About this ebook

Although it can stand alone, in order to fully appreciate the stories in this book, you really should read the previous books in the Shonak Series. These earlier books inform the reader about the Shonakians and their relationship with Earth. They are a very different race of people on an alternate version of our planet who have a very complex relationship with us and have had for many thousands of years. Most of that time, we knew nothing about them, but they knew everything about us. The Shonakians are a simple, placid people but so different from us that a great deal of background is provided in the first book, The Crown of Happenstance. That book introduces Bon of Shonak, who you will read more of in the following two books. There is also Itself, the over the spirit of the "Six Earths," and Atsa, a proto-Hopi and tribal chief. This is where you learn the details about Shonak and its people, about their monoculture, their boring, sexless lives, their phase-altering technology, their thirst for intellectual and technical conquest, and their love for Earth-watching. The second book in the series, It's About Time, discovers a new relationship between Earth and Shonak. Itself causes an otherwise inexplicable time shift that propels Earth 3210 years into its future while there is no time-change on Shonak. Because Earth is now an advanced, technological world, Shonak openly introduces themselves. They are willing to share much of their advanced technology with Earth but do not reveal their extensive surveillance operation on Earth with its blatant invasion of most everyone's privacy.

CRIMISLE. Criminal Island. Formerly Prince Patrick Island in the Canadian Northwest Territories. It's the world's 55th largest island at more than six thousand square miles in area. It is an uninhabited polar desert often surrounded by sea ice.

CRIMISLE I. The operation which used CRIMISLE to house the world's worst prisoners who were arrested andsentenced in special Purge courts. This first iteration of Criminal Island was active use from +2273 UAY to +2531

UAY. It was officially still on the books after that but national prisons were adequate to house the reduced numbers of criminals so there was no need for it. Outstanding features: No guards, no separation of inmates by the length of sentence, level of violence during the crime, or gender. Minors of course did not go to CRIMISLE. If there was time left on their sentence when they turned eighteen, they were eligible, and some magistrates did send them there.

CRIMISLE II. The operation which used CRIMISLE the second time around for incarcerating all the world's prisoners with sentences of one year and a day to life. This operation was in conjunction with Purge II which began in +3036 UAY and continues to this day. Outstanding features: Inmates are separated by violent or nonviolent crime and non-life or life sentences and live in climate-controlled huts of up to fifty inmates each. There are copbots, medbots, and
humbots among the inmate population to assist with law enforcement and emergency medical care as well as early
warning intelligence and video production for Shonak's infotainment network.

Dennis Patrick Treece

Dennis retired from the Army in 2000, after thirty years, and five wars, if you count The Cold War and the Global War on Terror, to Vietnam, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and the Peacekeeping mission in the Balkans. He is a retired Army Colonel, a combat wounded veteran, and not at all religious. The first part of his life was entirely conventional. He grew up in a non-religious Navy family, living around the country and around the world, and his father retired in Phoenix, Arizona when he was in the seventh grade. After graduation from Arizona State University Dennis went into the Army via the ROTC program and his first tour was in Vietnam where he was wounded by enemy mortar fire. He served for thirty years, half of which was overseas, and participated in the Gulf War and the peacekeeping operation in the Balkans. He was the US Army’s first “Cyber Cop” and when he retired as a full colonel in 2000 he went to work in the cyber security business. After the tragedy of 9/11 he was hired by a major city Port Authority to run the security program for three airports and the city’s seaports. As he got older things in his life changed. He married an artist with a PsyD and ordination as a minister in the Church of Spiritualism. He became a Reiki Master and studied spiritual things while being “coached” through the contents of what would become the book A Million Monkeys. He found the whole thing difficult to accept, but finally translated the thoughts from these Spirits and published the book. Dennis accepted his role as Narrator of the story, not the originator, and wrote the book in the second person, since it is essentially a lecture to Humanity by a Spirit describing itself as a “Super Soul of great magnitude”. It should not be seen as religious although it covers religious subjects. And it should not be seen as the enemy of established religion. They are what they are and as creations of Mankind, are understandably flawed however well intentioned. Essentially they get it about 60% right. If you are looking for the answers, that is the actual answers to Genesis and the Meaning of Life, this is the book you need to read. The next book, The Crown of Happenstance, uses elements from the Million Monkeys story and creates the sister planet Shonak, and the character Bon. The third book, soon to be published, is called It's About Time, and fully examines Bon's relationship with Earth and also the matter of TIme. What is it, exactly? It has no weight, color, size, sound, feel - but it is real enough, or is it? Read the book to find out.

