Ichthys, the Great Fish - Valerie Harrison
Foreword
I place great value on Dr. Valerie Harrison’s new book, Ichthys, the Great Fish, both as an educator and as one who studies the Word of God. As a child, I was bored with reading. I grew tired after reading a paragraph, especially if there was more than one paragraph on a page. As a child, I could not see the value of reading. I only enjoyed reading comics, articles saturated with exciting colors and pictures of animals, action, and the macrocosm, or subbed media. When playing a computerized reading game, I would only focus on the game. I would sometimes listen to audiobooks, but because of my lack of interest in reading, I barely followed along. That is why I think that Ichthys, the Great Fish, is the perfect way to teach a child to read and comprehend, especially a child like I was. This book has the ideal blend of imagination, engagement, and common-core instruction to promote success as a reader.
Additionally, Ichthys, the Great Fish provides a meaningful way to study Scripture. The pacing of the plot and the depth of the questions in the Response to the Literature section maximize the learning opportunity of the Scriptures within the novel. The instructional activities not only strengthen reading skills, but also help the reader reflect on the goodness of God and His many other attributes. I find that details that might have been missed when quickly scanning the Scriptures are highlighted in the standards-based, differentiated activities. My favorite activities are the text-self connections, which allow the reader to reflect and consider their personal experience with God. The graphic novel format is a great way to experience the stories in the Bible with visuals and activities that make learning exciting and memorable.
I am reminded of a time when I worked as an instructor at the Literacy Center in Carrollton, Georgia. There was an older gentleman who just wanted to read the Bible. He struggled to read large blocks of text. Ichthys would be perfect for him and others like him, stifled by illiteracy. I hope this book reaches people like him and all over the world. Just think: for the price of a book, you can have access to a lifetime of learning.
I hope every child has the opportunity to read this exciting novel. I recommend this book and all of the Educationally Yours graphic novels for use in classrooms, Sunday schools, and Bible studies around the world.
