    CHAPTER 1

    ‘The Cold Case’

Cumberland, Maryland The Random House Estate

The weather was a cool and sunny day. The temperature was around the fifties. A bright yellow Taxicab with big bold black letters, Taxi was written out on both sides of it. The cab driver drove up a long black pavement driveway and stop at the front door. At the same time, a black skintight leather glove hand had stretch out with the money they owe. Then the passenger gets out as the cab driver pulls away. Leaving a man in a black tailor wool overcoat and a black polished leather gold clip snap in front briefcase in his hand.

The Random House Estate was a very large Victorian three-story style with a beautiful red craftsman brickwork home. The building itself looked very invited. The man was standing there admiring the craftsman workmanship of the Victorian architecture frame. He approaches the two black frames with a white double doors. He then pulled open the doors to see a beautiful double large black and white backsplash and ceramic tile-covering floor in the main size office space. On his left was a long narrow black panel hallway with a creamy tan carpet floor. He walked in the main office toward the front desk. There were three women who where station there who were chatting among themselves.

The man appears to be gorgeous and well groomed. He’s a forty-seven with a mix Italian-Mexican features. He was a well-muscled build with a short jet-black hair and piercing midnight blue eyes. He stood six foot two in his black tailor wool overcoat, black designer silk tie, a expensive white cotton dress shirt, a dark blue cotton slacks that was cuffed at the bottom, and a pair of black Italian dress shoes. His briefcase was black polished leather with a gold clip snap in the front. He was gorgeous who had gentlemanly like qualities that approach the desk.

He was sent here to help out. Some odd reason two previous doctors who ran the Estate’s children ward had simply vanished. With no knowledge of them ever step foot here or where ‘bouts. He knew nothing of any medical history for those misguided souls who do landed here. He walked easily so he wouldn’t disturb any patients if any on the floor.

That’s where he met, Marcia Carter. She was a pretty thirty-nine woman. She had a friendly southern accent and a warm sunshine welcome smile. She’s an overweight nurse who has shoulder-length ash-brown hair that was pulled into a ponytail. She’s got these deep, alluring gray eyes. She stood five foot four in a friendly passion pink cotton sweater jacket over a white cotton zip-up shirt, white cotton slacks, and white cushion padded moccasin.

She was going over some notes with another young lady who was going to take her place. When the gorgeous man approach the front desk, Excuse me. He used his charming accent toward Marcia. She raised her head and saw him. Oh my god. She said, in her southern accent as the words escape her. Pardon me. He said to her. She was so flabbergasted by his good looks she was speechless. Sorry, honey. She said, in her sweet southern accent. What can I do for you? I was supposed to meet Dr. Shaw. Marcia looked at him twice with her sweet misty gray eyes. I’m sure you are. Looking at him as if he just made her mad by using another woman’s name in front of her. What’s your name, honey? She said, not really happy checking up on Dr. Shaw’s appointments. Dr. Ricardo Antonio Lopez Kasch. My appointment is at five. She was scanning the appointment book in front of her. You’re sure? Yes, ma’am. If you need proof I can show you if I need to.

Flipping through the pages of the appointment book. In searching for the name Kasch. He happened to be leaning over to see his name in a bold print with little red hearts circling it. That’s me. He said, reaching out with his ungloved hand to his name. At same time Marcia was about to deny his presents. Sorry, Dr. Ketch. She said, giving her apologize. She had literately miss-pronouncing his name on purpose. He gave her one of his famous smiles. Please call me Ricardo. Most people do. He said, as he reaches out for her hand as he placed a small kiss on the back of it. She smiled at him. Okay. Ricardo. She said, as she blush like a teenager. Walk this way. He nods as he followed her as she leads him toward the directory’s door. Once they left the area, the two girls who she was talking to, were giggling like a couple schoolgirls.

They stopped at a black frame door with frosted panel window door with a brass knob. It gave off a cold and unwelcome feeling. Marcia then knocked on the door gently. Miss, I want to thank you for your hospitality. Adding another kiss to her hand and she went giddy. She began waving her other hand like a fan as if she was too hot. It’s my pleasure. My name’s Marcia. It’s all my pleasure to see a rare beauty as a rose. She gave a nervous laugh. Land sake, said Marcia. I’m not that beautiful. You are. Looking into her eyes as she smiled. Marcia. He spoke her name and used his accent. That just sent another warm shivers up her spin as she tried to fight off another fit of giggles. When the door open, the new owner and the director who just heard the conversation as she stood in front of them. Thank you, Nurse Carter. The woman said, giving Marcia the looked of disapproval. Ms. Shaw. Said, Marcia who nodded at the much older woman.

Dr. Laura Shaw was a model gorgeous forty-three demanding businesswoman. She has long flaming red hair and deep sea green eyes. She stood five foot eight in a beautifully shaped navy velvet business suit jacket, over a red lustrous smooth-fitting cotton knit v-shape blouse, white pearl necklace, beautifully navy shape suede skirt, and black luxuriously two inch heel patent pumps. She was definitely built for trouble.

