About this ebook

Brandy Chambers was looking forward to the birth of her first child.

She and Weston move from San Francisco to the small town of Alameda to start a family, she's writing her second book, and Weston has a fantastic job working on the Oakland/San Francisco Bay project. Having this baby would make her already wonderful life perfect.

But when the baby dies after a difficult birth, Brandy's perfect life blows up in her face.

Stricken with grief, she and Weston pull apart. This new distance leads them both to disaster. Not until a chance encounter with her high school friend, Edward Barnes, does Brandy pull herself together. Brandy and Weston agree to recommit to each other, striving to forgive infidelity and recreate their previous existence.

Everything is once again going according to plan - until Brandy discovers she's pregnant.

While she struggles to cope with this new obstacle, Edward Barnes returns to town and discovers she's having a baby, while Weston is torn between his love for his wife and his anger at her betrayal. Can Brandy manage to keep her marriage to Weston together? Will Edward be a part of Brandy's life if she and Weston separate?

German expressionism suggests that life is a grotesque pageant comprised of a series of human errors. Grotesque, in its English translation, relates to haphazard behavior. Author Patricia Yager Delagrange gives this early 20th century concept a 21st century twist in her new romance Moon Over Alcatraz about a loving couple, Brandy and Weston Chambers whose blissful life in Alameda, California is abruptly upset by their haphazard, or grotesque as the German expressionists would say, behavior setting them off course. Their marriage is dissolved along with what they believe is their happiness. In a moment of deep morose when Brandy has a miscarriage, their way of coping with the hurt manifests into an unexpected transgression that has them each in the arms of other lovers. When Brandy becomes pregnant with another man’s baby, a high school classmate named Edward Barnes who is a criminal attorney in San Francisco, this one haphazard transgression forces her to tell Weston about her one night stand. Delagrange devotes several chapters to Brandy’s seesawing emotions as Brandy analyzes what is the right course of action to take.At first, Brandy is furious at Edward for forcing her to learn the truth about her baby. But when Edward shows her more compassion and understanding than Weston does, she re-assesses her opinion about Edward and gives him a chance to be a more permanent part of her life. Their transient affair blossoms into a friendship then a romance making their grotesque or haphazard behavior produce something beautiful and trusting. This theme of infusing grotesque or haphazard circumstances into the plot continues throughout the story. It occurs when Brandy finds a reliable babysitter, a college student named Stephanie, who is struck by a car while bike riding near Brandy’s house. She comes to Stephanie’s aid and they develop a binding friendship.Another instance of haphazard events is when Edward is shot on the courthouse steps. While his life hinges on tenterhooks, Brandy uses the time to analyze her emotions. Was she still in love with Weston or was he past history? When she realizes Weston would have abandoned her if she had been in a coma, her choice becomes obvious. The last fifty pages of Moon Over Alcatraz are nail biting, especially when Edward suffers from amnesia after he wakes from his coma. Still, the negative turns into a positive and happiness prevails demonstrating that imperfections not only occur throughout life but can make life more satisfying.Delagrange is a hormonal writer. She writes from the point of view of her characters raging hormones making the love scenes all about being spurred by their hormonal needs, and their periods of indecision become long and drawn out as their hormones totter to find a balance. She incorporates many poignant lessons in life such as “the happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have,” which is the true value of Moon Over Alcatraz. Happiness is not the result of having a perfect life but being able to adjust to the circumstances people are handed.
