PROLOGUE
The scribe on the plaque to the entrance of Dagon—home to the Guardian Angels of happiness and love:
You are the Guardian Angels. Pure of spirit, thought and mind. Your souls belong to the eternal purpose of being. Never to feel. Never to love. And never to lust.
You are the guardians of lost souls. Immortal, as you roam the universe for eternity and guide those souls to find their path to happiness and love. That is your sole purpose.
And so they came to be; chosen for their genius minds, their unique ability to understand human emotions, pain, and desires. The insight they have into humanity and the universe. They contemplate life, and reach conclusions to problems constantly, without taking intermediate steps and without hesitation. Serving and giving, never to receive, never to experience the pain, or the pleasures of life, or love.
Until one day . . .
Many lifetimes ago ...
You broke the sacred code of the Guardian Angels of Love, Rahmiel,
Amitiel, the Angel Prince of Love, berated his son. How am I going to explain this to the council?
Rahmiel, the Angel of Mercy and Love, shrugged his broad shoulders. Thoughts of the hours of pleasure he’d experienced in the arms of the most beautiful angel, filled his mind. A smile curved his full lips as he reminisced.
Rahmiel!
Amitiel snapped, annoyed that his son was barely paying attention to him or acknowledging the seriousness of his actions. For in the eyes of the Ethereal Council of Dagon, in the constellation of Dorado, he had committed the ultimate crime.
He’d shared intimacy with a human woman. Even worse, Rahmiel had copulated with her, which was forbidden in the realm of the Guardian Angels.
Have you forgotten the laws, Rahmiel?
Rahmiel shifted in the gilded seat of the comfortable bench he was slouched on. He stretched his long, muscular legs in front of him and sneered, Those laws should’ve been changed centuries ago, Father.
He ignored his father’s furious glare. They’re outdated—fucking ancient, and should be outlawed,
he grumbled disdainfully.
Have you completely lost your mind, Son?
Amitiel thundered and Rahmiel could’ve sworn the walls rumbled in reaction.
He’s not the only one, Brother,
an annoyed voice sounded from the archway, leading into the receiving chamber they were in.
Amitiel swung around, anger in every line of his body. His brother, Dardariel, the ruling Angel of the Eleventh Hour walked in, followed by his son, Adonai.
Adonai joined Rahmiel on the bench and offered him a nonchalant shrug at his questioning look.
Don’t you walk away from me, little lady. Armaita, come back here!
Rahmiel winced, as his fiery cousin stalked into the room. With an unladylike snort in the direction of her two uncles, she plonked down between her cousins. She crossed her arms to stare morosely at her father, who’d followed her into the room.
The three older men stood over their children with disapproving stares.
Don’t tell me these two also—
A voice thundered above them, causing all of them to cringe.
Amitiel, Dardariel and Haniel, Archangel Gabriel is awaiting your presence in the chamber of confessions. Be sure to bring the offenders with you.
Amitiel covered his eyes and shook his head in despair. The fact that the Archangel of Dagon already knew about the atrocious behavior of these three, didn’t bode well for them. He glared at Rahmiel, the eldest of all the new age angels.
I blame you for this, Rahmiel. You’re the example all the younglings follow. Now you’ve corrupted your cousins and gods alone know how many others.
Now just a minute, Uncle Amitiel. We’re all grown-ups and centuries old; old enough to make our own decisions and mistakes. Rahmiel isn’t responsible for our actions.
Amitiel scowled at his niece. His brows knitted angrily as she returned his glare.
Disrespectful, that’s what you are. You have disgraced our fam—
"Amitiel, I am waiting!"
The thundering voice of the Archangel Gabriel himself spurred all six into action. Rahmiel wrapped his hand around his cousin’s mouth when she opened it.
Silence, Armaita, we’re in enough trouble as it is.
He caught Adonai’s look. Both of them realized that their actions over the past month would have serious repercussions. Not just for them, but for their fathers as well.
Archangel Gabriel sat on his gold throne. He was a giant compared to the six people standing in front of him. His council members, who sat in a semicircle on either side of him, were of an equally intimidating size.
He listened to their telepathic debate while he stared at the three young angels who’d broken the cardinal laws of the Guardian Angels of Dagon. Rahmiel’s lips turned up in a smile while he sported a faraway look in his eyes. Gabriel looked into his mind and what he saw made his blood boil. The visions of torrid, lustful acts, that even now had a visible effect on Rahmiel’s robust body, was the reason such contact with humans were forbidden. Such acts were the fruits of evil.
Gabriel’s eyes darkened. The difference between good and evil have always been a universal part of the living being’s existence. Most living creatures have a continued battle between their good and evil sides. No one could escape that inner struggle, especially the weakling humans. No matter how good or pure a being was, there was no evading the existence of evil inside their souls, the inner darkness that lay dormant.
