    You should have a party. At least for the first time. Lola’s smile was radiant.

    I just wonder whether it’s a bit… Beth’s resolve faltered. She was stifle by an array of friendly faces. Suffocated by their need to help her through this difficult time. As Beth’s words dangled, Lola arranged biscuits on a plate. They overlapped in a forbidding, scalloped pattern. 

    …a bit tasteless in the circumstances. Pru filled the yawning pause, not caring that she broke taboos or gave offence. She took up a biscuit just to disrupt the plate. One bite sent a shower of crumbs down her front. 

    Lola turned to glare at her. Pru responded with a show of indifference, slugging from the hip flask that contained her special tincture.

    No, Lola said pointedly, it’s just a way of welcoming Jonathan home. Of showing him how grateful you are for his sacrifice. It’s a tradition.

    I’m not sure. Tomorrow’s too soon. There’s too much to arrange this late.

    Beth had hoped that her continued reluctance to give her blessing to the venture would now make it unfeasible. Too late to prepare platters. Too late for invitations or decorations.
