    Praise for Quantum Spacewalker:

    Jarl’s Journey

"C. S. Lewis meets the X-Files – is it true or fantasy revealing truth? Find out as Jarl negotiates time, space, and escapes (most of the time) pursuing demons who seek to destroy his mission to aid a dying world, but will he still find time for love? A good read with characters I hope to see developed more in book 2."

    Dr. Corinna Arndt

This book was an interesting read and a fascinating ride down a path the combines a Biblical Eschatological narrative with a rousing journey of finding treasures that are needed to complete the greatest appearance mankind will ever know: the coming of the Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Grace S. Grose’s ability to keep the reader captivated in short bursts of narrative and adventure allows the story to keep moving forward, all the while engaging us in a ‘what if?’ scenario of how Jarl’s personal journey will end. It will intrigue readers of the Bible to contend with the infinite possibilities that an infinite Creator can (or may) come up with. All in all, a delightfully gratifying story that has more adventures to come in the future….

Theodore Dino Butler, Native Youth Minister

A marvellous moving adventure. Set in a turbulent and fascinating time, sprinkled with some humor and a little bit of romance.

Nancy Huber, author of Kingdom of Eternity and Escape Through Time

Quantum Spacewalker: Jarl’s Journey is a creative and thought-provoking read, with endearing characters (my personal favorite being a pack rat from the Garden of Eden, named Erndel), an interesting premise, and many references to Scripture. I enjoyed the read, and look forward to the next book in this series!

Suzanne Werlein, pastor’s wife and mom to two exuberant boys.

Quantum Spacewalker: Jarl’s Journey was fascinating as the story unfolded to take a person on an epic universe experience. The story revealed the power (Omnipotence) of God to me. The Living Lord has life beyond our earthly thoughts for us in eternity, as this story revealed. It also showed me the unseen battle going on around us every moment of every day. After reading it three times, I highly recommend this book for anyone.

Awaken The Noble Warrior Within: A Companion Guide to Jarl’s Journey

    Prologue

Wind whipped my hair into my mouth. I had only just brushed it back from my eyes, where it had been battering me in the frenzied breeze.

    Why didn’t I bring a ponytail elastic?

Sighing, I held my long hair back with one hand and took in the surroundings from my vantage point high above the violent waters. This was one angry planet.

The wind churned the water before me into frothy whitecaps. They rammed against the shore before receding. I saw no sign of animals or vegetation along the rocky coastline.

Why are we here, Darion? I asked. "How am I supposed to heal this? More importantly, why am I supposed to heal this? I don’t see any kind of life."

When the turbulence overtook the surface, all life moved underground. Darion glanced down at me from his eight foot height. I felt dwarfed under his scrutiny. A bio-luminescent plant under the ground provides both light and food for the animals who live here. They haven’t been above ground for over a hundred years.

Where do I begin? The violent atmosphere left me feeling unsteady.

Think back to your training, Aneera. Which Spirit needs to be present first?

I mentally reviewed what our Universe Healing team had been taught by the Seven Spirits. The Spirit of Might. He will subdue the turbulence.

A good choice. Begin. Darion gestured to the waters. I rubbed my hands together, briefly closed my eyes, and asked for the Spirit of Might to work through me. I felt the fire rushing over my shoulder blades, then down through my arms until a dark blue flame erupted from my hands. I knelt on the ground and spread my hands flat onto the grey rocks before me.

Turbulence, come to me and be stilled. Weather patterns, be restored. I spoke to the winds and the waters. A blue circle ten feet wide spread around me, flames licking high up into the sky. They created a whirlwind that expanded hundreds of feet above me, drawing the winds and waters into it. I stood calmly, watching every wind and droplet of water on the planet churn through this blue flame blender. The violence in them was absorbed in the fire.

The winds returned to their place, as did the water. Pinkish clouds floated above on a gentle breeze. Water spread before me into the distance and over the horizon, small waves now lapping quietly on the shore. The sun appeared through breaks in the clouds, sending light dancing over the water. The blue flames died out. I walked over to Darion to survey the changes.

An excellent start. He gave me an approving smile.

There aren’t that many Universe Healers and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how large the universe is. I stared him in the eye. How are we possibly going to cover everything the rebellion has damaged in the allotted seven years?

Dear girl, this is your first practice planet. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

I turned at the sound of scurrying behind me. From rock crevices in the cliffs, colorful furry creatures about the size of guinea pigs made tentative forays, blinking large dark eyes in the light.

"Are these the planet’s inhabitants? They look like Tribbles from the original Star Trek series." I wanted to pick an armful up and cuddle them.

