    Chapter

    1

    Julia

I woke up late this morning so I had to rush and get ready for school. I didn’t want to miss my class trip. I  mean I wasn’t excited about the trip but I had to go in order to get extra credit.  I needed extra credit in my history class since  I was failing it.

This year our class trip was to the Holocaust museum in the downtown LA area.

Julia, hurry up! my mother yelled from downstairs. I roll my eyes. Like yelling will really make me move faster.  I ran downstairs, grabbed my books and headed to the school bus.

As I got off my bus, I reported to my homeroom.  My teacher Mr. Robins went to the head of the class and began taking a headcount of the kids in class. Alright everyone settle down. I know you’re all excited about today’s class trip. I want everyone to be on their best behavior. We will head out now and line up in a single file as we get on the bus.

As I  headed out the door Mr. Robins stopped me.

Julia, did you bring your notepad, to take notes for your book report? I want you to pass the class ok?.

Yes, Mr. Robins. I  have everything and thanks again for the assignment. I really don’t want to repeat the 5th grade

I got on the bus and everyone was surprisingly on their best behavior. I guess it's because Mr. Robins has captivating everyone's attention with his singing.  He was being silly as he sang an old nursery song the wheels on the bus go round and round

The trip only took an hour and we met up with the tour guide.  The museum focused on World War II holocaust victims.  The tour guide was very informative but not that exciting. I got bored and drifted off.

It is still hard to believe the terrible things the Nazis did to the Jewish people back then.  What I did find interesting is how one man could change the view of a nation and turn them around to hate people because of their religion or the color of the skin. I knew racism still existed but in comparison to what the Nazis did there was no comparison.

As I was walking with everyone, I noticed a picture on the wall.  It was a group photo of soldiers.  Hey Jenny, what do you think of this photo? Do you think those are American soldiers?  I ask my friend.

Not sure Julia.I can't really make out the symbols on their uniforms, Jenny answers.

Jenny took off but for some reason, I decided to stay.  As I  began to look at more of the pictures from the war I heard a deep voice. It was a man who spoke with a strange foreign accent.

The soldiers in the picture were from France.  They help the allies win the war".

I turned to look at the man. He didn't really look that old but he was tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

How are you enjoying the museum? What do you think of it? I am surprised to see such young kids visiting this place.Did you know the Jewish people were not the only people persecuted by the Nazis? the man says.

I turned to him. "No, I

did not know that," I answered.

I am not surprised,he said. Most people do not know the Romanis.

    Who are Romani? I asked.

The man laughed, and said, You may know them as Gypsies. They lived in Germany at the time.

Interesting. Tell me more please, I said curiously. Who was this strange man and why was he talking to me?

Sure, he said. But you may miss the rest of your classmates as they are heading  upstairs. I will walk with you in the meantime.

    Marcus

    ––––––––

As I was talking to the girl, I was reminded of  World War II.  How can I remember World War II, you ask.  I was there. I am much older than I look. I am over 100 years old and yet I look like I did when I was 25.

How can this be you ask?  I am what gypsies call a mullo, a vampire.  As I look at the girl I am reminded of my wife who was taken from me during the war.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was human back then.

I often try to remember the good times I had when I was human. But the good times were before the war. Before the Nazis took over Germany.

I  grew up in Schillerkiez . My family moved  around a lot back then. As did most Gypsies.  You heard correctly. I am a Gypsy, at least  that is what we are referred to by outsiders. I prefer to call myself a Romani.

Life was simpler then but even then the life of a Gypsy was never easy. My family was poor but what my family  lacked in money we made up for it in love. My parents cared for me and my sister  Elena deeply. We would pass the time at night playing music and dancing around the fire. The nights were warm with love. We were a tight-knit family.  My grandmother on my mother's side lived with us.  I was really close to her. Her name was Felica and I remember every night after we tuck me for bed she would say a prayer for me to keep me safe.

As a child I would hear rumors about my grandmother being a witch. It wasn’t until later after I got married that I realized the rumors were true. But when I was younger I thought they were just stories.

When I was 12 years old I remember there was a plague going around Europe at the time. My grandmother Felica would put oil on the forehead of my sister and I. She mumbled some words in a language I did not understand. I suppose she did it to keep us safe.

I do remember that our family was one of the few to survive while others died.

Marcus's mother, Teresa, watches her mother put a spell on her children.

"Mommy what did you do?'' asked Teresa.

I put a protective spell on them to keep them safe from the danger that is coming

Mommy, do you mean the plague? Teresa said.

No my child something else, I am not sure what my visions are telling me. But something bad is going to happen to these kids. My spell should protect them.

    ––––––––

As time passed, we moved to Germany. My sister however was older and got married and moved to France with her husband.

It was in Germany that I grew up to be a man. I met my wife when I was only 18.  I remember the day I met my wife Rona like it was yesterday.  It was early September and there was a town festival where all Gypsy families would gather to have fun, drink, and dance. I was there with a friend named Michael.  He had forced me to go out with him. As I recall I did not want to go to the festival. I wanted to go to another friend’s party instead.

Later on, at the festival, there was a local band playing and I liked the music so much that I began to dance when suddenly a young woman stepped on my foot. I turned to look at her.  She was rather petite in size. She had the most beautiful smile I had ever seen only to downplayed by her beautiful brown eyes.

Are you having fun this evening? I asked

    Yes, she said

I was hoping she would respond. I often found that if women respond to this
