Prelude
Why would anyone write a book on this subject you might ask? Then again why did you buy this book? I might ask you the same question. For me it started one sunny afternoon. I had this unusual thought come into my mind as to why so many technologies I had seen simply failed or never really got off the ground, so to speak? In particular, I always felt that the advanced barcodes and data scanning technologies that I had been exposed to in my career never really became mainstream. They just didn’t have that viral
thing going on for them. Why? Maybe some things in this book will give you a few clues?
Anyway, who thinks about these things….former executives in the nursing home, frustrated graduate students and motivational speakers on long plane rides or maybe aspiring authors? You decide.
Well add to this, on that particular day I thought a bit about my father and my uncle, who are now with me in spirit. They both had career accomplishments, but when it came to expression and achievement they were different men. Then it really hit me? What did they have in common?
Writing and Teaching others. They both liked to write about NEW things and they had a penchant for teaching and helping others learn. So there you have it, the primary reason for writing this book kind of runs in the family. Telling folks about something they should know about and how to benefit from it. I just wanted to do it! And Why Not?
Before going forward, I’d like to mention that I took some inspiration from a number of other people that I worked with or met along the career journey like Bob Greenwald, Paul Inserra, Cliff Rockwell, Bill Murphy, Bill Elliott, Arch McGill, Jim Sims, Richard Hoag, Chuck Strauch, Bill Bauer, Jerry Schwartz, Ray Mayo, Steve Lyon, Harvey McKay, Phil Marson, coach George Allen who once said the future is now
and many others. All were very bright creative men, colorful, entertaining and accomplished. Thank you all for making my personal journey so exciting and memorable.
Chapter 1
Why would anyone write about this stuff?
When it came down to the writers in my family
Dad (who held over 30 U.S. patents) wrote a book no one (but for a choice few) ever read entitled Ultrasonic’s in Packaging
but it was my uncle Frank Thomas, who wrote a somewhat famous small circulation classic, entitled How to write the story of your Life
. That book is on the shelves of many libraries and bookstores even though it just went out of print. In fact, it is often mentioned in the world of memoir writers even to this very day.
I know with my Dad he continually sought out the challenge of something he had not done before. This was always driving him forward. As for my uncle, who was a less intense, but equally patient man…what was the motivation for him? I can’t honestly say because I unfortunately can no longer ask him.
What I do know is that while residing at a senior citizens community in Florida originally known as Dell Webb’s Sun City Center (Dell Web was a former NY Yankee owner), he was asked to teach a writing course. This seemed perfectly natural for an accomplished journalist, publicist and writer to do at the time.
What happened next is that during the course of his classes many of the seniors he was teaching asked him repeatedly about recording their memoirs. There were many who wanted to leave a modest legacy for their respective families and several actually went to a vanity press publisher to print copies of the finished work for their loved ones. Was all this prodding the reason behind the undertaking or was it my lovely Aunt Mary Ellen reminding him daily it is never too late.
My aunt who elected to have both knees replaced in her 80’s and was fully recovered in six months….most people have one done and never undertake a second operation. What a feisty gal she is! She simply doesn’t know how to take no for an answer. Maybe it was 40 years of teaching little brat kids and controlling her classes by somehow intimidating them with her powerful stare, even though she is less than 5 feet tall. Who can say?
Wayne Gretsky was once quoted as saying "you always
