Chapter 1
The lights on Avalon Boulevard flickered off the wet pavement. The few people out were hustlers hawking their wares, some skin, some pills. One of the girls was Jasmine. She was a dark haired and brown eyed lovely who was standing next to a 1986, black two door fiat. Leaning into the car she saw detective Tomas Colven of the Los Angeles vice squad. Hi honey, looking for a date?
Maybe I am, maybe not,
he replied. What you got in mind?
Well, sixty-five one way, eighty-five around the world, one hundred twenty-five all night with some coke or grass thrown in,
came her well-rehearsed reply.
He looked her up and down.
She was wearing a tight tube top and hot pants. She had a firm body, but if you looked hard you could see the age forced on her by the life she chose.
Well,
he replied. My girlfriend is out of town so how about an all-nighter?
Okay.
All right. Get in. We’ll go to my place.
Yeah, sure, but it’s cash ahead of the job, okay?
Yeah, whatever,
he said as he laid the money on the car seat.
So Tom, it’s Tom right?
Yeah. It’s Tom.
Well, what do you do besides pick up girls?
I’m going to school right now. Majoring in engineering and minoring in art.
And your girlfriend?
She’s majoring in pre-med and minoring in art, also.
The rest of the eight block trip was made in silence. When they finally stopped, it was not at a house, but in an empty parking lot. As they stopped, another car stopped behind them.
Wait a damn minute,
Jasmine said tensely. I’m not doing anything kinky.
Don’t worry,
Colven said. I hate to tell you this but you’re under arrest for possession of narcotics and soliciting.
Bullshit! You can’t make that stick.
I wouldn’t be so sure,
said another voice. The voice belonged to Tasha D’amour, Tomas’s partner. If there ever was a contrast in people it was these two. Tasha looked like she belonged on the modeling ramp, not out on the streets where she was. Tomas was street brash. Tasha was fine wine and Tomas was beer and blue jeans.
Tasha stood five foot four inches tall, had dark hair, blue eyes and light skin that was like fine china.
