    Preface

The artist in this book were a part of The British Music Invasion that hit the U.S in the mid 60's.

The Invasion began with The Beatles, in 1964, and continued through 1966. The discographies cover the years 1963 through 1971. By 1971 most of the original artist had changed directions musically or gotten out of the business all together.

There are acts that were a huge success in the U.K. and other countries, like Germany and Japan, but never released anything in the United States. I'll save them for another book.

Most of the 41 artists in this book were performing and releasing records before the Invasion began but I've limited those releases to no earlier than 1963. My reason is, The Beatles are credited for starting the Invasion in 1964 but their single I Want To Hold Your Hand b/w I Saw Her Standing There was actually released in December 1963. It wasn't until February 1964 before it caught on.

I've done extensive research on the discographies to make them as complete and accurate as possible. If I have missed anything, my apologies.

The discographies include tracks and are for the U.S. only. Formats are LP's (albums), 45's (singles), EP's (extended play 45's), Mini Albums (7" disc that play at 33 1/3 rpm that were distributed to jukebox vendors). Mini Albums are included in the LP category. I've also included Flexi Discs, a paper thin flexible record.

I've also put photos of the labels at the end of the discographies to give you an idea of what the label looked like at the time of the release to help in your search.

    Introduction

The British Invasion! What can I say! When it hit, it hit hard! Turning my adolescent life upside down!

1964, the year music changed forever and the beginning of a music revolution that never died.

I was a student at Knox Jr. High School in Salisbury, North Carolina when I was first introduced to this new sound.

I remember walking into my homeroom on that fateful morning, to find all the girls hovering over a school desk, giggling. The male population was gathered on the other side of the room.

After asking the guys what was going on, they quickly told me that the girls had gone crazy over a  record one of the girls had brought to school. It was by a band called The Beatles.

Curious, I eased over to the flock of girls and was able to look over their shoulders to see a picture sleeve 45 of The Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand b/w I Saw Her Standing There.

The picture on the sleeve was a black and white of the Fab Four all dressed in matching suits with no collar on the jackets. I'd never seen that! And God forbid one of them (Paul) was holding a lit cigarette! When I pointed that out to the girls, I was quickly banished to the other side of the classroom.

After school, as I walked into the living room, I spotted a copy of the same Beatles 45 laying on our coffin sized Magnavox console TV / radio / record player. If mom had bought a copy, I figured they can't be all that bad, so I played the record. I was immediately hooked on this new Merseybeat Sound from Britain.

That  Christmas I got a new portable record player and my cousin Jimmy gave me a copy of  The Dave Clark Five's Return LP. That was my first exposure to the Tottenham Sound and I became an avid DC5 fan from that moment on.

My younger brother, Tony, became a big Beatles fan and up to his passing in 2013, we enjoyed discussing and debating the pro's and con's of The Beatles and Dave Clark Five's music styles.

This quick reference book features the 41 British Acts that crossed over to the U.S. charts during the British Music Invasion Years.

These artist are generally agreed upon as part of the original British Music Invasion. Some made it big, some didn’t, but all-in-all they did their part to change rock 'n' roll music as we know it. I feel very fortunate to have been around during the Invasion which is a part of music history.

    THE ANIMALS

The Animals were originally called the Alan Price Trio and changed their name to The Animals when Eric Burden joined the band. They were formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 60's and moved to London in 1964.

The original members were Eric Burdon (vocals), Chas Chandler (bass/vocals), Alan Price (keyboards/vocals), John Steel (drums), Hilton Valentine (guitar/vocals). Price left in 1965, because of his fear of flying, and was replaced by Dave Rowberry.

The original band disbanded in 1966. Eric Burden continued on with Eric Burdon & The Animals.