Humans were easily swayed as they constantly lost the battle with their own morals, allowing their inner evil to submit to the demons and their salient ruler, Lucifer. Any sign of vulnerability opened a doorway for the evil; they became corrupt, dark, and weak. Their own ignorance was evil in itself, as they capitulated through the seven deadly sins—hubris, greed, lust, malicious envy, gluttony, anger, and sloth; upon which the demons fed their growing strength.
Quiet,
Gabriel ordered his council. I have made my decision,
he interrupted their debate.
But Gabriel, we have not yet come to a conclusion. There seems to be a division of—
Exactly. And I will not allow it. My word is final and none of you will oppose me. Is that understood?
He waited until everyone acknowledged his order before turning to the young angels who awaited his verdict.
You have disgraced the code of the Guardian Angels. Even now, you are floating in the memory of your carnality. You can no longer be trusted to do your best for those you have to care for; to guide them on the path to happiness and love without further tainting the sanctity of our quest. Therefore, you are now being stripped as Angels of Love and happiness. You will henceforth be known as Angels of Denial. You are now tasked to carry the burden of those who don’t believe in love. All their mistrust, hate and pain will become yours. And yes, all their lust will become yours too. For we know that those who do not love, use their bodies for pleasure, never to find their self or that one person who can deliver them from a life of self-hate and distrust. From this point forth, you will never see love and happiness again.
Archangel Gabriel, please! You can’t do this to us,
Armeita cried, her heart already cringing, as the memory of the attractive man who had given her so much pleasure and warmed her heart, began to fade from her mind. The protests from her cousins told her that the same was happening to them.
Gabriel stared at them. His voice floated in the air waves; soft, yet powerful.
You are the rebels we’ve always feared would rise and threaten to destroy our peace. I’ll give you this. You will not find love or feel emotions such as you just experienced from any human. Your true love will come from a lost soul. One who hates and mistrusts love and happily ever after. When your heart starts beating warm and pain bends you double, you will know you have found your destiny. You will then live with the knowledge that it’ll never be fulfilled, because to be with a human is forbidden.
Gabriel waved his council away as they disappeared into the air, one by one. His body began to shimmer as he too disappeared, his voice was hollow in the air.
Now, be gone from my palace. Your first assignments await you.
Rahmiel refused to accept this fate. He just couldn’t bear the thought of losing his human angel, Daniella, who had warmed his heart. Through sheer will and perseverance, he was able to break Archangel Gabriel's decree. Within years, he was able to break free the others as well.
And so The Rebel Angels were born. The Angels of Denial. Refusing to be limited by Archangel Gabriel's wrath, they instead offered absolution to those in denial and helped them to find love and happiness.
Rahmiel stood looking at his beautiful wife, Daniella. The baby in her arms kicked strongly as his golden hued eyes locked with his father’s. The strength of their celestial connection knocked Rahmiel off his feet, literally. He stared in shock at the tiny baby from where he sat on the floor. The golden eyes watched him unblinkingly.
Gods of Olympus help us all,
Amitiel cried from the door. "This is why an angel should never father a human child. Opposing the archangel by mating with a human; do you see what this has brought upon us, Rahmiel? Now, you have cursed us all. I name this abomination Azriel. For he is going to be the strongest leader any of the angels have ever had. Hear my words, Rahmiel. Your son will be the destructor of us all."
Rahmiel, Daniella and Amitiel stared at the baby. Intelligence and power surged through his eyes. A blast blazing of white fire shattered the figurine of the Archangel Gabriel sitting in the courtyard outside the bedchamber.
Azriel, the Angel of Destruction,
the whisper of the baby’s voice struck them silent, in awe.
CHAPTER ONE
Beware of the Rebel Angel
For once he laid claim to your soul
You are doomed
As he will set a fire to rage in your veins
Tumbling you into a maelstrom of unquenchable desire
Awaiting his ethereal possession
Bequeathing the only clemency for your lusts
To become his, forever more
Pfft, what hogwash!
Claire mumbled.
Shhh!
Claire glanced to her left and was struck by the hostile glare from a young woman sitting a couple of seats from her. She stared unblinking, reminding Claire of the glass-eyed stare of a store mannequin. Her gaze blazed with intent. Claire squirmed in her chair, waiting for a knife to be hurled in her direction.
Claire mouthed, Sorry,
and smiled inwardly when the only response was a cold shoulder. She noticed that a couple of the other students were shunning her in a similar fashion.
Well, color me pink, why doncha?
The auditorium was packed, as the audience hung onto every word the professor said. Claire was still amazed that there were so many people interested in Angels and Demons.
Folklore. She sneered silently. Playing faeries and goblins was a child’s games. It was unbelievable that grown-ups were fixated on the make believe world the man in the focus of the entire auditorium was
