    Jimmy Jonas - Karen Valdez

    The Separation

    Part 1

On a chilly morning in March, Jimmy Jonas stood quietly by Gma Honey’s side, looking down at his shiny black shoes. He hoped he could hold back all the emotions welling up inside him.

More people came into the building, and they would look at him with sorrow in their eyes. As the light bellowed in the room though the stained-glass windows, there were colored shadows emitting on the white walls.

He wondered if it was just his imagination or if some of the shadows had big featherily wings. As he looked away, he noticed that the service was about to begin.

    Part 2

Pastor Nate Corrin stepped up to the redwood podium and faced the congregation. He was a tall, slender, young man with bright-blue eyes and short, wavy, blond hair who had a soft tone in his voice. Pastor Nate didn’t have a family of his own, so he liked playing baseball with the boys. Pastor Nate, Jimmy, Scirus, and Alex would hit a few baseballs on the front lawn of the church every Sunday after the service.

As the pastor began to tell the story of why they were all there that day, tears began to well up in Jimmy’s eyes. It felt like a flood was about to erupt from his gut, and there was no holding it back. Gma Honey, just at that moment, looked down at Jimmy and said, Don’t worry, everyone will understand.

No no no! He wasn’t going to give in. He knew in his gut that something wasn’t right. He would make it his mission to find out the truth, even if it took the rest of his life.

    Part 3

Jimmy wondered how he would be able to start such a mission. In the most inner parts of his body, he knew that the mission had to be completed. Everything in his life had to come to a holt. He was glad it was the end of the school year, and he would be able to begin the mission with no interruptions from school.

Jimmy was a fair-haired, freckle-faced, ten-year-old boy. His mom had always called his freckles angels kisses, but he didn’t want any of his friends to know that. The great excitement in his life was pitching on the baseball team, the Wolverines. Fortunately, with his tall, slim, and lanky frame, he was able to take the bases like a deer jumping over a fence. This year, it seemed he had grown because his clothes fit too tight. His pants were too short, and his shoes were hard to get on and crunched his toes. He would have to get a new baseball uniform and maybe get his favorite number. But would there be time to play on the team now? He knew the mission would have to be his number one priority and he wasn’t sure how long it would take to complete.

    Part 4

Jimmy remembered the last time he had seen his mom and dad. He was saying goodbye at the airport, hugging and kissing them both, wishing he was going with them. As Gma Honey and Jimmy were waving goodbye, the plane took off, and Jimmy walked away sighing. He would miss his mother’s ZBox challenges which, last time they played, she had beat him at Minecraft. Of course, he would miss her gentle, soft blue eyes and kisses too.

Dad would come home from work, and while Mom was getting dinner ready, they would catch a few baseballs in the backyard. Dad had just bought him a new Wilson A2000 pitcher’s glove, and he had finally broken it in—just the right feel, soft and easy to close.

Jimmy, looking down at his feet, took a deep breath and hoped he wouldn’t get rusty while they were away on their two-week second honeymoon. What did that mean anyway? S econd honeymoon? thought Jimmy, but he figured it was just a way of saying they wanted to be alone.

    Part 5

Jimmy would be staying with Gma Honey at Petra Mansion while his parents were away on their second honeymoon in Japan. He would have had a great time with Gma Honey at Petra Mansion, which was on forty-three acres of rich, lush pastureland next to the rushing river and dark green forest. She had four palomino horses, black-speckled chickens for fresh eggs every morning, and alpacas that were almost ready to be shaved for their long locks of fur. Jimmy has a horse of his own named Jewels that he kept at the stables there at Petra Mansion. She was a beautiful palomino horse with a white mane and tail. He loved riding her over the pastures and through the forest on Gma Honey’s property. Now he wondered how long he would be staying with Gma at the mansion? Would he ever get to see his home again?

    Part 6

Gma and Jimmy pulled up in the U-shaped driveway at Petra Mansion in her blue Mercedes Benz after the memorial at the church. As Neil, her chauffeur and butler, opened the car door, they were greeted by Sassy. He was a black standard poodle who could find a hotdog anywhere, even
