Foreword
I was introduced to the author Justin Guyton by a mutual friend Martin Aguilar. That introduction led to me being able to interview him for my S.H.A.K.I.M.'s HOOD column (see www.gorillaconvict.com/connections). Justin has experienced many facets of the criminal justice system and found oddly there weren't many books written about it from a prisoner’s perspective. The stories that are contained in Felon: The New Slur Word will shock you and are supported with solid facts. You won't find mythological events, or embellishments in this book. Only the truth.
Felon: The New Slur Word is the first installment of many that will tell the stories of the injustices that occur in the system. I commend his willingness to share his story to shine the light on the systemic flaws that need to be corrected through prison reform. That's what made me want to be a part of this project. I feel that too many people aren't only victims to our flawed legal system, but there are millions who are not aware of the injustices that are taking place. Right here in America, people are being buried alive within concrete and steel coffins which are called prisons.
Sadly, today America's criminal justice system consists of millions who've been wrongfully convicted, many who are actually innocent, and countless with disproportionate sentences that do not fit their crimes. When it comes to the legal system all that matters, is the conviction. It’s not about who’s right and who’s wrong. Neither is it about what is right or what is wrong. The phrase Innocent until proven guilty,
is merely an illusion within the pillars of the criminal justice system. The main objective is getting a conviction by any means, even if those who took an oath to uphold the law has to do unethical things to obtain one.
This eye-opening book highlights many of the injustices that occur in the criminal justice system. I know first-hand what it is like to be maliciously prosecuted and convicted of crimes that I didn't commit. I am currently seeking exoneration of the life sentence that I'm serving for aggravated murder and felonious assault. The case against me wasn't based off the state having a murder weapon, or any forensic evidence linking me to the crime. Still my three co-defendants and I were convicted solely behind the testimony of an individual whose motives for testifying weren't to ensure justice was served.
Through this book you will learn that there are countless incarcerated prisoners that have been convicted under similar unjust circumstances. Fifteen long years went by before the person whose testimony convicted my co-defendants and I decided to recant his statement at his own will. In a signed affidavit he acknowledged that he had lied under oath at each trial to obtain reward money, and he never witnessed any of the alleged crimes. He went on to say that he had told the prosecutor during one of the trials that he had provided a false testimony about him actually witnessing the murder. The prosecutor responded by telling him if we didn't go to prison for these crimes then he would.
In an additional sworn statement made in the presence of a court reporter, he had stated that he was recanting his original story, because he had quit using drugs and was seeking to get his life right with God. Those who aren't truly aware of the tactics that are used in the legal system would think that the truth would finally set us free. When one of my co-defendants was granted an evidentiary hearing for a new trial, the state's former witness was prepared to tell the truth for the record. Before he was able to recant his story, the court threatened him with a hefty sentence for perjury for each of the trials that he’d testified in. When faced with the dilemma of being sent to prison for finally telling the truth, he’d decided to invoke his fifth amendment right. That caused the judge to deny the motion for a new trial.
After the court hearing, this same individual that the court intimidated into not recanting his statement on the record told a news reporter that, They are innocent, but I don't feel that I should have to go to jail for thirty years.
My personal experience with the system shows that even with concrete facts and the key witness admitting to perjury, the only thing the system cares about is maintaining our convictions instead of overturning the wrongful convictions. You can see how unjust the legal system can be by watching (YouTube.com/Lorain-Please-let-me go).
Justin has written a book that's needed in today's society, containing information that's important to know and to be shared amongst others. Dealing with actual facts and not just statistics. True life experiences from those who lived it. Those who've been convicted are now trying to break free from the demoralizing label felon.
During their time at Hard Knock University, some have studied to the point where they can actually be equated to professional lawyers, corporate attorneys, business marketers, strategists, law professors, teachers, entrepreneurs, but are now labeled FELONS... the new slur word. This book is a gem that all should have in their personal libraries. With over two million men, and women incarcerated in state and federal prisons, a book of this nature is long overdue.

Introduction
Racism still exist in this day and age. It may be more prevalent now than ever since it has evolved beyond the scope of ignorance. It used to be when one heard the word racism what came to mind was unjust treatment due to ones’ ethnicity. If you continue to feed a tumor it will continue to grow into something that will eventually cause harm to a magnitude of things it is connected to.
At first racism was employed to disrupt the lives of those subjected to the racist brutalities inflicted upon them. Now these racist brutalities have taken a new form that's not limited to one particular ethnic group. This new breed of racism doesn't appear to be a tactic of hate and discrimination until your ensnared in its clutch.
If you’re fortunate enough to remain a law-abiding citizen for the entire course of your life, then you will most likely never experience this new age racism. If you happen to be like many of the countless individuals who are systemically profiled, targeted, and who will fall victim to the design of the criminal justice system, you will learn that the word felon is a new age racial slur that's used to cause harm outside the psychological realm.
My goal is to shed a little light on many of the injustices that come with this label. I speak as an individual who has experienced many of these racist tactics and for those who will sadly endure this type of racism after me. Maybe one day society will wake up and find a way to rid the injustices the word felon causes to the lives of many who truly just want to move on from the mistakes of their past.
It has been said that the mistakes of one's past doesn't define one's future. Think about some of the past mistakes you've made in your life. Those mistakes aren't a true reflection of the
