The Gift Therein - Tim M Marshall

    Prologue

In 1967 a report on Soviet spy development was generated by CIA sources. This made more than a few agencies nervous. The USA was behind them in this field. It started a desperate search for psychically endowed people. This was the impetus behind the development of psychotropic drugs, many of these were tested on military personnel. Most of the new drugs were quickly swept under the rug, others became household names.

In 1969 US Army intelligence and communications division (INSCOM) approached several well-known psychics. Their proposal was to recruit one to train potential psychic spies. They were very interested in remote viewing. Ingo Swann was recruited and became one of the lead trainers of the potential spies. The Monroe Institute was established in the early sixties; their specialty is in using sound frequencies to alter brain wave states. The US Army created a standing classified contract with the institute to train their potential psychic spies, Ingo Swann would oversee this training. The project was codenamed Stargate.

In 1974 the program was renamed Center Lane, INSCOM Center Lane program produced controversial results, many highly accurate other embarrassingly far off, much of this information is now declassified. A breach in security proved to be an embarrassment for the US Army, and Center Lane was disbanded in 1995, claiming the end of the program was due to a lack of funding. The truth is that it was covertly handed over to the NSA, who were far better at keeping things secret. The NSA program is as yet deemed Top Secret, and is funded under the term Black Operations, which in turn means that it receives no oversight. The information collected by the NSA team has never been disclosed. In 2001 a new impetus was placed on the program to find or produce more ways to expand upon human consciousness to produce better spies. Classified contracts were forged between Johns Hopkins and Stanford Research division. The sole priority of these contracts was to create the means to expand human cognitive functions. Without bothering to achieve FDA approval 100 enlisted volunteers were given the experimental drugs developed, both fatalities and many suicides followed this first test, the public was told nothing. The contractors pressed forward with their research and by 2004 they had several new drugs to test. Again 100 volunteers were selected 20 of which proved highly successful, but of the remaining 80 no word has ever come. The results of these tests determined that the best application would be on pregnant women. A five-week old fetus they determined would benefit the most from the treatment.

In 2005 Dr. Rhaman of Johns Hopkins published his paper on the findings of the experiment. In the paper he claimed that chemically enhanced DNA manipulation could produce a new class of thinker. His research was based on fetal response to this therapy. In the paper he also claimed that the treatment held anti-aging properties, which in turn made his work go viral.

In 2007 the NSA had to turn away volunteer Guinee pigs. They were going to continue the testing but they had to take extra precautions to hide their culpability. The test subjects would be women between the ages of 20 and 27 who were 5 weeks pregnant. The selection was done by a lottery out of 5000 volunteers they chose 100. 96 of these women carried to term, it is undetermined why the other 4 did not. Most likely it was not related to the therapy, but this is speculation. The treated women actually began showing nearly immediate higher cognitive functions. Their children to showed higher functioning as they aged. These tests were run in Columbia Maryland. The research continued and improvements were made over the next 5 years. From 2007 to 2012 100 women a year were selected to undergo the chemical therapy. According to accessible documentation none of these women have been harmed by this therapy.

In 2010 three of the enhanced women teamed up and developed a new education program, it was named experiential learning and it started with 4-year- old children, and would progress until graduation. It began as in home schooling for 96 unique students. Their progress was second to none. By age 15 they were coming up with new inventions. A new form of energy, a new use for garbage, in all the graduating class had patented 40 new ideas between them. All 96 students were granted full scholarships, 92 for Stanford University. The NSA, CIA, and Army Intelligence recruited from these students their selections are deemed top Secret.

The first years of the school raised such a demand for this form of schooling that new facilities were needed. Several were built and new teachers were trained. After another two years they had to expand again. Columbia was absorbing the surrounding communities and many others were petitioning. The Army Corps of engineers intervened producing two substantial facilities on opposite ends of the current Columbia Maryland. The buildings were mostly subterranean only two floors were above ground. The cost to go to these schools was for the elite only. In 2017 New Columbia was formed as more and more communities wanted in. A training facility for a new type of teacher was included in the plans, but the first teachers had been trained by the founders in their homes. In 2017 the GDP of New Columbia was higher than all of the other states combined. New Columbia produced their own power in surplus, enough to power the surrounding states. At the new facilities students were graduating, and receiving equivalent Master’s degrees and Doctorates. It quickly became the most sought out system in the world. Crime in New Columbia was close too nonexistent. To completely eradicate its possibility a fence was erected. New Columbia was fenced from sea to mountain side. Three fully manned access gates were placed on both the north side and on the south side of the fence. To bypass New Columbia an expansive bridge was built above the city at route 95. Two other routes went under the massive city. By 2018 New Columbia held 1400 patents. In 2019 they disbanded paper money. Money exchange was now to be controlled by a super computer and an algorithm designed to handle this load. Wealth was virtually universal and poverty nonexistent. The NSA facility was now located within New Columbia, but was still bound by the Federal system. The Psychic spy program considered itself the watchdog of New Columbia, as well as the guardian of the USA. They were in a very real sense above and beyond the law, and far more powerful than anyone outside of the agency could imagine. This is a story about one family and how something so horrifically bad could lead to something so beautiful.

