29-year-old Star Wars collector Dennis Harwell receives the worst phone call of his life on a Tuesday night — his parents have been killed in an automobile accident. Dennis lives in his childhood home outside of Lafayette, Indiana, and now must travel to Colma, California, where his parents will be buried.

Reluctant to confront reality, Dennis embarks on a three-day bus trip to California. Refusing to travel without his cat, he smuggles her on board in a cardboard box. Ten hours into the journey, the cat bites Star, the brash young woman sitting behind Dennis. Star causes a scene; Dennis, Star and R2-D2 are kicked off the bus in the tiny town of Walnut, Iowa.

It’s evening and Dennis has little money, no credit card and less than three days to travel 1,700 miles; he needs Star’s help to attend the funeral. But when Dennis begins talking to Star about her life, she refuses to tell him the truth — except that she is on the lam. Then the pair are mugged and Dennis’ cellphone and wallet are stolen. Dennis is ineffective and Star is a fugitive, but the pair must work together if they are going to escape Walnut.
