Benjamin Cross, desperate to find his mother before his brother, Malcolm did, stepped through the mall entrance. He had already been to the house, where he had discovered she was out for the afternoon, and he knew instantly she would be here. He had always remembered quite fondly the days out at the mall while Dad had been too drunk or hungover to be tolerated. The truth was, that he never liked his father in any condition, and any excuse to leave was a good one.

It didn’t look quite the same now, but of course it wouldn’t. Where he remembered the health food store, there was a shoe store, instead - one of four in the entire mall, and he could see why it was destined to fail. It was far too small and cramped for browsing and trying on shoes.

It would be perfect for the health food store, though. It was right near the mall entrance, and it wouldn’t need to be particularly spacious
