The Sisterhood of Darkness - Jacira Félix

    Chapter 1

    The past

    Lueji

A hundred years ago there were many wars, in 1915. The First World War had already begun, it was a worldwide war centered in Europe, and it began July 28th, 1914 and lasted until November 11th, 1918. But that's not what I want to explain, what people from this century don't know is that half of the deceased of that war, weren't human, but vampires.

My mother, Layla, was a beautiful, kind human from Angola. She had soft brown eyes and a black hair, a tall dark skin with inexplicable beauty and a classical style. Layla didn't want the war to affect her, but she met a vampire and fell in love with him. His name was Jorge Kapalo.

Jorge belonged to the royal family of Fiantra, black with hazel eyes, short hair, serious, simple, and sweet. In one of his trips he met my mother and id didn't take long so she would discover his secret, but when she did, she never fled from him, which captivated him even more, she had decided to be with him no matter what, so my dad brought her to Fiantra, made her a vampire, and as the lineage followed, he'd be the next king and my mother, obviously, would be queen, because their binding love had generated me and my stupid brother Lucios.

Lucios was a young muscular black man, with a medium height, dark short curly hair, relatively bigger than our father's. His eyes were clear green and let's say the vampires of the kingdom are waiting for the day Lucios will announce his search for a bride, which won't be soon, perhaps never. I inherited my mother’s long hair, although mine were curlier, dark brown eyes, black skin, and ordinary body, as my mother would say a princess body with a few extra curves.

We were born vampires. Our mother raised us as normal humans, our country is big, which attracts many vampires to live here in Fiantra. Fiantra is an island hidden from others, only if you drift in the Atlantic Ocean long enough, you’ll find it, I believe that each supernatural creature has a kingdom even if other species doesn’t know. At 5 years old, my mother had found this child and wanted to raise her as her daughter, her name was Luiana and so that she could live with us, she would have to become a vampire, that was what my mother did at 20-years-old, cause if she did it when she was a child, Luiana would be eternally a child, and it wasn’t very hard spending time with her at first, cause she was a human. The years had passed, and we were 50 years old. We’ve worked in the royal army, we were trained not to have futile feelings, not to complain, and not to show what we feel, although we still were sweetheart. That’s when our mother died. My father became cold, prouder, and didn’t care about much at all, like me and my brother, unless he wanted us to do a mission. Us! We became what he most wanted, cold warriors. However, after that accident that killed some humans, we decided to leave everything behind and live our lives away from the kingdom, since our mother died in one of the royal missions.

Lucios had escaped the king way before we left, so he could free himself of his own responsibilities or simply not be under the pressure of taking care of the kingdom, which my father insisted on each of us being responsible for it, me and Luiana walked country by country to try and get our lives back. We decided to live in a country within Africa, since if one would assume Fiantra was in it, we would be staying in Angola.

As Lucios was already living there, we asked him to buy the house in which we stayed sometimes, facing the sea and not at all small. We liked the smell of the beach and the sounds of the waves as it was very relaxing, not that we were very agitated with a lot on our minds, but sometimes you only want to be human for a minute, and forget about the previous responsibilities, which, most of the times, was killing, after all that’s what we are, cold and strong beings, don’t be fooled, I like being a vampire.

The house on the beach had six rooms, a big kitchen, a living room, a dining room ornamented with brown and white colored furniture.

    — Finally! We’re here. — said Luiana, relieved.

    — Do you have the keys?

    — I do, Lueji are you sure we must study? We’re already graduated and, I don’t know, sometimes it’s just annoying to begin again.

    — It’s just a formality, you look like 18-years-old and I, 19, we must be in college.

    — If you say so. — Luiana commented, disgruntled.

    — Settle — I answer, as I finish opening the door and showing her the way.

    — I’ll put the stuff on your room — said Luiana putting the luggage on the corridor that gave access to the rest of the house.

    — Wait, I will keep you company.

As we walked towards the room, we saw some weird people appearing in our living room, although unexpected, we were not scared by their presence, they were the ones in danger, not us.

    — You must be Lueji and Luiana, right? — said one of them towards us, as the other one looked at the TV.

    — Who are you? — I asked.

    — We came here, the guy rented us the house... — said the man with a black, short, and very curly hair, before being interrupted.

    — Rooms! That’s what you meant — said the bald young man, for the first time.

    — Yes, that’s it! But there is no way to use only the rooms without using the other places. He said you own the property, and, in a few months, you’d be back — said the young man with black hair.

    — You haven’t answered my question — said Luiana.

    — My name is Hector, and this is my brother Tiago — said the black-haired young man.

    — Let me see if I understand it, he rented you the house even though he knew we were coming here soon? — I inquired.

    — Yes — he answered.

    — For how long did he rented you this house? —Luiana wondered.

    — We rented it for a year, what’s his name again? — he asked

    — Lucios. — the other one answered.

    — Yes, seems like that is his name.

    — I will kill that stupid idiot. — I replied, completely annoyed.

    — He’s our brother and since we couldn’t come here for years, maybe that’s why he rented the house. —Luiana said, slightly upset.

    — He’s the irresponsible one for not telling us. — commented the young one, seated in the sofa, without even looking at us, making us agree with him.

    — You’re right. What we’ll do then, Lueji?  —Luiana interrogated.

    — You can stay here; besides, you have already paid for the rent and the house is huge. — I acknowledged.

    — I’m sorry for not being understanding, but we’ve paid for it and we weren’t moving anyway. — said the other young man, grumpy.

    — Don’t mind my brother, he can’t deal with people properly, I’m sorry the bother. — said Hector with a smile on the face.

We left them in the living room and went to our rooms, when we finally were alone, Luiana:

    — I don’t believe we have to share our own home with other people.

    — It’s better than nothing, haven’t you felt a different small?

    — Actually, I did, on both. — Luiana replied.

    — You don’t believe...

    — It can’t be Lueji, don’t even think about it. We came to study and flee this life, remember? — Luiana said.

    — Yes, I remember, I must call to that idiot Lucios so he would know to whom he rented this house.

    ––––––––

In the strangers’ room, the conversation was a lot different:

    — You are a fool sometimes; you don’t know we need privacy? I knew someone would show up — said Tiago, the young man with black hair.

    — I know, but you say that as if they were from another world — said Hector.

    — It’s risky! —Tiago complained.

    — Calm down, they won’t find out about anything — Hector replied.

    — You’re too relaxed, have I told you you’re crazy, Hector?

    — Many times, Tiago.

    Chapter 2

    Operation Extermination

I was waiting for a bus, there were little traffic due to the rain that fell earlier, in this day I got out of work later, I was obligated to cover a shift for a coworker, I left it almost running, with no avail, since it was half past eight at night and I was still on the street, what don’t I do for medicine! The bus stop was full, so the drivers were going to play hard to choose their routes as they always did when there were many customers, the first bus to Rocha showed up going and filled up quickly I wouldn’t even dare to stay around a mess that would happen, since I lost my mobile last time. I let the first two buses go, and was able to take the third one, but time has no mercy and it was 08:50 p.m., I sat in the second to last seat, close to the window or, as I like to call, the thinking seat, cause there isn’t a way for you to sit there and not to reflect on life, I manage to get to Rocha without much traffic, I prepared my money and since we were getting there, and called upon the ticket collector to pay.

    — Mister, I’ll stay here. — I told him as I gave him the money.

    — Wey, you can stop here — he said to the driver.

I was getting ready to take my things and leave and after a while we went past the stop where I supposed to leave.

    — Hey, mister! I said I’ll stay here. — I spoke, incredulous.

    — Wey, I told
