail pass. The privilege did not remove the cold emptiness in his heart for Katya Balkin his love lost so many years ago. Konstantin could close his eyes any time, and see her as clear as the days he remembered her at Moscow University. Katerina was still at University when they married, during the last year of her Arts Degree, before she went to work as an art restorer at the Moscow Museum. How he missed her laughter and enthusiasm for life.
FYZABAD – Kunduz Province
Northern Afghanistan
Ali Al Hamza’s Pashtun Taliban armed with RPG’s and Kalashnikovs, from the southern provinces, in stolen Toyota flat beds, Green Police Ford Ranger and on motor cycles travelled at night on backroads around the A76 NATO built highway.
