1 An introduction to Tel, Jonny and Jacko
The three main characters of the film, close friends Jonny Gallager, from Manchester, Tel Parke from London and Jacko Riley from Liverpool are each telling their part of the same story in the clubs they own in their home cities.
Jonny: (in Manchester) I did me first job when I was eight. Me and me mates robbed a sweet shop. The other lads were doing it for the candy. They were just kids. They had no idea of money. I was doing it for the reddies. I loved my clothes even then. Me ma couldn't afford to buy me much. So I had to start robbing to pay for the threads. I had the first pair of Nike trainers at school. It all started rolling from then on. I was a thief from Salford. I paid no attention at school. My Dad was on the dole and so were my uncles, so their was no hope for me and the lads. The docks were a rock (hard) place to grow up. If you were from their, you had to be handy with your fists and I had an iron right hook. The lads called it a sledgehammer. I was cock of me school and got into fighting in my early teens. I used to love it. We were like hyena's going into Manchester and taking on the straight heads. Don't get me wrong, I took a lot of beatings off the old school hard knocks, but it never bothered me.
We woke up to the coin (money) available in Europe in the mid eighties. We'd served our apprenticeship on the streets and all loved money by then. One of the older Salford hoods put us onto a Credit card and forged note scam in Amsterdam. Within a week we had put a grand together and were off to the dam. We bought a stack load of credit cards and forged ten pound notes. It was money for nothing. I bought a shed load of lacoste and tachine gear with the cards and raided a few jewellers on the way. The security was weak over their and we were fearless. You'd go out at night munching space cakes and getting wasted on Stella beer. You couldn't get it over here back then, but it was a big thing over the pond.
We didn't want to go back to the U.K, but we had to offload the cash. It was 86' and Strange ways had just started going off. I got caught up in the riots and got nabbed fighting against the Mancs and the dibble (police).
I ended up doing two years in Hindley borstal.
Jacko: (In Liverpool) My Dad's family were all heads in town. They had a field day on the docks in the fifties. The docks were an Aladdin's cave. They stored everything from electric shavers to ciggies (cigarettes) and whisky. My Dad and his brother's robbed the fucking lot. It wasn't like today were securities tight and everything's in containers. It was all stored in warehouses and the security guards were all boxed (bribed) off.
By the third year at secondary school I was the cock. I got sent to borstal at sixteen. I wasn't scared. I new I could take them all. Their was a daddy in their. He sized me up when I got in their and he never came anywhere near me. I wasn't happy about that la so I went after him on the footey field. I butted him and gave him a good pasting. That was that. I was the dog (top dog).
Jonny: I got out from Hindley on the 11 th July 88' and everything had changed. Everyone was buzzing about e's (ecstasy). I