    Making Ends Meet

In 2012 Cookie, the matriarch of this story, was going on five weeks pregnant with her first child. She was 19 and due for an examination by her obstetrician. He was a hard man to get an appointment with for he spread himself thin over several clinics. She managed to get an appointment, but had to drive into Columbia Maryland to get it done. For her this was across town. The place was an All Care clinic, and by chance this particular All Care was the target facility that day for the experimental program being performed by the NSA. The young contractor who was administering the injection didn’t have names of the selected woman just a few phrases that the women would provide as passwords. The NSA was keeping the women’s identity to itself so that outside interference was virtually impossible.

Cookie arrived twenty-five minutes early for the appointment she had set. She walked into the clinic and was stunned that there was no one else in the waiting room. This had never happened to her before, and she was a nurse by profession, so it seemed odd. A young man was behind the reception counter.

Are you here for a checkup? he asked her. As he had three others that morning. Why yes I am, Cookie replied. How far along are you? he asked. About 5 weeks, she answered.

It was his last volunteer, she had the right answers. He immediately brought her into an examination room and prepared the injection. Cookie didn’t even notice the syringe until he was injecting her with it.

Excuse me, she said. What was that for?

The young man turned pale white, this wasn’t her. He had injected the wrong woman. There was no turning back. He would have to play it off. That was the new inoculation for you and your child. I believe that it handles whooping cough. He quickly fabricated.

I just wasn’t expecting an injection. It is safe for my child? she asked.

Absolutely, he assured her. He left the exam room in close to a run. If he didn’t report no one would ever know. This was just her lucky day, he thought.

Her Obstetrician peaked into the room, Cookie, you’re a bit early. He went right to work checking her vitals and looking into her eyes. Other than a slightly elevated heart rate I’d say that you are doing great at this point. Keep up the diet and the walks, and I’ll see you in a month. That was it. She thanked him and began the long drive across town. She felt odd, but it didn’t really feel bad, just different. She was due into work having taken the morning off for her appointment. She awoke the following morning still feeling a little different, was it something to do with that injection. She had neglected to ask the doctor about it. Frank, her husband joined her for coffee. You are especially beautiful this morning, he said, giving her a gentle kiss. You seem to be glowing.

She smiled and went into the bathroom to check her reflection. She had more color in her face, not flush. It was a healthy glow. Not that she had been in any way unhealthy, but different than usual. She rejoined her husband in the dining room. The doctor said that I was doing good yesterday, she told him.

He smiled at her, I’d say by the look of you this morning that you are doing even better than alright. Look I have four jobs today and probably won’t be home until about six this evening.

They parted with a kiss, and Cookie went to work. She inquired about the whooping cough vaccine and was told that it was good to get at this stage in her pregnancy so she dropped it altogether.

Her first son Scott was born on September 12th that year.

In 2016 she had to take a course in the newly upgraded system that her hospital was transitioning into. It was highly technical which meant that she would probably have a hard time with it. She didn’t take to new technology all that easy. She had to be at the community college for the next three days for the course. The information she processed in her first day blew her mind. She didn’t just understand it; she couldn’t wait to see what was coming next. She flew through the classes without a moments doubt. Once completed she knew that she could use the new system. She thought that it would make patient care that much the better. When she went into work the following day she had to show her administrator what to do on the system. The administrator wasn’t the only one having trouble. She had help several other get up to speed and her skills didn’t just boost her reputation she found that her job had become even easier due to the new system. Within three months she was the new administrator for the day shift nurses.

Brandon was born on the 25th of April in 2018. He was easier to deliver than Scott had been. From the moment of his birth she noticed a gleam in his eye. Her third child came two years later in May of 2020 finally a little girl, she thought. She and Frank had named her Lisa. She too had the gleam in her eye.

In 2024 the little family was preparing for the holidays. Frank and Cookie loved this time of year, it seemed to draw everyone in close. They struggled financially so regularly that it seemed routine. Frank made far more than she, but his work had seasonal gaps that couldn’t be helped, and they just barely made ends meet, but when the holidays rolled in they were determined to celebrate them right. They were what would have been called middle class, but the distance between middle class and impoverish was fading steadily. They made the bills and provided their children with every necessity, but it was a constant struggle even on a good year for Frank’s work. Frank typically worked anywhere from 12 to 16 hours a day. Much of his work required driving around a radiance of 50 miles. He would say that a good day was six jobs, she missed him on those kinds of days, but they did help with their bills. Even with her raise as the administrator he grossed almost twice what she did.

