Ungrateful: The Rise and Fall of Labor Unions
()
About this ebook
Because of what my mother and grandparents instilled in me, I live my life daily fighting for the rights of working people. By publishing this book, and sharing my story, I hope that readers will benefit from my experience. The impact from the attacks on labor radiates in all directions, like the ripples from a stone dropped into water The event has such as force that workers around the country feel it in every aspect of their lives. By combing through all that information and then reconstructing the work into cohesive narrative I hope and believe that workers and middle class America can turn this tide around.

DEDICATED TO UNION MEMBERS EVERYWHERE
WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Ronald Roach, for his brilliant research and contribution to this project; my lovely wife, Ruth, who through all the years of our marriage has been a source of strength and help to me as I struggled to fight for the rights of union members and the middle class; and my children, who help keep it all together.
Much has been written about unions, but this book does not go into that pile. I hope it has the impact to inspire. I speak to union members about these matters and find that limited knowledge is abounds. If I can expand one horizon or open one pair of eyes to the importance of having a strong union, then I have succeeded in my goal.

Chapter 1
WHAT HAPPENED TO LABOR UNIONS IN THE UNITED STATES? WHY ARE THEY SO WEAK? WHY ARE UNIONS DWINDLING INTO OBSCURITY? AFTER ALL, UNIONS ARE WHAT MADE AMERICA STRONG.
Labor unions afforded many Americans the opportunity to lift themselves up from poverty and live the American dream as middle-class citizens.
Unions in America have correctly been described as a stabilizing force in the national economy. The gains that unions have been able to achieve have brought benefits, direct and indirect, to the public as a whole.
It was labor unions, for example, that spearheaded the drive for public education for every child.
It was labor unions that gave us the five-day workweek, vacations, health benefits, pensions, relaxed work rules, livable wages, and many other pleasures that