    Author’s Note

There is also Itself, the over spirit of the Six Earths, and Atsa, a proto-Hopi and tribal chief. This is where you learn the details about Shonak and its people, about their monoculture, their boring, sexless lives, their phase-altering technology, their thirst for intellectual and technical conquest, and their love for Earth-watching.

The second book in the series, It’s About Time, discovers a new relationship between Earth and Shonak. Itself causes an otherwise inexplicable time shift that propels Earth 3210 years into its future while there is no time-change on Shonak. Because Earth is now an advanced, technological world, Shonak openly introduce themselves. They are willing to share much of their advanced technology with Earth but do not reveal their extensive surveillance operation on Earth with its blatant invasion of most everyone’s privacy. They prefer Earthers not know that they have essentially turned our planet into a virtual zoo for Shonak’s voyeuristic pleasure. They do, however, think they owe Earth something for it. They offer their assistance in areas of crime control, better agriculture, using ocean water for crops and drinking, cleaning the oceans, etc. This is where you learn about CRIMISLE for the first time. In all its dealings with Earth’s world government, Shonak continues to secretly expand its surveillance of everyone and everything, everywhere, using their massive fleet of surveillance bots, some of which look like rocks or trees, while others look like beetles, birds, dogs and cats, and people, among other things. The human-looking bots, the humbots, are perfect in every detail. There is eventually a scandal over the humbots, once Earth discovers them, and this causes Earth to sever all ties with Shonak for one hundred years.

Book Three of the Shonak series, Bot Diaries, contains a set of bot-collected short stories of Earther behavior prepared for young Shonakian students in the final quarter of their formal, forty-year education. These people live beyond 1600 years so forty years of schooling is not a significant sacrifice and there is so much to learn before they can join Shonak’s adult society on their own. These vignettes are designed to prepare the young, pre-adult Shonakians for their long life of Earther vid-watching. Every Shonakian enjoys watching the very different people of Earth as we go about our complex, difficult, conflicted lives. They join Vid-Watch clubs that specialize in the different aspects of life on Earth they find particularly interesting.

Book four, Earth Gets Even, tells how Earth catches up to Shonak in terms of their most impactful technologies: compact power generators of enormous strength, anti-gravity flight, and phase-change equipment. Earth also develops a way to detect every kind of Shonakian surveillance device, from fake rocks to fake humans. They are amazed and unhappy to find the true extent of the integration of the massive Shonakian surveillance effort around the globe. They are also distressed over the number of humbots in Earth society with millions of them in operation. Shonak also has many more billions of static collection devices and countless robotic animals and insects all designed to watch, record, and entertain the multitude of Shonak’s Vid-Watch clubs. While the people of Earth have known that the Shonakians collect video and audio of life on Earth, they’ve had no idea how large and intrusive an effort this was. When they do find out, they confront the Shonakians and it’s payback time!

The book you have in your hands (or e-reader) right now is book five of the series. This book does a deep dive into Criminal Island, or CRIMISLE, both in its first and then its second iteration. It takes the reader through the whole CRIMISLE story, with its tragedies, its triumphs, its unofficial closure and its official reopening under much different conditions. While The Island is a more humane place the second time around, there are plenty of dramas, heartaches, violence and high-tech operational things going on, for the inmates, the various police forces, and for Earth as a whole. This is not to mention the Shonakians who watch it all and who report things as they think appropriate. The four prisoner groups on CRIMISLE II, One through Four, separate violent convicts from the non-violent and the lifers from those with sentences from one year and a day to twenty years.