The dichotomy between the rich and the poor was made very obvious for it was separated by a massive fence. Cookie and her family lived among other middle class families but the poor were close by as well. Being on the wrong side of town meant the ever present threat of violence. Gang activity had escalated over the past ten years and they grew more and more brazen as the hunger got deeper and deeper. It made for good recruiting ground. The gang bangers saw no better way to go. The choice was to sink in the pit of poverty or go out and make life your own. The fence had made it a way of life and the authorities were all but helpless. The police had to watch their every step, between bad press and the paparazzi their hands were tied when it came to dealing with gang violence.

In comparison Cookie Pope’s little family didn’t have it all that bad.

Brandon now six, could hardly contain his excitement it was December 4th 2024. It was his favorite time of year, because his family seemed to grow closer. Though they scraped by most of the year, they pulled out all of the stops for Christmas. He was in the first grade and was anticipating the adventure waiting for him after school. Today was the day that his father, brother and he were going to pick out the Christmas tree. It was fixing to be a real adventure this year because his father’s truck was in the shop for repairs. He had no idea how they were going to accomplish the task, all he knew was that he had been invited to be part of the task. He is an outgoing first grader with a natural charisma that makes him stand out. He is well liked by his peers and his teachers, and there always seemed to be a gleam in his eye. He seemed to like everyone and everything. His excitement escalated as the hours neared the closing bell. The final five minutes went by agonizingly slow, when at long last the bell rang. He half ran and half skipped home in his excitement. This was an opportunity he didn’t want to miss out on.

Once home he was greeted by his dog Boh, who’s continuously wagging tail nearly knocked him over. He flourished Brandon with doggy kisses. Brandon was used to it, he kind of looked forward to it. He had been allowed to walk to school on his own this year, making it feel as if he were coming into his own, so to speak. He had some time to kill so he got busy with his homework. He was nearly finished when Scott got home. Scott said hello and nearly ran down the basement stairs. Their father got there five minutes later. I’ll be ready in five minutes, his father told him. Scott appeared out front with a fancy looking cart. It had 12 inch wheels, the front ones were rigged like a wagon with a pull handle to pull and steer with. The bed of the craft was a frame with a burlap cloth cradle that Brandon imagined would hold the tree securely. Scott was always building things. He shared his father’s shop in the basement, and spent more time there than his father did.

You ready for a walk, Brandon? his father said obviously ready himself. The look on Brandon’s face said it all. His dad had to laugh good humoredly. They both nearly flew out the door. Brandon’s sister Lisa was at Maama’s place; his mom would be picking her up after work today.

What do you think? Scott asked, referring to his cart.

Above and beyond any expectation I had, his dad said proudly.

The air was brisk, but not unpleasantly so. Brandon was in his glory. Such an adventure was a rare thing, and he was going to get the most out of it. It took a whole hour to reach the field where the trees awaited. There were already many folks wandering down the aisles looking for that perfect tree. Brandon recognized his neighbor’s car pulling into the lot. He noticed Mike get out of the car and waved him over. Mike didn’t waste time he ran right over and exclaimed, wow, that is a neat cart, did you make it Scott? Scott nodded and smiled. He was getting a reputation for his handy work. Mom and dad are determined to look at every single tree before they make their choice. He said in mock exasperation.

That’s half the fun, Brandon’s father told him. How would the two of you feel about manning the cart while Scott and I pick a tree.

That was a good plan for them. They were both in the first grade and there was a lot to talk about. It didn’t take his father and Scott long at all to find the right tree. Mike’s parents were still busy looking. It looked to Brandon like the perfect tree. It laid perfectly nestled on the cart. Scott offered him the first pull and he accepted proudly. It was easy to pull and they made their way home. Scott took over half way home, and Brandon appreciated it, it had begun to tire him. They had to get home before dark settled in. It wasn’t a safe place to be after dark. The evening was settling in as they got home. They actually heard gun fire in the distance as they got the tree inside. There were too few police officers for the ever increasing gang activity. This was the only way Brandon knew the world to be, he actually dreamt that someday he would fix things once and for all. Something within him hungered for it.

Lisa was waiting for them to bring in the tree, but she only had eyes for Brandon. His mom was there as well, smiling at the sight of the tree. That was some walk you had, she said proudly. He pulled the cart over half way. Scott told her. Scott and he put the tree in place and held it up so that their father could emplace the stand beneath it. It stood proudly in the corner of the living room. Cookie got on her knees to place the specially made scarf around the tree base. She was meticulous about it. When she arose she announced, We’ll begin decorating it this Saturday. Brandon felt another thrill pour through him, that was the best thing ever. It actually transformed the house making it seem even more magical. It somehow made the coming of Christmas more real. For Brandon it was the official start of the season. Lisa too had a glow in her eyes, she had been allowed to take part for the first time last year, so this year she was a seasoned pro.

Cookie announced that dinner was almost ready. Lisa had already set the table. All five were soon seated saying grace. Brandon related their adventure of retrieving the tree. I have never gone that far walking before, he finished his story. Lisa look at him a little envious but her adoration shined through
