CHAPTER 1
Gone
Dawn got up with a shiver in her toes, as she could feel the cool winter breeze coming in through little spaces in her wooden window frames. Her hair was curly, with the slightest of blonde highlights. She had grown nearly a foot since the summer and now stood as tall as most women twice her age. Dawn had also become as brave as a lion, unwilling to give into the fear so many others around her seemed to have. Her room spoke volumes about her personality, as Dawn’s dad, Azael, had painted it just how she wanted over the summer, blue and yellow, with a couple abstract streaks of pink. She had a dresser on the east side of her wall, and her bed was next to the window.
Dawn could see the whole forest from her room, and through the forest she could see a glimpse of the town where she’d walk to get groceries or supplies for the house. As she escaped the warmth of her big bed and blankets, Dawn looked out the window. The woods were covered with a white blanket of snow. Her father was making a fort, most likely to surprise her and pin her down by throwing snowballs. Dawn grabbed her jacket and snow boots and ran to the back door; she was going to try to sneak up on her father. If the plan was timed right. She would be able to tackle him in the snow and then bury him with the fort he was building to stand behind. But she would have to run fast. As she prepared her strategy, she counted to herself, "Okay, —one, two, three, go.
Dawn ran out and tackled him into the snow but he was quick and escaped before she could bury him, so she ran for the edge of the forest. She was about to hide behind the bushes, but something stopped her. Dawn saw a figure, not like an animal or a human, but like a drawing or graffiti from a gang. She walked up and touched it. There was a shock and flash of lightning, and the sound made by the strike surprised her. Dawn turned around and looked for her father, but he was nowhere to be found. As she ran to where he had been standing, all she could see was a huge black circle, which she assumed had been created by the lightning. There was a white spot where the snow showed through the black circle, but her father was gone. Laying in the middle of the black circle was an envelope with her name on it in big bold letters—Dawn. She grabbed the envelope and sliced it open with her nail. Grabbing the letter, she read it aloud.
Dear Dawn,
I have taken your father and I will not be returning him unless you find your brothers, sisters and mother. Your mom should know what it is that I want. Tell her to remember the year 1998. You better find them. The longer you take, the more your father suffers, until he dies!!!
Sincerely, XXXXX
Dawn was so angry, and scared, and nearly ripped up the letter, but she couldn’t; it was all the evidence she had to prove her father had been taken. But what she didn’t know was how to find her