The following Glossary will help first-time readers understand this better and will serve as a refresher for those coming back to the Shonak Series.

    b.

    Glossary of Terms

Age Tattoo. On Shonak age seniority is the sold determiner for who is in charge. So, there can be no mistakes in determining age, Grand Team Age ensures that all live Shonakians emerging from their eggs are immediately tattooed with their date and time of birth. This tattoo is on their right upper arm and remains with them throughout their very long lives.

Anti-grav. Anti-Gravity. Specifically, a device that enables flight and propulsion without the need for jet engines, wings, propellors, rotor blades, etc. Simply stated it reverses the pull of gravity with a push.

Ben Post. Introduced in the book Earth Gets Even, at the age of 17, in +3052 UAY, this Phoenix, Arizona high school student begins his string of inventions that will within a few years make him the world’s first and only trillionaire and cause the downfall of the global power and transportation industries to be replaced by his technologies which are much safer and much greener. He wins the Nobel Peace Prize and the Science Prize twice and makes many friends and enemies along the way.

BenInc The holding company owned by Benjamin Post, the inventor of Earth’s own unique anti-grav, phase, and phasic power supply that changed the world almost overnight and made Ben the world’s first and only trillionaire. The subordinate divisions of BenInc are PhaseTech, GravTech, and PowerTech. Each has its own manufacturing units. The BenInc business model is to lease all of his devices so he can maintain control of their design and manufacture. He can turn any device on or off remotely and/or cause them to self-destruct. They are sealed with a unique resin that cannot be removed without the total destruction of the thing that is sealed inside. The recipe for this resin was given to Ben by Shonak who did not want Earthers at large to make any of these devices themselves. They monitor BenInc’s production closely, especially everything related to phase changing technology. They do not want violence prone Earthers showing up on Shonak unannounced.

Bots. Nominally short for robot, a bot is any surveillance device used by Shonak. These range in appearance from rocks and trees to insects, birds, animals of all sorts, and perfect replicas of human beings.

Copbot. A silver-blue humanoid robot with CRIMISLE police powers who wear the CRIMISLE Police badge. They are used exclusively on CRIMISLE II to provide control and discipline for the inmate population.

CRIMISLE. Criminal Island. Formerly Prince Patrick Island in the Canadian Northwest Territories. It’s the world’s 55th largest island at more than six thousand square miles in area. It is an uninhabited polar desert often surrounded by sea ice.

CRIMISLE I. The operation which used CRIMISLE to house the world’s worst prisoners who were arrested and sentenced in special Purge courts. This first iteration of Criminal Island was active use from +2273 UAY to +2531 UAY. It was officially still on the books after that but national prisons were adequate to house the reduced numbers of criminals so there was no need for it. Outstanding features: No guards, no separation of inmates by length of sentence, level of violence during the crime, or gender. Minors of course did not go to CRIMISLE. If there was time left on their sentence when they turned eighteen, they were eligible, and some magistrates did send them there.

CRIMISLE II. The operation which used CRIMISLE the second time around for incarcerating all the world’s prisoners with sentences of one year and a day to life. This operation was in conjunction with Purge II which began in +3036 UAY and continues to this day. Outstanding features: Inmates are separated by violent or nonviolent crime and non-life or life sentences and live in climate-controlled huts of up to fifty inmates each. There are copbots, medbots, and humbots among the inmate population to assist with law enforcement and emergency medical care as well as early warning intelligence and video production for Shonak’s infotainment network.

CROP. CRIMISLE II Operations Center, CRIMISLE Ops, or CROP for short.

Eldest. On Shonak, the oldest person in any group is automatically in charge. They are the boss in every situation. All Shonakians have the date and time of their birth tattooed on their right arm. Every 142 years, they are tattooed with the color of their age range, which goes on their forehead. They wear a colored wrist band that corresponds to their forehead age dot. This wrist band also contains the logo of the Grand Team they are assigned to. The oldest living Shonakian is known as Our Eldest. He wears an emerald tattoo and has an emerald wrist band.

