Carnal Fusion - Allie Ritch
Chapter One
I’ve been abducted by aliens.
Liz spoke the words to her empty prison cell, as if speaking the truth aloud would make it any less surreal.
The extraterrestrials in question were shaggy bipeds with exaggerated underbites and creepy little teeth. They had invaded Earth, darkening the skies above her hometown like a swarm of locusts with their ships. Unarmed, Liz had tried to run and hide when they’d landed, but two of the aliens had cornered her before she could barricade herself indoors. Although she wasn’t a soldier or a martial arts expert, she’d fought as hard as she could. She wasn’t sure she’d even bruised her abductors.
That had been days ago. Or was it weeks? She wasn’t sure. The lights in her prison cell were always on, and there were no windows. Once her captors had dumped her in here, she’d had no way of telling day from night. She wasn’t even certain she was still on her planet. After the fight with the aliens, she had been dazed, falling in and out of consciousness. She remembered them dragging her aboard their spaceship. Had it launched back into space? If so, was it orbiting Earth, or was it heading back to their home world? Trapped in this room, with its bars on one side and metal walls around her, she couldn’t exactly peek outside. She definitely heard a hum when she listened carefully.
Liz was aware of other humans imprisoned on the ship, though she couldn’t communicate with them. She couldn’t even see them. Once in a while, she’d hear a scream from somewhere down the corridor outside her cell. The only beings to pass by the bars were the alien guards who occasionally delivered food. They brought her some kind of weird vegetable patties, so at least she wouldn’t starve to death. A water bottle bolted to the wall also kept her hydrated.
At first, she had tried speaking to the guards when they appeared. Although they didn’t understand her language, she’d thought maybe she could make a connection. She had abruptly stopped when she noticed how they’d leered at her. Under other circumstances, she would have worried their looks were lascivious. In this case, she was pretty sure they were sizing her up like an insect whose legs they wanted to pull off for fun. She’d kept her mouth shut after that.
Liz heard the guards coming now. She peered through the bars and spotted them advancing down the corridor. They were like a simian genetic experiment gone horribly wrong. Instead of walking with a smooth gait, their steps were sort of bouncy. Their round beady eyes had tiny pupils that were contracted in the unrelenting light. Where humans had whites to their eyes, the aliens had whole sclera the color of guacamole. Their exaggerated underbites made their chins and jaws look enormous, as if even a seasoned prize fighter would have trouble knocking them out. But their most grotesque features were their hands. Their fingers were so long and spindly that they hardly seemed to have any flesh over the bones. A pseudo-thumb rounded up the number to an even six, each digit tipped with a brown claw. She shuddered at the memory of those hands on her.
When the guards reached her cell, she expected them to toss food through the bars, the same as they usually did. Liz audibly gulped when they stopped this time.
One was a head taller than the other. He—or she?—turned to his comrade and let out a series of chirps, barks, and grunts. The other one swiped a small, iridescent disk over a spot on the wall. The metal bars retracted into the floor and ceiling, leaving her cell open.
Uh-oh. This can’t be good.
Liz backed away as they came toward her.
The smaller guard lunged for her first, so she struck out with her foot. He shrieked when she connected with his leg. She made a similar sound when she only managed to bruise her toes. Hitting and shoving them was equally ineffective. With their longer reach, they easily subdued her. Each grabbed an arm and yanked her out between them.
They hauled her down the corridor the way they’d come. She looked around frantically, though she didn’t expect to find anyone who could help. To her left, she spotted a cell like hers, but it was open and unoccupied. Other cells followed, likewise empty. Where were the other prisoners? How long since she had last heard anyone scream?
Definitely not good,
she whined under her breath.
When they finally reached their destination, she was almost glad for their vise-like grips. She wasn’t sure her legs would hold her. The room they entered was filled with floor-to-ceiling shelves, weird metal instruments, and thick ventilation tubes that disappeared into the overhead ductwork. A chemical smell—something like bleach mixed with formaldehyde—burned her nose. The odor covered up the scent of what she was sure were human bodies spread out on exam tables.
Although the forms were all blanketed in pearlescent shrouds, she definitely spotted a person’s foot sticking out over there. Another alien wearing a wax apron tucked someone’s pale hand back under the cover at another table. Liz didn’t know what kind of sick experiments these aliens were running, but she was definitely in some kind of laboratory.
Were all her fellow prisoners dead? She scanned the room, hardly daring to hope. Then her gaze collided with a pair of gray eyes that were still very much alive. The man they belonged to was shirtless and strapped down to an exam table. He might have been a few years younger than she was, probably in his late twenties. From what she could see, he didn’t appear too badly hurt. There were red marks on his temples beneath his short, dark-blond hair, as well as a fading bruise on his ribs.
Before she could think of something to say, the alien guards hauled her over to the neighboring exam table. With visions of probing and dissection dancing in her head, she renewed her struggles.
No!
she screamed when they pinned her down. Don’t do this! Let me go!
Her resistance only seemed to excite them. They handled her more roughly as they got her strapped to the table. She yanked against the restraints with all her might, straining until she was sure she’d tear a muscle.
You can’t break free,
the gray-eyed man said. You’ll only hurt yourself.
They’re about to hurt me worse!
she pointed out.
She didn’t stop thrashing.
The man let loose with a string of chirps and barks. Panicked as she was, it took her a moment to realize he was speaking to her captors.
