INTRODUCTION

In much the same way as there is an Art to everything and anything—to War, to Thriving in a Techno-cratic Milieu, to People and Principles, and to All Else that Be—there is an Art to Travelling. One does not just ‘up and leave’ and arrive at a desired destination. There is an Art to Travelling, to relocation, to reaching the ‘green grasses on the other side’. As is the case with every respectable Art, merit comes from deliberate procedures and processes.

We travel for a host of reasons, but the root objective is to see the world and appreciate its charms. This appreciation might take the form of an ambition to boost your fortunes, a dream to popularise an idea or concept, and so forth. Covering all the bases by way of preparation and planning is proof of good judgement. This is why I have written this book, to arm you with information and facts that will simplify, ease and smooth over every wrinkle you might face.

You will learn a number of things from this book that will assist your relocation. I have included all the challenges you are likely to encounter as you gear up to make The Move. As you probably already know, relocating to a new country or region is not a walk in the park. I have done this, and so I will use my story to lay a reliable foundation for you.

This book will therefore serve as a guide, pointing out the acmes of relocation, as well as steering you away from pervasive bogs.

THE UNEXPECTED TURN

A multitude of steps

It was in the 21st Century that the cliché that the grass is greener on the other side became widely accepted—maybe not so much as accepted as it is suspected. With modern-day contraptions of transportation reaching unprecedented levels, movement from one place to another is easier than pie, even when you factor in parameters like financial capability. Nonetheless, the undercurrents of travel have advanced in leaps and bounds to the joy of any individual who is dissatisfied with their native milieu and looking to ‘shake off the yoke of inauspicious stars.’

Is there a place rumoured to flow with the proverbial milk and honey, with streets paved with gold, and even the most impoverished residents lodging in houses made with lacquered oak wood? That is a place to be. And that is the picture that tourism and travel agencies render—for good reason. Such hallowed places—where they exist—are labyrinths, with adversities shadowing every passer-by. To get from Struggling Refugee to Secure Resident requires a multitude of steps.

The Relocator

The Relocator (we shall use the term to describe you, an individual intending to set out) who expects roses and springs has disappointment hanging overhead. This is the fellow supposing that resources, assets and investments have been prepared and they require nothing but arrival for qualification. This Relocator seldom thrives in the new locale.

There is another type of Relocator who is prepared to take up arms against a sea of troubles. This is the fellow who is well-informed, has drawn charts and reached trustworthy conclusions—all before packing up for the trip.

The difference between these Relocators is preparation and planning. Dreams and aspirations are not a luxury to be set aside. However, it is clarity of purpose that holds out the longest. An intending moonwalker (not the dancer, the astronomer) understands that gravity is a force to contend with, after which Outer Space is available for exploration. This foresight is regrettably wanting in many intending Relocators.

Expectations, risks and returns

For Relocators moving into industrialised, first-world countries, sky-high expectations are a given. The dominant thought of motivation is often that the storm clouds are far behind and the stars have begun to twinkle. Not to burst that bubble, but this is almost always a far cry from the real world. To disregard this fact is to risk disillusionment, whereas to concede, fess up and see things as they really are is true fortitude.

The risk of disillusionment is likely the least of any Relocator’s worries. Vacillating between excitement and trepidation, the average Relocator seldom examines the big picture, juggles the stakes or counts costs. This is an exercise in futility and failure. The smart thing to do—before anything else—is to check angles, cover bases, evaluate risks, check various possibilities, and appraise everything.

Fortune favours the informed. Know what you are getting into before you get there.

A lesson on adaptation

The earth is a vast and variegated place. There are little to zero odds that your destination is exactly like your origin. A gap in the existence and use of resource, household economics, security, etc. is a prevalent driving force for relocation. You will likely not appreciate
