    Prologue

    The sun burned with a heat that no life could stand, though it did nothing to lift the unnatural haze that blurred the landscape. Everywhere was sand and odd rocks, remnants of buildings, trees, burnt and twisted into black, grotesque shapes. Nothing moved on the scorched landscape. All the planet lay dead. This was Earth in the year 2089.

    A closer look would reveal moss and insects on this desert planet. There was, however, none to look. Oceans swam with scum where creatures died in the toxic atmosphere, befouling the seas. Only in the deeps did anything live, unaware of the cataclysmic changes on land.

    Below the surface of the Earth, however, was a bunker, sealed through the decades, where the last humans lived, safe from the radioactive haze. Artificial lights barely