DO. CROP Desk Officer. These CRIMISLE police officers keep watch over the inmates on CRIMISLE II. Desk Officers rotate through the various Group stations monitoring the activities in and around the various huts. They dispatch copbots and medbots when called by inmates or as needed for law enforcement or medical emergencies. The nonlifer Groups receive the best response and attention while the lifers are generally allowed to sort things out themselves with only minimal intervention. The Watch Commander dictates the observation and response priorities for each shift.

FOC. Full Operational Capability. It comes after the IOC period and is declared when the concept has proven valid and all systems are in the green.

Gold. Shonakians receive a gold dot on their one thousandth birthday. There are various levels of Golds for those in leadership positions and the oldest Gold is automatically the OE and becomes an Emerald.

Humbot. Perfect human replica robot. They are used clandestinely on Earth for law enforcement purposes and for approved use by Shonak Vid Watch clubs to collect infotainment content. Within the CRIMISLE population in all Groups they are used to provide early warning intelligence of trouble and also to provide insider views for the Shonakian Vid Watch community. Their use in the general population of Earth is under exclusive agreement between the World Government and Shonak.

IOC. Initial Operational Capability. Begins a time of beta-testing to work out the bugs and prove the operational concept. Once IOC matures beyond problems the next phase is FOC.

Law of Nativity. The LON holds that every physical thing resonates or vibrates at the frequency it was made or born into and this cannot be permanently changed. A thing from Shonak, for example, if left on Earth, will fade away and disappear on its way back to its native vibration on Shonak. Where it reappears on Shonak is only roughly the same spot on Earth and is not precisely known in advance.

Medbot. White with distinctive medical red cross on chest and back, these humanoid robots have extensive medical programming and carry equipment and drugs to provide emergency medical treatment and care for the inmate population on CRIMISLE. They are not used among the general population on Earth, so as not to take away any human’s employment but they have been used for rescue operations in situations too dangerous for human medics. An example would be work in collapsed buildings after earthquakes or helping supply medical aid to hostages where there is still danger from armed criminals.

OE. Our Eldest. The oldest living Shonakian is automatically the OE and leader of their world, Shonak. They are an Emerald, with a forehead tattoo and wrist band in Emerald.

Operation Purge. This program was originally established at the recommendation of the OE of Shonak to help rid Earth of its crippling criminal classes. Shonak provided the documentary evidence of all observed criminal activity which was available from Shonak’s pervasive surveillance being conducting on Earth for their entertainment.

Phase in or Phase out. Vehicles or robots equipped with phase changing equipment can alter their inherent resonance and disappear from view as they travel to another location out of phase with Earth. They can travel without phasing out but travelling in a different phase allows a vehicle to avoid weather and travel can even be achieved by going through the ground if that is a shorter distance. It is also possible for a vehicle to phase into a building or a particular room in a building without going through doors.

Phase Weapon. This weapon sends whatever it is aimed at into another vibration of existence. Following the Law of Nativity, the targeted material will return to its natural resonance eventually but to some only generally predictable location.

Polbot. Electric-blue with gray highlights humanoid robot with World Police powers used in every country but not on CRIMISLE. They have a distinctly different appearance than CRIMISLE copbots and of course wear the World Police badge. They are used in the most dangerous operations to avoid human police casualties. They can also be used to handle law enforcement responses when no human police are available.

Purge Court. These courts exist to avoid the possibility of corrupt tribunals at the local level. They were established as part of Operation Purge to rid the world of its criminals, corrupt politicians, and corrupt government officials. Purge court sentences are carried out on CRIMISLE when they meet the 366 days or more sentencing criteria.

