FOREWORD
by
Paul Westaway
Senior Paramedic at the start of the Air Ambulance project
As we embarked on a fantastic journey into the unknown Geoff told me, Paul, this will change your life
… he was absolutely right. Of course, I was not able to fully appreciate the significance of that statement, delivered in a very matter of fact way, at the time; but yes, his prophecy came to pass, and my life has never been the same since we began serving the people of Cornwall on the 1st of April 1987.
It is not only my life that was changed by the Air Ambulance, for countless thousands have benefited from the skill of the crews who fly on the helicopters. They have also benefitted from the sheer speed with which the crews can be delivered to incidents wherever they occur, and when necessary the patients can quickly be flown to an appropriate hospital.
In the period following the launch of the service our long-term future could be counted in just days and weeks. It is, therefore, true to say that none of us, at that time, could have really envisaged the country being served today by over 30 air ambulance helicopters. Some of these are operating 24 hours per day, flying emergency missions on night vision goggles and carrying Doctors along with the latest life-saving equipment.
This tale of how it began features many of the same factors involved at the start of any life-changing project and irreplaceable resource. It invariably includes one person’s vision followed by commitment, dedication and absolute single-mindedness. It was this single-mindedness that led to the launch of the Cornwall’s Air Ambulance. Geoff Newman and the small but effective group that came together in those early days needed all of these qualities to bring the project to a successful conclusion.
So many events of those early days are brought to life in this book. Geoff records those formative discussions and initial decisions intended to deliver a well-designed operational model. The sheer evangelical zeal that drove the launch of this innovative service still underpins it today and allows the continued delivery of a vital life-saving service.
This is the story that started with one man, who convinced a small but essential team of people that a helicopter Air Ambulance was essential for Cornwall. He was right, not just for Cornwall but the whole of the United Kingdom. The gestation
