NOTE TO TEACHERS
The story of Lise Meitner dramatizes the changes that were unfolding around the world during the 1930s and 1940s. It allows students to evaluate critical issues such as women’s rights, racism, discrimination, the origin of humans, differences in science and technology, plagiarism, the benefits of our American republic versus rule by dictators, the influence of Darwinian evolution on Hitler and other cultures, and the rise of Nazism.
This book can be added to any related science or history curriculum without disrupting the existing content. It will enrich students’ knowledge about this important period of history and help them make connections that may not be obvious otherwise. Students should be encouraged to extend their knowledge of the events in this book.
Teacher discretion should determine whether to have students orally discuss the review questions or write their answers. Many of the questions are directly related to issues and problems in today’s culture and are worth the time to explore.
PROLOGUE
Five hundred years before the first coming of Jesus, a young Jewish girl named Esther lost both of her parents during an attack on Israel by the Babylonian army. She was carried by force to the land of Babylon but was taken in and raised by her uncle. Soon afterward, the kingdom of Persia overtook Babylon. Then in a series of events ordained by God, Esther rose to the position of Queen of Persia and became an important part of exposing and thwarting an evil plan to kill all the Jews in the kingdom. This dramatic story is told in the biblical account of the book of Esther.
Twenty-five hundred years later, the German ruler, Adolph Hitler, devised an evil plan in which he plotted to completely eliminate all Jews from the face of the earth. Lise Meitner was conducting nuclear research in Berlin, Germany, as Hitler began to implement his plans. Like Esther before her, Lise found herself in the right place at the right time.
Lise’s Jewish heritage made her a clear target. Forced to flee for her life to Sweden, Lise thought she had lost the opportunity to help find an explanation for the unexpected results from the nuclear research she and her coworkers were conducting. Because of her flight from Germany, she and her physicist nephew made an amazing discovery in Sweden about nuclear fission reactions, which was transferred to the American and Allied forces.
Many see God’s hand in the defeat of Hitler and the Axis Powers as well as in the return of large numbers of surviving Jews to the land of their ancestors, known today as Israel.

THE BIG DREAMS OF GISELA, GUSTI, AND LISE
The traditions of their Jewish neighborhood of Leopoldstadt rose up like invisible walls within the city of Vienna as the three Meitner sisters, ages 15, 14, and 13, contemplated their
