About this ebook

The Universe Inside is an exploration of the reinterpretation of reality. It challenges basic assumptions about life that may not be serving our best interests. It considers ideas such as: God exists but did not create the universe; our spirit exists but is not in our body; and how could a loving God allow some terrible injustice to occur? Human origins are also re-examined with new interpretations of ancient writings. The intention of the book is not to define truth but to help us access the Voice of Truth that has always been inside us.

    Introduction

    Purpose

How would you feel about a new perspective on existence?  It may not be for everyone; especially if you are happy with your understanding of the universe, time, God, the world, eternity, and reality in general.  But if you could use a different context for the human condition, read on.

You may have considered the possibility that God exists and created the universe.  You may also have contemplated the idea that there is no God and the universe always was or is self evolving.  But have you considered the possibility that God exists but did not create the universe?  Or that your spirit exists but is not in your body?  Or that material objects cannot exist in the present moment?  Or have you wondered how a loving God could allow some terrible injustice to occur?

It’s not easy changing assumptions we don’t even know we’re making or considering alternate interpretations of things we already know.  Recall the Bible verse . . . it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God, (Matthew 19:24).  The original Aramaic uses the word gamla.  It can mean camel or rope depending on its usage.  Let’s try . . . it is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle . . ..  Isn’t that refreshing?  This comes from George M. Lamsa’s translation of the Bible from the Aramaic of the Peshitta which is thought by some to be the most accurate translation of the Aramaic spoken by people of the New Testament.

Everyone’s reality is what it is.  The concepts presented here represent one interpretation of reality.  Its purpose is not to declare truth but to help us think in different ways than we’ve been conditioned to over the years.  This may allow us to more easily recognize the truth within us for ourselves.  The idea that we are experiencing a dream and not reality has been suggested by saints and sages, religions and philosophies ever since time began.  That possibility is also being suggested by quantum physics.  Being a sci-fi fan, I must note that today we also have science fiction as another source of parables to help us envision this idea.

Many ways have been used over the centuries in an effort to break the grip our physical senses have on us.  Eastern tradition may have an advantage over the West in this respect.  Western culture is tied to logic, science, and left brain thinking in general.  Ironically, this helps us analyze and manipulate our environment but may blind us to its true nature.  Right brain attributes may be more helpful in this regard.  (The Postscript talks of this a bit further.)

It may be interesting to keep the following question in mind while reading:  Does it matter to you whether the universe is real or an illusion and why?

    Method and Intent

Unlike some of the authors I have referenced for further reading, I am not writing from first-hand experience of enlightenment.  If you find any of these concepts interesting, there are many resources to consult, some of which are listed.  I am simply gathering these concepts, collected over the years, to present in my own way for further consideration.  The presentation is meant to increase awareness of this information and be provocative by supporting the reinterpretation of life, religion, and reality.

Not being a professional writer but having a science and engineering background with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State (class of ’74), my intention is to keep it short and accessible. I have therefore tried to avoid lengthy expansions on these ideas each of which could take up a book in itself, as many have.  I also want to leave room for the reader’s own interpretation of these concepts.

A Course in Miracles provides the basic framework for the text with supporting concepts from other writers of spiritual or consciousness material such as Eckhart Tolle, Dr. David Hawkins, and Michael Brown. Although they may or may not agree with all my interpretations, their books are listed for further reading.  Chapter 6 is based on Zecharia Sitchin’s work concerning human origins along with the Bible.  The topics in Chapter 2 lean somewhat more on logic and science to give the left brain something to work with.  Chapter 1 summarizes a possible premise for the human condition based on A Course in Miracles.  The following chapters provide support for the premise as well as elaborate on possible ramifications of the premise.  Since an observation later on in the text may shed light on an earlier subject, it may be helpful to read through the text twice in order to gain more context for these probably unfamiliar ideas.  Clarification of terminology is provided at the back of the book.

With the use of analogies and by combining alternative concepts from a variety of sources, I hope to rattle some fundamental assumptions about life that may not be serving our best interests.  You may relate to some of these thoughts, or at least find them refreshing.  Others you may reject completely or just shake your head in bewilderment.  You are not asked to accept all or any, just consider them and see what happens.
