Future of Work - Reema Nakra

    Chapter-1

The New Future of Work in a Post-

    pandemic World

    Workplaces undergo frantic alterations

The unexpected outbreak of the pandemic has given a little time for organizations to prepare future strategies. Still, companies were able to overcome potential infrastructure problems to enhance the speed of decision making, while boosting productivity, using technology and data in fresh ways, and speeding up the scope and scale of innovation.

Businesses entered the digital workplace, swiftly adjusting to new tools and new ways of working. While the first few weeks had been tremendously demanding, with companies’ primary focus on mobilizing their people to Work at Home, most of them have now settled into the so called New Normal, celebrating successes and learning from failures.

With the toughest period behind us, it’s time to focus our attention on the future of work in the post-pandemic world. It is widely assumed that many of the changes triggered by the situation will be either irreversible or long lasting, with flexibility and digitization among the top future of work trends in contemplation.

Deloitte, one of the world’s top management consultancies, throwing light on the trends in HR, in its 2017 report, said that the future of work will possibly gain pace in the next half-decade. This is simply a task of where we are in the growth of technology. Fifty years after the invention of Moore’s law, processing and computing power continue to rise exponentially, driving growth in robotics machine learning. Cognitive tools to expand, and in some cases emerge as substitutes, knowledge work will continue to witness an upward trend and become extensively deployed and adopted. It will not be a startling revelation if the future of work, workforce, and work station issues come to dictate the concerns and agenda of HR and business leaders in the near future. This challenge needs major cross-functional consideration, effort, and cooperation.

How companies will respond to the COVID-19?

Companies are turning towards an emphasis on business outcomes, than on hours being spent on system. In the post-pandemic there is a paradigm shift required at the leadership level to lend stability and normalcy in terms of how people communicate with each other, where they work, and the manner they travel. There will be ever increased collaboration as people search for more rewarding jobs and consider their work as part of a larger movement towards social good.

According to ‘Henry Mintzberg’, Strategy is defined as 5 P’s: plan, ploy, pattern, position, and perspective. Let’s adapt his framework to propose our own 5 Ps: position, plan, perspective, projects, and preparedness.

The following questions can guide you as you work to bounce back from the crisis.

    1. Your Position in Organisation Post Pandemic?

To make smart strategic and quality decisions, you must understand your organization’s position. Where you stand in market? Your Competitors? Where you are heading to? Do you have that potential to emerge as a market leader fuelled by developments during the lockdown?

In Current scenario many companies are struggling and questioning their survival post pandemic including Travel/Hospitality /Events industries. You have to start mapping your probable position in organisation and market post pandemic.

    2. Your Plan of Action?

What is your plan of action to achieve your goals? What you must do to get through this situation and back to work when it ends? You have to think deeply, broadly and should have long view.

    3. Change of Organisation Culture and evolution of your perspective?

As a result of pandemic the culture of companies is surely going to change. Will this change in culture bring people together or not? It’s crucial to consider how your perspective might evolve. Do your organisation is prepared to deal with the crisis and how?

    4. Launching new Projects and coordination?

You have to prioritize and coordinate initiatives you will take for running new projects. What would be your strategy of launching, competitors mapping? Effective Coordination will play a key role in introducing new launch of any specific project or product in market.

    5. Execution of your Plan and projects? Are you prepared for it?

How much you are ready to implement your strategy in achieving your goal particularly if your company is shifted to remote work. Finally, you need to assess your organization’s preparedness. Who achieve and fall short of success will be determined by quality of decision making process.

If Companies are to bounce back in future they must act today and have to become more resilient in the process.

    Managing Social Welfare Remotely

This compels leaders to consider the welfare of employees in different ways. This suggests understanding how the pandemic and associated quarantine rules affect the mental, physical and financial wellbeing of working staff. Millions of employees passed through economic hardship during the time of the pandemic, as they succeeded in managing their work role with needs of home schooling or posing as caregivers for relatives. Burnout becomes a challenge for one year or more after the COVID ends, as working staff will find it tough to cope with new normal, specifically during the periods where workplaces changed from office atmosphere to home. Companies should set their sights on
