The Evil Spell of The Witch - trista nowak

    For my friend Tiffany Marks

    Sabbath-Land

When you’re thirteen and your sister is just a year younger, it can be both good and bad. It’s hard for me to be my own person because Jennifer copies whatever I do, trying to be exactly like me. If I wear my long, black hair in pigtails, then she wears her brown hair in two French braids. When I wear a white tee with black short shorts, she does too. I have my favorite black gym shoes—she has hers. Because we are only a year apart, we’re also like best friends who hang out, like we did most days after school, doing homework and relaxing in the family room. On that particular day, I had just finished my algebra homework and settled down to turn on the TV. Jennifer still wasn’t done with hers, but my Mom already knew that.

You need to finish your Latin homework, Jennifer. Mom looked over my sister’s shoulder at her work, and slyly added, You should probably go to your room.

    Got it, Jennifer answered softly.

Do your best work, Mom replied, then focused her teddy bear brown eyes on me. Christina, ten more minutes of TV. After that, you can come help with dinner.

Okay, Mom. Ten more minutes! I called back, stretching my arms out lazily.

Five minutes later, a commercial came on the television screen—an advertisement for a place called Sabbath-Land.

Welcome to Sabbath-Land! the voice on the TV announced in a spooky voice. "A new amusement park for certain kids...of all ages! Cast the Evil Witch Spell and have some fun at Sabbath-Land. But remember! You cannot enter Sabbath-Land unless you cast the evil witch’s spell first! First, visit us online..."
