About this ebook

Here’s the Companion Study Guide for Psalmwriter Book I in the Chronicles of David.

Determining your Destiny draws parallels between our search for purpose and meaning and the life of David as he flees from his own destiny. It assists us in examining our own lives as we seek to know what each of our own individual unique purposes are in our earthly sojourn.

It sees his Psalms as a help not only in his life, but in our own lives also. It’s suitable for either individual study or group studies.

    INTRODUCTION

Life takes us many places sometimes. Always there are scenes and incidents in each of our lives that we never expected to encounter. Look around you. The next time you’re bogged down in traffic the possibility is great that in several of those cars nearby are individuals who had wonderful marriages until their spouse walked out—unexpectedly. Children don’t quite turn out sometimes like we expected. Maybe your health is quite different than it was several years ago. Your job is not what you expected to be doing after you graduated from college.

You may be happy and fulfilled right now. Maybe you have perfect kids and are happy in the church where you are serving. Yes, you’ve put money away for retirement. You may be the kind of person who can’t hold a job. Always sick? Years of bad luck have dogged your footsteps.

So what do you have to say for yourself? Blame it on luck, fate, destiny or God. Everyone else does. How does life work anyway? Is it a string of events that pounds us like a little rubber ball at the end of the cord bouncing off the paddle? Or is it a puzzle that fits together?

Let me introduce myself. I am Everyman. I had a perfect life. A man with the Midas touch who set out to conquer the world and perhaps achieve greatness if it was to be so. Great job, great health, dreams that came true, house on the hill, three Mercedes in the garage. A puzzle that fit perfect until one day . . . one day a piece of that beautiful scene refused to fit into its slot. It was shaped wrong. I didn’t understand why it was shaped like this and what was even more perplexing was the fact that I was a child of God. As far as I was concerned this piece of the puzzle was certainly not something that I expected or deserved. In fact it had been delivered to the wrong person! OK, blame it on fate, bad luck, even God before we acknowledge that it could have been a mistake or that maybe it was part of our destiny.

As part of the search for the proper pieces of the puzzle I began writing a devotional novel about David. When I had completed the first volume I saw that David was just like me! Or maybe I was just like David! He felt that he had been given a raw deal. Nothing fit together and nothing went right. He bucked and resented the fact that he had been chosen to do something special. He was uncomfortable with his calling. By the end of the first volume of Psalmwriter Flight from Destiny—The Chronicles of David both he and I understood more about life and the situations that are thrust upon us. What is their purpose in our existence?

It was then that a whole bunch of odd puzzle pieces was dropped into my lap and over the course of several more years and several more volumes of Psalmwriter—The Chronicles of David the
