Downtown, Coquelles
It’s a nice evening, don’t you think?
he brightened, trying to make her feel comfortable about this. He pulled the lever towards him, making the wipers work harder at parting the rain drops on his windshield. A shot of anxiety shot through him as he thought about how the inclement weather would be testing his driving skills, which would be essential if everything was supposed to work as planned.
Duke, are you sure about this?
she questioned, listening to the rubbing of his worn wiper blades against his windshield as they worked tirelessly.
We can do this Babes; we’ll just have to stick to the plan,
he encouraged, working his muscled arms around the tedious steering wheel, nosing through the large white gates, which automatically opened up for their van. She stared at the twin-scorpions tattoo at the back of his neck.
And if the plan doesn’t work?
Then we all get broiled, screwed, for a better word.
He looked over at her dark eyes, which by now were plagued with even more uncertainty. She took a glance through the rear view mirror while putting on her pair of gloves.
_____________
Take the next left, then park to the right, beside the red tesla,
the lanky security officer directed, smiling politely at them. They all returned the favor, except for Claude and Jonas; they both sat towards the rear of the blue sprinter van, looking at their watch. They were ready.
She took another look at herself, through the rear view mirror after applying the black lip gloss on her cold cracked lips. She breathed on the mirror and then used her long fingers to clear the frost from off it, leaving her smeary fingerprints. She was then kissed on the lips by Duke; a film of frost escape from his mouth while he chuckled a bit, trying to revitalize his confidence.
She took another glance at the pendant that her dad had given her. It all came back to her, why she was among them; she needed to pay for his operation. He was all she had left; Duke held on to her hands, almost squeezing them.
I guess this is what growing up without a mother does to girls. She walked out on us, years ago. The only mother I knew was Sara; she’s four years older than me, 27. She’s been the closest female to me and played the mother figure quite well, I think. She was the one who took me in when I ran away from home. She protected my butt from those lascivious French boys but she hooked me up with Duke and now I’m so hooked to him; a perfect mother Sara was, yeah, right. That addict, She thought. She looked over at Duke, getting ready to exit the van. He’s kind of cute for a bad boy, she thought, admiring his silly grin and making much of his hawk nose. I can’t wait to get this over with, she said in her mind, tapping her tall fingers on the latch of the door.
"Ok people, grab your instruments; our performance comes up shortly.
You don’t need to tell us that,
Jonas bit out, looking at the digits counting away, on his Swiss army stopwatch.
We are on the right timing, Pal,
Claude laughed, counting his words, patting Jonas on the back.
Well, I’ve got a sick dad to save,
Miranda whispered. They all exited the van after Duke parked faced out. They moved towards the entrance of the galleria, all four of them wearing full black, hauling their cello cases.
They were then greeted with applause from the throng of patrons at the French Diamond Show as they walked inside.

He continued steering the helm of the ferry, fighting the billows. He could hear the cantankerous sea waves slapping against his glass bottom vessel, tossing it into a choppy ride. He couldn't help noticing the way the hue of the sea water changed from blue. It darkened, without uncertainty, as the rising persistent waves pitched towards his vessel. He knew he had to hurry to get back to Dover because the sea conditions would deteriorate much more. This would have been his last trip to France for the day. He giggled slightly after taking another glance at the passengers, about a quarter mile away, who had exited his ferry. The look of fear and shock on their faces when the rising tides relentlessly tossed the vessel in which they were in, really kept him amused. He brushed his yellowish hair backward.

What the shit!
he blazed after looking to the left rear of his boat.
"Why on earth would someone be in the cold waters of the English Channel?