Yes. They are called Branets and are one of the more whimsical of the Holy One’s creatures. He leaned down and put his hand on the ground, palm up. One of the Branets with red fur, tipped in violet, ran over and jumped into his hand, emitting a whispery purr.

Darion placed the purring creature in my outstretched hands. It scampered up my arm to sit on my shoulder, nuzzling into my neck. I stroked its silky fur while watching the other Branets chatter to each other as they explored. Word was spreading, and more of them came out from between the rocks. A few looked at us expectantly.

They look like they want something. I looked around, wondering what my next healing step should be.

Of course. They want food. Darion picked up a blue Branet and petted it gently. "The Holy One provides food for his creatures in due season, as it says in the Psalms.¹ One of his names is Jehovah Jireh – the Lord Provides. These creatures haven’t had their preferred food since the fallen angels trashed their planet. The bio-luminescent plants helped them survive, but they don’t like them."

A picture formed in my mind of a purple-leafed bush with yellow berries. I knew the Spirit of Counsel had showed me this. She was always providing some kind of food. In my case, it was usually food for thought.

I asked the Spirit of Counsel to work through me and felt the familiar rush coursing through my arms. Green fire rose from my hands. I said, All right, Branets. Let’s get you some food. I placed my hands on the ground. Green fire engulfed the landscape. The Branets sounded alarm whistles and fled back underground. I watched as purple bushes with yellow berries began springing up and covering the earth. The Branet on my shoulder leapt off and made a beeline for the nearest bush, chattering madly.

Others heard it and poked their heads out of the crevices. When they saw the bushes, a stampede broke out. Their excited chattering was nearly deafening.

Darion and I looked at each other and grinned. I hadn’t felt this happy in a long time.

And this is only the beginning. He wore a satisfied expression.

Joy engulfed me. That’s when the first snowflake fell.

    ¹ Psalm 136:25

    Part 1

    Healing - Past

    Chapter 1

My name is Aneera. I was born during an early September snow in my Colorado hometown. My mother, in the grip of her life-long love affair with all things Gaelic, convinced my father to name me after the Welsh word for snow.

With this start in life, I suppose it was inevitable that I would fall in love with a dark-haired Welshman who sported a Texas cowboy flair and spoke with a Gaelic drawl. Gaelic rhythms inevitably drew me. It didn’t hurt that said Welshman was drop-dead gorgeous.

When I was four, I found a bird with a broken wing. My heart went out to the poor thing, hopping around — bound to the Earth, while its brothers and sisters flitted overhead. I brought it inside, determined for it to get better. My mom and I put it in a cardboard box and fed it while we waited for my dad to get home from work. During that long afternoon I never left the bird’s side, telling it that we would help it fly again.

Dad was brilliant. He used his engineering expertise to manufacture a tiny sling to keep the bird’s wing stationary until it healed. In a few weeks, the Happy Hopper (My name for the bird. It seemed clever at the time, but then I was only four) was able to flap its wings and fly. I thought I would be sad to see my little feathered friend take to the skies again, but I wasn’t. Instead, I felt the most intense rush of joy I had ever experienced. When I saw the bird in its proper state, flying high above, I knew that the only thing I really wanted to do in this life was to make broken things whole again.

Our family was a happy one for the most part. I loved our neighborhood in the outskirts of Denver. When Dad wasn’t at his engineering job, we went on family outings to the mountains. Our picnics, hikes, bike trips and skiing adventures created the memories that made up my bulging scrapbooks.

We had our small squabbles and my parents had to wade through the teenage angst of both myself and my younger brother, Jarl, but I always felt surrounded by love.

I was definitely the more serious of us two kids. Maybe it had something to do with being the firstborn and all that elder-child responsibility I had read about. The words I usually heard to describe me were focused, intelligent, and goal-oriented. My brother, however, got words like charming, goofy, and dramatic to describe him, even though he did have his own intelligent, determined side.

All that focused goal-orientation I was known for helped propel me through medical training and landed me in the Emergency Room of a Houston hospital. I tended to stab wounds, gunshots, heart attacks and other critical injuries. I still felt the same rush of joy when a life was saved and returned to its proper sphere. Yet, I began to feel a numbness creeping into my mind. Then it started working its way down to my heart, forming a protective crust against the continual onslaught of trauma.

There was much more broken that needed to be mended than my small efforts could ever touch. While my understanding of how badly the world was broken expanded, so did my despair of ever making a difference.

After all, what can one person do?

