No man can have a harlot

    for a lover

    nor stay in bed forever

    with a lie.

    He must rise up

    And face the morning sky

    and himself, in the mirror

    Of his lover’s eye.

    From James Baldwin’s A Lover’s Question

JAMES BALDWIN JIMMY’S BLUES AND OTHER POEMS

Time forces searching to cease, and the mirror speaks truth.

    DEDICATION

I dedicate this body of work to my sisters; Antoinette, Annie and Jennifer who came to my first reading and embraced my efforts. To the memory of Louise C. Smith and Maggie D. Carter, two beautiful women of color, both played the role of godmother to me and nurtured my sensitivity because I needed comforting. My parents Y.T. and Mamie Lee Hughley who had eleven children and learned to love each for who they are/were. To my brothers and sister, who during a most vulnerable time, taught me what family love and acceptance is all about.

    INTRODUCTION

Reflecting on the words in this book the theme of suppression and triumph came to mind. I also came to realize that there are others who grew up in a culture of suppression and who still struggle with their authenticity. I am in awe of the new generation who live in a much more tolerant and expressive time. Some, occasionally not understanding those who still struggle with labels and identifying. My hope is that one day we all will embrace inclusion and acceptance, understanding that people are born to be who they are. My prayer is that the poems, short stories and essays in this book will add to the discussion that will enrich our community. Please enjoy these expressions by a Heterohomo who grew to love himself. I wish happiness and strength to all as you explore life and hope that you find peace in your being.