Ricardo sticks his hand out for a friendly introduction but she wasn’t impressed. So he dropped his hand and enters her office. I was suspecting you to be here next week. She said, as she turned from the door. With her back to him, he was able to measure her up. She walked gracefully back to her desk. The medium femininity office space with its average dark red oak wood panel circling the landscape as the unwelcome settles in. He continued studying the room as she sat down behind her red oak desk. She had same clean updated filing and furniture gave that cold atmosphere.

I caught an early flight. I see. Laura said, who was measuring him up as he sat down. I had some time off. And since I was suppose to be here next week. I thought since you need my assistant. I thought you might need me right away. We do. But when we hired your assistant we didn’t know you were, well . . . giving her stating the fact voice. Older? Perhaps mixed raced? He said, using his authority in his voice. Older. You sounded young over the last conversation we had. I’m not too old for the job. He said, giving his demanding voice. Of course, not. We hired the very best here. You fit the bill.

Dr. Charles Miller will be your partner in the matter. Laura said, giving her best firm voice. Yes. I had been told that already. Not loosing his tone. Laura had crossed her legs as she continued giving her firm confident speech she was well known for. You will have Nurse Carter at your station. Nodding at her as she gave him the names that will be working with him. If you need some help don’t hesitate to call me. She had just giving him the idea this meeting was over before it started. She stood up and walked over to the door and having it open for her new temporary employee to leave. I have another meeting and if you don’t mind. Nurse Carter will show you the way. He stood and walked out as she shut the door after him. Blowing air out as calm as she could be. Right. She went to her desk and began her morning calls. Marcia Carter who was waiting for him at the end of the hallway to show him where he’ll be working at.

Did the she-bitch finally turn you lose? Marcia spoke out loud. Knowing her rough language might have stun most people. But Ricardo seemed to dismiss the name-calling and nods at her. Shall we, my lady. He was saying as he loop her arm through his. Where you from? Marcia said. I’m from New York, mostly. But was raised in Mississippi. Why? Oh, Marcia said sounding disappointed. It’s the accent? He asked her and knew that was what she was wondering about. I’m from a long line of Dutch, Italian, Mexican, and Cuban. I always fit in by my race. He said, giving her a little in sight of him. Well, you sure have a great accent. He smiled at her and thanked her as they walked toward a dead end hallway. We turn left here. He watches as she pushed a button on the wall. We go up. As the elevator slide open as they step in. Leaving the main office to her co-workers for seven years.

The black and green elevator doors slid open to their stop. Most people here are nice. Except Dr. Shaw, she’s a royal pain in the ass. Marcia explains to him who he could trust or not. They enter a long depressing sight. A well lit up with a long line of fluorescent white light on an eight-foot ceiling. The walls were dark with no friendly expression in this drool environment. This floor got several exits. This is the children’s ward. Most people don’t bother this floor. Well except Dr. Miller. He’s so-so. She was giving him the load down. On both side of the gloomy walls instead of using pads they held chain link fences for wall decorations. They gave Kasch a reason to believe someone thinks these children were either dangerous to the caretakers or to themselves. They stood out wiry and loopy as they past. Why do you have those here? He pointed out to her. Those are for safety reason. Why? They’re just children. She was stun that no one has ever asked her that before. I never did know. They were here even before I was hired. Now Betty, at the station might know. But still even children can’t be that dangerous. I know. But here at Random House even that can’t be for sure.

He had nod at her answer as they approach the station. This is were I’m station. Down that hall is Ward A and B. The same gloomy, depression greeny wall paint and the dull shade tile floors. Ricardo nod as she pointed the direction to each section. I’ll show you were your office is. They moved toward Ward B on his right. They stopped at his new office space. She opens his door and let him get unpacked. Thanks.

His office space was dusty with a brilliant craftsman’s workmanship with the same red cherry oak wood furniture that was in Dr. Shaw’s office. He had to admit this was more pleasant then the other places he had worked at. It was more masculinity then he ever hope for. He began to work as the boxes were placed in his new office. His desk set back was clutter up and he’s not even done his rounds. He knows he got over his head as he shifted the items and began his job. A knock caught his attention.

The door open as a pretty boy with a cute face appears in the doorway. He was a thirty-seven doctor. He had short dirty blonde hair and way too friendly gray eyes. He stood five foot ten in a white cotton lab coat, blue pinstripes tie, white cotton dress shirt, a pair of tan cotton slacks, and good to wear black dress shoes.

Yes, said Ricardo, in more a surprised to see him there. I’m sorry to have bothered you. But you must be Dr. Kasch. Kasch nod and they shook hands. Kasch gave his hand a firm shake to Miller’s and they let go. Miller stands back and was watching with curiosity. I’m sorry with the mess here. Its all right. I was aiming to collect all this and shipped to storage before you got here. Its really okay. Both were collecting the files that were left by the previous owners. Looks like old files. Ricardo announced. Yeah, mostly. When they get tired of handling them downstairs. They sent them up here. Just to keep track with the new ones. Miller said, giving Ricardo a wary smile. Lets get this office into shape then. Together they worked the room placing all the files inside the brown over flowing boxes. At least they got the scattering files out of the way as they placed them into a storage container.

