    Mark of the Shark - Ashleigh Davenport

    Chapter 1

    Camilla walked through the dank corridor, pushing water out of the ship in slow, gentle movements. Her magic made it recede from each room of the drowned ship. They were almost a mile down in the ocean, so she had to be as careful as possible.

    She used a familiar technique that allowed her to make it easy for her clients to search the wreckage. It also coaxed the underwater inhabitants out of harm’s way.

    The wood around her was swollen with retained water. Tattered remains of decayed wallpaper clung to spots along the walls. Her steps squished down the hall. Something was different. She pulled off her swim cap, freeing her thick, goddess braids.

    The door at the end of the hall creaked open. Camilla’s heart jumped. Adrenalin pumped through her at a jackhammer’s pace.

    What the hell? She took a calming breath.

    It was usual for things to shift when the water that held them in place was removed.

    Why am I so jumpy?

    Darkness wafted from the room and seeped into the hall. Something familiar called to her magic. It beckoned her down the hall, into the dark. That wasn’t normal.

    Fear clenched at her heart, but she had to keep moving. It was her job. She had to make sure the ship was safe enough to move forward. Snapping her fingers, she conjured an orb of fluorescent light that swam and sparkled over her palm.

    The hall filled with a blue
