Mass Transit
There was the quiet of an afternoon
away from the desert sun
napping in the hum of a bedroom fan
lazily flipping bottoms of sheer curtains.
There were the incessant neighbors arguing
the salient aspects of banality and boredom
in their dusty one bedroomed adobes
their very voices twittering away
like birds in the palo verde tree out back.
I listened to the simplicity of life silence
as I thought you slept, which you did,
but even while asleep you still
couldn’t help but being yourself
A city bus paused on a nearby corner
waiting to turn and did ever so quietly,
apologizing for being out on such a day.
Two women dining in a penthouse restaurant
Clare and Theo, lost in the incongruous sounds
of everything around them even themselves,
but the wine is good, the food expensive.
Clare had always been unfaithful even tonight
wearing her poorly combed wig, gaudy eyelashes.
She never let Theo in because Theo was plain
because Clare could spend money carelessly
sleep with whomever she liked, uncontested.
Theo helplessly rubbed her wine glass rim,
the flaring lights of the city below,
Clare's fetish for formal conversation,
the waiter