They moved the boxes toward the storage room that was again showing the rows of wire chain link fences along the walls. They walked down a long dull color concrete hallway carrying the containers that were meant for storage. They passed a set of silver metal filing cabinets and a large wooden desk that no one was sitting at. Huh, must be on a break, Ricardo had thought.

They finally reached an empty bookshelves that looked more like an overcrowd library then actually storage. Miller was placing the first container on its shelve where it belong. Ricardo follows his actions and placed his. Ricardo was dusting his hands off as he slapped them together to clear the dust from them. When suddenly Miller stopped and nudges him. Ricardo turns to see something.

They had four small surprising guests watching them. Are they allowed to leave their room? Ricardo question Miller. Yeah, sure. Some of them have insomnia. Miller commented on the diagnose that brought the four of them here. I see. Well. Since I’m going to be their doctor I might as well get acquainted with them. Walking toward the four children who looked dazed at him. They were watching suspicious as to who he was. Like all children he helped. They both had signs of fatigue and on the dangerous level of not getting enough nutritious in their diet. As he knelt down to their level like most adults do. He was more or less examining them up close. Hello. They looked startled. He held his hand out to them. They looked at him questionable as rather to take it or not.

Who are you? said a voice, who piped in. The tallest of the group was a young cute twelve-year-old, John Weber who was slender build. He had a short curly blonde hair and laser blue eyes. He stood five foot seven in a bright colored striped cotton shirt and Levi jeans with no shoes but white cotton socks. The boy looked more curious then anything. Call me Ric. And what’s your name? The boy reply, John. John then looked over at Miller as to ensure his safety to Ricardo. Miller just gave a short nod to sure them it was indeed safe.

This here is Will and Scotty. Will Savant was a young shy nine-year-old nerdy boy. He had on small kids black framed glasses. He had short black hair and dark brown eyes. He stood four foot six in a red snoopy matching pajamas and house shoes. He was shying away from Ricardo but was more at ease. He looked well taken care of. He had good color in his eyes and his color of his skin tone was good.

The boy, Scotty Jackson who stood out in front was a young small six-year-old sick-looking boy. He had shoulder-length red hair and sharp green eyes. He stood five foot in a terry cloth robe, blue striped cotton sleeping pants, and barefoot. He looked like he didn’t weigh that much. He was more quite as his hands held onto Will’s who turned hold on to John.

There was a young pretty five-year-old little girl, Lilly Harrison. She had long flowing whitish-blond mane of hair that appears to be dancing against her slender build. She has large sparkling baby blue eyes. She stood three foot three in a long feathery light blue gown with large light blue bow tied in the back that looked homemade and white cotton socks. She appeared out behind them. What’s your name? Ricardo asked, who was watching the group. That’s Lilly. John spoke, who answer for her. She looked at him curiously. He held his hand out to them as if they were strays and needed another looked at him. Gathering around at his hand to see his hand was well groom and not bit dangerous. You seem all right. Said, John. A much louder voice came down the hall. All right children. They scrambled and fed. What’s the matter? Ricardo asked to Miller. They don’t like many people especially Nurse Andrews.

The nurse Miller who they spoke about had suddenly appeared. Nurse Julia Andrews, a young thirty-six bold and rude of a woman. She had long soft brilliant auburn that was placed in a bun and pretty baby blue eyes. She was slender build. She stood five foot six in a white cotton smock, white cotton slacks, and the same cushioned white shoes. She had a demanding tone. She reminds him of a nun he once knew. She stood there and stares at them.

What are you two doing? Miller was even afraid to answer. Ricardo spoke for him as he got off his knees. I’m new to this faculty and he was kindly enough to show me around. Nurse Andrews looked at him as if he had no right. Well, you should know this is an restricted area. Even Dr. Miller knows it. Easy up, will ya. I just helping Dr. Kasch putting away these boxes from his office. That put a damper in her day. She didn’t like that her station was disturb as she continuing staring at them. They finished putting away the last box on top the shelf and moved away as they were heading back. She gave another unsatisfying looked at them as they began walking toward her. She moved to let them pass. She went back to guarding her station. She’s our filing clerk here and very protective over our files. Miller said, giving him the scoop on who she was and what she does. Ricardo nod at Miller’s explanation. They moved farther down the hall as they made their rounds. I’ll go do my rounds and thanks for your help. Miller nod and left him at his office door.

With any luck, Ricardo would have this ship in shape. They didn’t call him the brainiac for nothing. Taken his briefcase and placing it on the table. Placing his black frame glasses on. Then he was removing his black overcoat but some odd reason he felt as if he was being watched. He turned around and saw no one but a shadowy figure casting around the doorway. The silhouette shadowy figure had moved as if they were still there. Placing his coat on