Shonak. This is an alternate Earth which exists at a different vibration than we do. Their culture is more than three hundred thousand years old. They each live sixteen hundred years or more. They stand about thirty inches tall and weigh roughly seventeen pounds. They have no gender. They generate an egg during their four hundredth year and may generate another during their seven hundredth year if the population demand is there. They maintain their global population at 142 million and they divide the planet into 142 Regions, with a million people each. Age is the only discriminator among them with the oldest in any group being in charge. Their date and time of birth is tattooed on their right arms immediately after they come out of their shell. The Shonakians have a cashless society. They all belong to a Grand Team, like Public Utilities, Food, Manufacturing, Science and Technology, or Exploration, etc. They go to school during the first forty years of their lives and when they graduate, they are given a red dot, signifying that they are now an adult Shonakian. The colors of the dots in their forehead changes every 142 years and follow the colors of the rainbow—Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.

UAY. Universally Accepted Year. The World Government established a calendar for use all over the world and established the Universally Accepted Year to keep track of the days. All designations are written with either a minus or a plus, then the number, then the letters UAY.

USNA. United States of North America, consisting of the old Canada, USA, and Mexico. This unification took place to combine the resources and markets of each nation in order to compete with Europe and Asia.

UNE. United Nations of Europe. This unification was also in response to the growing economic strength of the USNA and Asia.

Vid-Watch Club. Shonak citizens have little free time but when they do, they are addicted to watching the people of Earth go about our very different, very conflicted, very exciting lives. They have formed clubs which concentrate their attention on certain subjects, or countries, or families, or activities which interest them.

WC. CROP Watch Commander, in charge of all the Desk Officers on any given shift. Oversight of the entire island. Sets the response priorities for each shift. Makes hut assignments based on the sentence and criminal history of each inmate.

World Assembly. The governing body of the World Government. Members are elected for one, ten-year term and are voted in on an at-large basis. Candidates come from any member country, but all countries are limited to only one Assemblyperson, regardless of the size of their population. This kept larger countries from dominating the Assembly.

World Government, WG. The combination of the World Assembly and the World President and his/her various cabinet ministries constitute the World Government.

World Police, WP. The WP have arrest powers in every member country and their jurisdiction trumps that of any local police. One of their main functions is to make arrests for the Purge Court system.

World President. With a five-year term, the World President is appointed by the World Assembly from a rotating roster of qualified men or women from the largest of the world’s member countries. Almost always a sitting or former President/Prime Minister/King of a member country.

Operation Purge and CRIMISLE I Organizational Summary, +2273 to +2531 UAY

What was originally called Prince Patrick Island is the westernmost of the Canadian Islands in the Arctic Ocean. It was part of the Northwest Territories, Canada, United States of North America until its sale to the World Government. Irregular in shape it is roughly 149 miles / 240 km long and varies from 19 miles to 50 miles / 30 to 80 km wide. It is 6,119 square miles / 15,848 square km in area which makes it the planet’s fifty-fifth largest island. There are no mountains, and the island rises to only about 920 feet / 280 meters. The island is classed as a polar desert, with a mean temperature during the warmest month of less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit / 10 degrees Celsius and annual precipitation of no more than 9.8 inches /250 millimeters. It has little to no vegetation or wildlife. The hottest month is August with an average daytime temp of 45 F / 7 C. The coldest month is January with avg temp -13 F / -25 C. Average rainfall is less than 2 inches / 5 centimeters a year. The windiest month is October with an average wind speed of 17 Mph / 24 Kph, gusting during storms to 60 Mph / 97 Kph or more. Before its use as CRIMISLE, it was simply a large, cold, uninhabited, mostly dry island of rugged, eroded, wind-swept permafrost. It is inaccessible most of the year by boat because of the drift ice which surrounds it, and the ocean water is inhospitable. At around thirty degrees Fahrenheit, the water around the island is two degrees above freezing for sea water. Without protective clothing, swimmer incapacitation will occur in under five minutes, death in under ten.

It was named for Prince Arthur William Patrick, Duke of Connaught, who was Governor General of Canada from 1911 to 1916. When the World Government bought the island in +2273 UAY, it was officially renamed World Criminal Island or CRIMISLE for short. It was a joint venture between Shonak and Earth, and Shonak bore most of the cost then and all the cost now.