    Chapter 2

I’m so sorry, Mom. I slumped back into my Dallas airport chair. They said there was a malfunction in the airplane’s instrument panel. We’re going to have to wait for a replacement plane. If I’m lucky, I may still be able to get there in time for the ceremony.

Not to worry, sweetie. Mom’s soothing voice calmed some of my frustration. Carrie and Max will be happy to see you, even if it’s only for the reception. They know how happy you are about their wedding.

I smiled at the memories from my vacation three months ago. The highlight had been helping Carrie prepare party favors for the reception and talking about her big day. She’d insisted on doing the party favors herself, saying she wanted a personal touch for each guest. The wedding planner had handled all the other details.

Ok. I grunted slightly in irritation. "Save me a piece of the cake anyway, in case I’m really late."

Will do. I’ve got to run. All the girls are heading to the church soon. I love you, sweetie.

    I love you, too, Mom.

Aneera Henderson, please come to the information desk.

I looked up in surprise at the loudspeaker as I disembarked at the Denver airport. When I reached the information desk, a woman handed me a note that said, Please call your brother immediately.

I walked over to a quiet place at an unoccupied gate. After fishing my cell phone out of my purse, I called Jarl.

Aneera. Thank God! Jarl said when he answered the phone.

What’s up? I looked down the concourse and saw four SWAT Team members walking toward the end of the terminal. As they got closer, I saw tense concentration on their faces. I heard Jarl breathing raggedly. He hadn’t answered me. What’s up, Jarl? Worry crept into my voice. Some SWAT Team guys just walked by and this terminal seems to be emptying out.

He coughed and drew a deep breath. I don’t know how to tell you this. There is no way to tell you this except to say it. Our church is gone. It’s been completely incinerated. Mom and Dad…everyone was inside…. His voice broke and he lapsed into silence.

I stood, stunned. What do you mean, incinerated? I demanded. "What do you mean?" I realized I was shouting, and forced myself to be quiet.

Jarl’s voice was unsteady. The church is wiped off the face of the Earth. The cars closest to it melted. The ones farther back had their paint blistered. I was in the far back corner. I was knocked unconscious and have burns on my right side. Paramedics treated me. They said my car was drivable, so I came to the folks’ house because it was closer than my apartment. The police expect me to make a statement in a few days…. His voice trailed off.

My training kicked in. Analyze the situation, evaluate methods of treatment, decide on a course of action, and proceed. Right now, my brother needed me. Stay put. I’ll be home as soon as I can. We’ll go from there.

Jarl sighed deeply and said, Hurry.

    Chapter 3

Jarl’s face was pale, his eyes unfocused, as he sat at the kitchen table. He was still wearing his suit from the wedding, its sleeve and shoulder charred on the right side. White bandages showed underneath the tattered material.

I touched his hand. He started and pulled his eyes to me. I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you come in, he said before he stood up and hugged me.

I hugged him, then stepped back to look into his face. First things first. Let’s get these clothes off and let me take a look at those burns. It’s probably best to cut them off.

I got scissors out of the kitchen junk drawer and carefully cut through his suit coat and shirt before gently removing them and stuffing them into the trash.

That was the best shirt and jacket I owned. He looked at me with a wry twist to his lips.

At least his sense of humor is lurking in there somewhere.

You can always get another one. I looked at the bandages on his upper arm and neck. They had been expertly applied. On second thought, these bandages are in good shape. I’ll check them later. Do you want to grab another shirt?

Good idea. I keep a few clothes in my old room. He walked slowly upstairs to get changed.

When he returned, we both sat down at the table. Can you tell me what happened? I asked.

He shook his head. No one knows what happened. I think the entire city of Denver has gone into complete lockdown mode. The paramedic I talked with said they were implementing emergency protocols throughout the region.

They did that at the airport. All planes were grounded, I said. I was able to get my baggage and rental car without any trouble, but people who came for departing flights had to leave. I heard someone arranging buses to take people back to the city.

Jarl’s brow furrowed. "All I remember is being late. Everything looked normal when I got there. The limo was in front of the main church doors. The parking lot was absolutely packed. I literally had to drive to the farthest corner of the lot and barely managed to squeeze into a spot. Carrie and Max — the power couple with way too many friends and business associates…." He looked horrified when he realized what he had said.

Then what? I prodded gently, using my best bedside manner. It had worked before in traumatic interview situations like this. I touched his forearm to bring him back to the present.

His eyes were bleak. "I had turned to get my guitar out of the trunk, mentally calculating how fast I could sprint across the parking lot in order to be on time for my solo. That’s the last thing I remember. I woke up several feet away from the car, covered
