Quiet Pursuit
Valentine’s Day is swiftly approaching. Many of the men at WFI Pharmaceutics prepare to present gifts to their lucky ladies. A few of the men gather in the cafeteria to discuss the Valentine’s Day plans each one has in store for their significant others. While the men continue their Valentine's Day conversation, Roosevelt Aston manages to enter the cafeteria unnoticed. Roosevelt is the owner and CEO of WFI Pharmaceutics, a small pharmaceutical manufacturing company. As the owner of a small company, Roosevelt takes pride in the friendly atmosphere he created for his employees.
Secretly, Roosevelt loves to listen to the chatter that his employees conjure up during their lunch break. Whenever Mr. Aston needs a moment of sanity, he heads to the cafeteria. Now at ease, he elects to sit at a nearby table and listen to the amusing conversation.
Man, I got my girl this banging dress,
exclaims Bobby!
Jackson replies, Naw man, I outdid you this year. This is the year I propose to my lady. Yep, got her a three-carat ring!
The guys congratulate Jackson and give him some dap.
Bobby, playfully grabbing his chest, replies, Yeah man, you can have that. I’m just trying to get some action. Marriage? Nah, playa. I ain’t ready.
Roosevelt eagerly listens while pretending to check his emails. He wants to maintain a professional persona as CEO and feels fortunate that his employees are comfortable around him. If the employees realized Roosevelt loves their cafeteria talk, they might become too comfortable. This could ruin the reputation he worked so hard to create.
While the guys continuously talk, the excitement surrounding Valentine's Day mounts. Roosevelt wanders back to thoughts of his love life.
Deep inside, Roosevelt has always longed for a special lady to give him the love his heart desires. Both of his parents died in a tragic automobile accident. At that moment, his life changed forever, forcing him to live with an uncle he barely knew.
Even now, Roosevelt’s relationship with his mother remains very special. Since her death, he yearns for a love resembling the love she gave. How can he possibly love another when his heart is broken? He has been in several relationships, hoping that someone will melt his heart. To avoid the hurt, he has built an imaginary wall that ultimately suffocates his relationships. Another lost loved one is more than he can bear. He has had so many women in his bed that keeping a tally is a chore. Even with a warm bed here and there, the heart still aches. Roosevelt wonders if someone can break the chains of his heart.
Bobby interrupts. What's going on Boss?!
Roosevelt smiles warmly. Just checking my emails. I have to stay abreast of current pharma information.
Bobby mumbles amongst the laughter. Uh, I hope we were not too loud with our Valentine's Day chatter. We'll leave you to your emails, Boss.
He and the rest of the table mates proceed to gather their belongings.
Oh, no, no. You all did not bother me. If I deemed you were too rowdy, I would have let you all know. I hope the Valentine’s Day plans work out perfectly.
With a stern voice, Roosevelt answers in a way the men would not realize he paid close attention to their conversation, wishing he could join. If only Roosevelt had someone to love.
The men leave the cafeteria, and a group of five women enters through the cafeteria’s side entrance. The women are chattering and laughing. With Valentine's Day days away, it is a hot topic for everyone.
Macy, do you have any plans this year for Valentine's Day?
Charlene asks, annoyingly popping her gum.
Nope, I do not. I never make plans for Valentine's Day. Never have anyone to share the day with.
