Passing the PRINCE2 Examinations - AXELOS
1 The PRINCE2 qualifications
1.1 INTRODUCING PRINCE2
PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a project management method which is used extensively in more than 150 countries around the world, and its take-up grows daily. It was originally conceived in the 1970s and since then has grown and developed into the project management method of choice for many international organizations, being widely considered as the world’s leading method. It is based on experience drawn from thousands of projects, and from the contributions of countless people involved in projects, including project managers, project teams, academics, trainers, consultants and others. It is generic and can be applied to any project regardless of project scale, type, organization, geography or culture.
Figure 1 OGC best-practice guidance
PRINCE2 is part of a suite of guidance developed by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC), which is aimed at helping organizations and individuals manage their projects, programmes and services consistently and effectively. Figure 1 shows the structure of the set.
Where appropriate, OGC methods and guidance are supported by qualification schemes, and all aspects are supported by accredited training and consultancy services. Please refer to Further Information for more details of other OGC guidance available.
1.2 PRINCE2 QUALIFICATIONS
The examination body for PRINCE2, the APM Group, has offices in Australia, Benelux, China, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. These offices serve the growing number of candidates who want to take the PRINCE2 examinations, which are available in languages that include Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. To date, more than 250,000 people hold a PRINCE2 qualification, and examinations have been taken in excess of 100 countries in all continents including Brazil, Latvia, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, to name but a few. With more than 2,500 examinations being taken every week, the popularity of PRINCE2 continues to grow throughout the world.
There are two levels of PRINCE2 qualification: foundation and practitioner. The foundation level aims to test understanding of the principles and terminology used in PRINCE2. The practitioner level tests the ability of a candidate to apply and tailor PRINCE2 to address the needs and problems of a given project scenario.
1.3 THE PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE
This guide gives an overview of both the foundation and practitioner qualifications and is designed to help you prepare for the examinations. It has been updated to reflect the changes in the examinations which have arisen from the release of the 2009 edition of the PRINCE2 manual, Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2. It contains:
Details of the PRINCE2 syllabus, showing the different subject areas of PRINCE2 which could be tested, together with the appropriate learning levels
An outline of the structure and format of the foundation and practitioner examinations
A sample paper for each examination, together with rationales for the correct answers
A description of the different question types which may be included in each examination.
This guide does not attempt to provide you with details of the PRINCE2 method itself. You can find these details in the manual Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2, which is essential reading if you wish to sit the examinations and obtain either level of PRINCE2 qualification.
This guide does not refer to the companion publication Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2, as this is not included in the PRINCE2 syllabus.
